In this city of music, competent musicians are easy to find. From iconic artists to rock pioneers and classical singers, there is a lot of talent here. There are singers on the streets and others are background vocalists in cafes and bars.

1. Jimmie Vaughan

Jimmie Vaughan is an American blues and rock guitarist and singer based in Austin, Texas. He was born on 20th March 1951, in Dallas, Texas. He moved to Austin in the late 1960s and began playing with musicians such as Paul Ray and WC Clark before forming a band called The Fabulous Thunderbirds. 

The band’s lead singer plus harpist was Kim Wilson, the bassist was Keith Ferguson, and the drummers were Mike Buck and Fran Christina. The band’s first four albums, released between 1979 and 1983, are ranked among the most important ‘white blues’ recordings.  

Jimmie has close to 10 solo albums and he was awarded the Traditional Blues Male Artist of the Year in 2020. This singer is the older brother of the late blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan who was a Dallas Texas Singer. 

2. Janis Joplin 

Janis Lyn Joplin was an American singer and musician. She was one of the most successful and widely known rock stars of her era and was noted for her powerful mezzo-soprano vocals plus “electric” stage presence. 

Janis was born on 19th January 1943 in Port Arthur, Texas. During her younger years, she lived in Beaumont but frequented Austin to perform. Eventually, she moved to Austin to gain more exposure, while also attending college at the University of Texas at Austin. 

She made an impression among her peers for being carefree and frequently bursting into song. In 1962, Janis entered the legendary Austin music scene when she joined a band and made her first-ever recording of the song “What Good Can Drinkin’ Do”. 

She died of a drug overdose on 4th October 1970 at the age of 27. She remains a music icon and was considered the best female blues vocalist of the 1960s. 

3. Bob Schneider 

Bob Schneider is a musician and former lead singer of the rock band Ugly Americans. He was born on 12th October 1965 in Michigan but he was raised in El Paso and Munich, Germany. A regular in the Austin music scene, Bob made his way to the city after dropping out of the University of Texas at El Paso. He is currently based in Austin and is best known for his single ’40 Dogs (Like Romeo and Juliet)’.  

He recorded his first album, The Californian, in 2006 and has continued to gain national success but he still plays at venues in or around Austin. He plays at places like Little Woodrow’s, The Moody Theater, The Iron Cactus, and Antone’s Nightclub, and he holds a residency at The Saxon Pub on Monday nights.  

His presence in the scene has been honored with more than 50 Austin Music Awards, starting in 1992, when he was playing with bands like Joe Rock Head and Ugly Americans.  

4. Lucinda Williams

Lucinda Gayle Williams is an American singer, songwriter, and musician. This country icon with an outlaw soul was born on 26th January 1953 in Louisiana and started her music career in Austin in the 1970s. She is one of the most celebrated singers and songwriters of her generation, having released a string of albums that have earned her critical acclaim and commercial success. 

Williams has received three Grammy awards in separate categories, that is best country, best folk, and best rock. She also has two Americana Music Honors and Awards. She was inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame in 2021. 

5. Junior Brown 

Jamieson “Junior” Brown is an American country guitarist and singer. He was born on 12th June 1952 in Cottonwood, Arizona. He moved to Austin when he started his music career and he became a local success. 

His debut album was 12 Shades of Brown in 1990. He has released 14 studio albums and has charted twice on the Billboard country singles charts. Brown’s signature instrument is the “guit-steel” double neck guitar, a hybrid of electric guitar and lap steel guitar. 

6. Shawn Colvin

Shawn Colvin is an American singer-songwriter and musician. She was born on 10th January 1956 in South Dakota and is best known for her 1998 Grammy Award-winning song “Sunny Came Home”. Shawn moved to Austin after joining a band with college friends in the 1980s. She never left! The city is still her home. 

Shawn has won 3 Grammy awards, an Americana Music Honors & Awards plus others over the years. She was inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame in 2019.  

7. Gary Clark Jr. 

Gary Lee Clark Jr. is an Austin-based musician who is known widely for his live performances and amazing compositions. He was born on 15th February 1984 in Austin, Texas. He has won 4 Grammy Awards and is famous for his fusion of rock, blues, and soul music with a touch of hip-hop. 

Clark is an active live performer and has shared the stage with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, and B.B. King. He led the band and also Bruce Springsteen at the Kennedy Center during Jon Stewart’s Mark Twain Prize ceremony in April 2022.

8. Tish Hinojosa 

Leticia “Tish” Hinojosa is a folksinger who records in both Spanish and English. She was born on 15th February 1984 in Austin, Texas. Tish is known for singing both traditional Mexican folksongs and her original songs, both in Spanish and English. She plays the guitar with her right hand, though she is lefthanded.  

Influenced by traditional Mexican, folk, Tejano, conjunto, and country music, Tish considers her songs to be the music of the US and Mexico border. She has recorded numerous albums and has charted twice on the Billboard country charts. 

Using music to bring awareness to cultural issues, this singer hopes to highlight the plight of migrant workers and teach children Hispanic traditions and culture. 

9. Willie Nelson

Willie Hugh Nelson is an American country musician who was born on 29th April 1933 in Abbott, Texas. He is the most unforgettable of Austin musicians if the prominent statue outside downtown’s Austin City Limits is anything to go by. 

This American icon was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1993, and he received the Kennedy Center Honors in 1998. In 2018 The Texas Institute of Letters inducted him among its members for his songwriting. He was included by Rolling Stone on its 100 Greatest Singers and 100 Greatest Guitarists lists. 

Willie remains one of the most recognized artists in country and Americana music. He has written memorable songs and he remains active as a touring musician and recording artist to this day. 

10. Kathy Valentine 

Kathryn Valentine is an American musician and songwriter. She was born on 7th January 1959 in Austin and is the bassist for the pop-punk band the Go-Gos. She has maintained a career in music through songwriting, recording, performing, and touring as well as additional academic and creative ventures.  

Kathy credits the Austin, Texas music scene for her diverse musical roots. She was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame as a member of Blondie and again inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in October 2021 as a member of The Go-Gos.
