His mother was an actress and she often denounced the boy saying that she did not want to have him and would have gotten rid of him if she had a chance. His life took a wrong turn at the age of fourteen when his mother died. Gilbert lived a lonely childhood.

Gilbert was a controlling man which made it difficult to get along with several people including his romantic lovers. Greta Garbo was one of the women whom he had a romantic relationship with and she said he was a difficult man to stay with. Falling in love with Gilbert was probably a mistake in her life because he wanted to change her into a woman he would control. 5. Despite Being Prince Charming, Gilbert was a Terrible Fiancé and Husband
Gilbert attracted several women his way during his acting career including outstanding actresses such as Greta Garbo, and Leatrice Joy among others. Gilbert would often be caught by his fiancé Garbo with several other women, which of course he denied having romantic relationships. As if being a horrible young man wasn’t enough, Gilbert was also an unstable husband who mistreated his wife, of wives. His drinking habits and uncontrollable behavior often had negative consequences on his marriage. He once slapped his wife, Joy in public leading to a temporal separation. After Joy separated from John Gilbert, she gave birth to a baby girl whom she named Leatrice Gilbert. He punched MGM Mayer in the face after Mayer allegedly insulted Gilbert by telling him that Garbo was not a woman to marry. Mayer would later have revenge on Gilbert for his outrageous behavior.
9. John Gilbert Served in the U.S Army as a Pilot
Before venturing into acting as a full-time job, Gilbert served in the military as a pilot. He was an outstanding pilot but his behavior would not allow him to succeed in the field because of the strict rule. He was in the military as a pilot which gave him a chance to be important during the Second World War.

10. Gilbert Died at an Early Age and His Wife Did not Attend his Funeral
John Gilbert met his death in 1935, at 38 years. He died at an age when many movie stars hit the peak of their career, earning a lot of money and moving around the world. Gilbert suffered a heart attack due to his excessive consumption of alcohol and his body was falling apart. He later succumbed to cardiac arrest. However, something weird is that his wife did not attend his funeral.
