Haddish was born on December 3, 1979, in South Central Los Angeles, California. Her mother, Leola, was an African-American small business owner from a Christian family, and his father, Tsihaye Reda Haddish, a refugee from Eritrea, was of Ethiopian Jewish heritage. Haddish has two half-sisters and two half-brothers.

2. Haddish Grew Up in Foster Care

Haddish and her brothers were placed in foster care and separated when she was 13. She used comedy to cope with being with strangers while in foster care. Later in life, she became an advocate for foster care.

Haddish collaborated with Living Advantage, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the welfare of foster youth, for her Suitcase Drive for Foster Youth, where she gathered suitcases to store their belongings.

She works as a volunteer at the Laugh Factory Comedy Camp, and her She Ready Foundation also assists foster care initiatives.

Haddish starred in the comedy film Girls Trip in 2017. The film received widely positive reviews from critics receiving an approval rating of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. She was praised for her performance as the loud happy-go-lucky Dina, which brought her a considerable breakthrough.

The film earned Haddish several accolades, including a nomination for two Critic’s Choice Awards, and is included on The New Yorker’s list of the best film performance of the 21st century. Additionally, the film grossed over $140 million worldwide against its production budget to become the highest-grossing comedy film of 2017.

7. She Has Written Two Books

Haddish is also an author who has written two books. In 2017, she wrote The Last Black Unicorn, a memoir. In Judaism, a Bat Mitzvah is a ritual in which a young person transitions from childhood to adulthood. Since Haddish’s father was Jewish, she held the ceremony in December 2019 at 40.

The ceremony was conducted by Reform rabbi Susan Silverman. One attending was comedian Billy Crystal, who had given her close personal support and encouragement regarding her conversion to Judaism.

9. She Was Once Married

In 2008, Haddish married William Stewart. He helped her locate her estranged father, who walked her down the aisle at their wedding. Unfortunately, she filed for divorce in 2011 in Los Angeles and was finalized in 2013.

10. Haddish Was Accused of Sexual Abuse

On August 30, 2022, Haddish and Aries Spears were sued for claimed grooming and sexual abuse of two minors. According to the complaint, the children were recruited to film several comedy skits in which they were asked to perform sexually suggestive material.

Haddish’s attorney issued a statement stating the charges were without merit. Haddish stated on Instagram that she profoundly regretted agreeing to appear in a comedy skit that was “not funny at all.”

Several weeks later, Jane Doe filed to have the charge dismissed with prejudice, stating, “My family and I have known Tiffany Haddish for many years – and we now know that she would never harm me or my brother or help anyone else do anything that could harm us. We wish Tiffany the best and are glad that we can all put this behind us.”
