Maria Shriver was born on November 6, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. She was born into a politically prominent family as the daughter of diplomat Sargent Shriver and Eunice Kennedy a sister of Pres. John F. Kennedy. Shriver is famous for being an American journalist she began at CBS station KYW-TV IN 1986 and is the author of several books.

1 She was the founder of The Women’s Alzheimer’s movement

Maria founded The Women’s Alzheimer’s movement in 2015 in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association and they aimed to change the story of Women and Alzheimer’s once and for all. They ensured that they had empowered people and organizations by educating them about accessible lifestyle choices that could help delay or prevent brain diseases and promote healthy minds. They do this by funding women-based Alzheimer’s research, supporting those impacted by the disease, engaging and convening leading scientists and experts in all areas of mental health and brain and including nutrition, fitness, sleep, meditation and caregiving.

2 She is an Award- Winning Journalist

She began her journalism career at CBS station KYW-TV and she was lucky to anchor the CBS Morning News later in 1986, she joined NBC news. She anchored the weekend editions of the Today show, NBC Nightly News, was a correspondent for Dateline NBC and also covered politics.

For her reporting at NBC, Maria received a Peabody Award in 1998 and was co-anchor for NBC’s Emmy- Winning coverage of the 1988 Summer Olympics. Shriver received two Emmy Awards and an Academy of Television Arts and Sciences award for developing a “television show with a conscience when she was an executive producer of the Alzheimer’s project.

3 Shriver’s father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease

In 2003, Shriver’s father was diagnosed with Alzheimer and that is when Maria began being an advocate and fundraiser for Alzheimer’s patient care and biomedical research. She was the executive producer of the Alzheimer project which was a four-part documentary series that premiered on HBO in May 2009 and later it earned an Emmy Award. The documentary undertook close research in the country’s leading Alzheimer’s laboratories and also examined the effects of this disease on patients and families. The series was described by the Los Angeles Times as “disturbing, ambitious, carefully optimistic and emotionally fraught.”

4 She launched several reports

Shriver launched “The Shriver Reports: A Woman’s Nation Changes Everything” in 2009. In partnership with the Centre for American Progress, the Report revealed that American women, for the first time, make up half of the United States workforce and studied how that fact is impacting major institutions like family, government, faith organizations and business.

It was then released in 2013 in partnership with TIME and NBC News. In 2010 Shriver published another report; The Shriver Report: A Woman Nation Takes on Alzheimer’s. This was a study by Maria Shriver and the Alzheimer’s Association. Again in 2014, Shriver published another report; The Shriver Report: A Woman’s Nation Pushes Back from the Brink. The report is about women and their children in poverty and it’s by Maria, with editors Olivia Morgan, and Karen Skelton.

5 She was the first lady of California

When Arnold Schwarzenegger was in office, Maria became the first lady of California and she took on several initiatives such as raising awareness of the contributions of women to the state, encouraging Californians to engage in acts of service to their communities and working on practical solutions to end cycles of poverty. She also had to prevent conflict of interest by laying back on news reporting. As the first lady, she also established several organizations that could help women by training them, mentoring them and even giving them resources to establish their businesses. She also teamed up with Alice Waters in planting the first edible garden at a state capitol in what was once a flower bed in 2009

6 She founded the WE Connect Program

In 2005 she launched her WE connect Program which connects working families in need with money-saving programs and support services. It brings together businesses and community organizations, congregations and schools, government agencies and state leaders as partners in responding to the needs of the millions of individuals and families who are struggling to make ends meet. They were able to partner with La Opinion which is the nation’s largest Spanish newspaper thus it has helped WE connect to develop three editions of a 24-page, full-colour that has been able to circulate to over 20 million Californians.

In partnership with the Women’s Conference, she was able to create WE Connect – Million Meals Initiative which donated to the California Association of Food Banks. Through WE Connect she was able to hold a three-day Community Resource Fair in Fresno and Los Angeles in March 2010. Over.

7 She is an accomplished author

Maria has written around 22 books among them being; What’s Heaven which was published in February 1999, Ten Things I wish I’d Known Before I Went Out into The Real World, published in April 2000 by Grand Central Publishers, and What’s Wrong with Timmy? Which was published in October 2001, what’s happening to Grandpa? Which was published by Little, Brown and Company in April 2004, Just Who Will You Be? Which was published in April 2008 and I’ve Been Thinking: Reflections, Prayers, and Meditations for a Meaningful Life which was published in February 2018 among other books. 8 She is a Graduate

Shriver spent her middle school years living in 鶹APP, France, for a brief period when her family temporarily moved to Chicago, Illinois in the summer of 1968 following his mother’s work with Special Olympics. Shriver permanently returned from France to Bethesda, Maryland in 1970, where she attended Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart high school and graduated in 1973 later attended Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York for around two years, then she transferred to Georgetown University to study Bachelor of Arts degree in American studies and later graduated in June 1977.

9 She promoted service and Volunteerism

As Honorary Chair of CaliforniaVolunteers, Maria came up with the largest statewide volunteer matching network at CaliforniaVolunteers.org. She convinced his husband to establish the nation’s first state cabinet-level Department of Service and Volunteering.

 She also promoted a statewide disaster preparedness program called WE Prepare that encourages and educates Californians to be ready for any natural disaster or emergency. She has also established WE Build and WE Garden which is a children’s playground and community garden-building initiative. She has built 31 playgrounds with gardens in lower-income communities around the state in partnership with KaBOOM! Through CaliforniaVolunteers.

10 Shriver and her daughter were together as co-executive producers

Her daughter, Christina Schwarzenegger and Maria were Co-executive producers of Take Your Pills which is an hour-long American documentary from 2018, directed by Alison Klayman and produced by Motto Pictures and Netflix Studio.

The documentary explores the positives and negatives of taking psychostimulant medications. It’s a series of interviews with college students and working adults who are prescribed stimulants for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder along with parents who have kids with the disorder and they explain the challenges they face raising them. It also has episodes of interviews with professionals commenting on the use of stimulants.
