1. Bullock was born on July 26, 1964, in Washington, D.C
Bullock was born on July 26, 1964, in Arlington County, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C. She is the daughter of John Wilson Bullock, an Army employee from Birmingham, Alabama, and Helga Mathilde, a German opera singer and vocal instructor. Her father was stationed in Nuremberg when he met her mother; he oversaw the Army’s Military Postal Service in Europe.
Her folks got hitched there. Bullock’s maternal grandfather was a Nuremberg-based German rocket scientist. The family moved back to Arlington, where her father had previously worked for the Army Materiel Command before working as a Pentagon contractor.
2. Bullock was raised in Germany for 12 years
Bullock was raised in Nuremberg, Germany, and Vienna and Salzburg, Austria, for 12 years, and grew up speaking German. Sandra Bullock, who spent most of her upbringing in Germany, astonished fans and talk show presenters alike when she revealed she spoke German fluently. Bullock has demonstrated her command of the German language in several interviews.
In Nuremberg, she attended a Waldorf school. While her mother was on European opera tours as a youngster, Bullock frequently resided with her aunt Christl and cousin Susanne, the latter of whom eventually married politician Peter Ramsauer.
3. She had her stage debut at the age of five
Although most of us know her from Demolition Man or Love Potion No. 9, German audiences saw Sandra’s talents for the first time when she was only five years old. She travelled around Europe with her family before returning to the United States when she was 12 years old.

Bullock studied ballet and vocal arts as a youngster and regularly joined her mother in her opera shows, playing minor roles. She sang in the opera’s children’s chorus in Nuremberg. She was frequently seen in the children’s chorus of whichever play her mother was in. That singing ability eventually served her well in her part as an aspiring country singer in The Thing Called Love.
5. Bullock was a cheerleader while attending Washington-Lee school
Bullock attended Washington-Lee High School, where she was a part of the cheerleading squad and performed in school theatre productions. She loved the uniform so much that she still has it as some kind of dear memorabilia.
She likes to think that it will come in handy as a role-play outfit and even on one occasion she was joking that she loves the outfit so much that she wouldn’t mind being buried in it.
6. Bullock’s breakthrough came in 1994 in the smash-hit blockbuster “Speed “
Bullock’s breakout film came in 1994 when she co-starred with Keanu Reeves in the smash-hit film Speed as Annie Porter, a passenger who eventually drives a bus that has been sabotaged by a terrorist. She needed to read for Speed to ensure that she and Reeves had the correct chemistry. They had to do “all these pretty physical moments together, rolling around on the floor and whatnot,” she recalls.
Speed earned critical praise, with Rotten Tomatoes calling it a “terrific popcorn thriller [with] great performances from Keanu Reeves, Dennis Hopper, and Sandra Bullock,” grossing $350 million worldwide and helping Bullock establish herself as a Hollywood actress.
7. She has an Oscar

Bullock has acted in a variety of movies over the years, from comedies like “Miss Congeniality” to tearjerkers like “28 Days,” but it was 2010’s “The Blind Side” that earned the actress her only Academy Award. In 2014, she was nominated again but fell short of Cate Blanchett’s portrayal of “Blue Jasmine.”
For the films “The Blind Side” and “All About Steve,” Sandra Bullock is the only actress to have won both the Razzie for Worst Actress and the Oscar for Best Actress in the same year.

8. She owns the production company Fortis Films
Bullock is the owner of the production company Fortis Films, and through it, she has worked as a producer on several films starring her, including Hope Floats (1998), Miss Congeniality (2000), Two Weeks Notice (2002), and Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous (2005), as well as for the sitcom George Lopez (2002–2007).
Her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, served as president alongside her father, John Bullock, who was the company’s CEO. The firm has offices in West Hollywood, California, and Austin, Texas.
9. She ventured into the restaurant business
Bullock opened the Bess Bistro restaurant on West 6th Street in Austin, Texas, in November 2006. Later, she built Walton’s Fancy and Staple across the street in a structure she had completely refurbished. A bakery, upmarket restaurant, and flower store, Walton’s also provides other services including event organizing. On September 20, 2015, the Bess Bistro closed its doors after almost nine years in operation.
10. She was inducted into the Warren Easton Hall of Fame
Following the Haiti earthquake in 2010, she gave $1 million to the relief effort; in 2011, she gave the same amount in response to the earthquake and tsunami in Tohoku. In 2017, she gave $1 million to help with Hurricane Harvey recovery operations in Texas.
Bullock appeared in a 2010 PSA alongside other well-known celebrities requesting signatures on a petition for the cleanup of the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. For her charitable services, Bullock was inducted into the Warren Easton Hall of Fame in 2012. She also received the Favorite Humanitarian Award at the 39th People’s Choice Awards for her support of Hurricane Katrina-damaged Warren Easton High School in New Orleans.
