Daniel William Hale definitely holds a high place in the medical field. William was born on the 18th of January 1856 to Sarah and Daniel William Hale II. After the unfortunate death of Daniel`s father, he was forced to fend for himself and his siblings.
As he was growing up, he was fascinated by the work of local medical practitioners. Dr Henry W. Palmer apprenticed him into the field. William later on in 1880 joined Chicago Medical Collage to pursue his dream.
William has made great strides in the medical field. He was the first African American to open an interracial hospital. The Provident Hospital provided a training residency for doctors and training school for nurses in Chicago.
The establishment of this hospital put in on the maps as being the first to employ African American practitioners.
1.William was first apprenticed into shoe making after his father`s death
William’s father died shortly after they had moved to Annapolis, Maryland. William’s mother could not sustain William and his four sibling so she opted to send some of the children to go live with some relatives.
William was forced to move in with a relative in Baltimore, Maryland. He was apprenticed to shoe-making by one of his relatives. William however ran away to join his mother back in Illinois.
2.William first opened his first barber shop to sustain himself
After the death of his father, he was forced to move to Annapolis to live with relatives. In Annapolis he was apprenticed to a shoemaker but later on ran away to join his mother an siblings in Illinois.
After reuniting with his family he opened his first barber shop to try and sustain himself and his family. As they lived in Wisconsin, Williams became fascinated by the work of a local physician and decided to follow his path.
It is at that moment that he acquired interest in the medical field. Dr Henry W. Palmer apprenticed him into the field. William later on in 1880 joined Chicago Medical Collage to pursue his dream.
3.Williams` education was financed by Mary Jane Richardson, a prominent activist and leader in Chicago

Fortunate enough, William’s education was funded by Mary Jane Richardson Jones. Mary Jane was a prominent activist and leader of Chicago’s black community. He gained the much needed knowledge to open his own medical office in Chicago.
4.William founded the first interracial hospital, Provident Hospital and Training school
William made efforts to bridge the gap in the medical sector by founding the first interracial hospital. The Provident Hospital and Training School was open to all races. This private practice was open to both blacks and whites.
Unfortunately at that moment black doctors were not allowed to work in America’s private hospitals. All this were his efforts to bridge the gap in the medical service to all races. He strives to offer his services to all regardless of their race.
Dr William Practiced during an era where racism and discrimination was still present and African Americans were prohibited from being admitted to hospitals. His hospital was the first of a kind to hire African Americans as practitioners.

During the era that William was practicing, African Americans were discriminated from both accessing and practicing in the medical sector. William made efforts to counteract this discrimination by founding his own private practice, the Provident Hospital.

6.in 1893, William was the first African American to successfully perform an open-Heart surgery
In 1893, Williams became the first African American on record to have successfully performed Pericardium surgery. He performed this surgery in the Provident Hospital. The fact that he performed the surgery without an x-ray, antibiotics, surgical prep-work or tools of modern surgery put his on the map.
Dr. William`s skills put him at the fore-front of Chicago milestones. Williams repaired the torn pericardium of a knife wound patient, James Cornish. The patient had been stabbed directly through the left fifth costal cartilage.
His patient, James survived and was discharged 51 days later and had been admitted the previous night. He was later on considered a pioneering heart surgical during that time.
7.Later on in his career, William was appointed surgeon in chief of the Freedman Hospital in Washington
Later on Dr. William’s career, he was appointed as the chief surgeon of the Freedman Hospital in Washington. He never gave up his hope for inclusion of all races in the medical field. Dr William continued with his efforts to encourage the employment of multiracial staff.
He also encouraged the advancement of surgical procedures. William held this post of chief of surgeon until 1898.
During this time that he was chief of surgeon, he was appointed to the Illinois Department of Public Health, where he worked to raise medical and hospital standards.
8.In 1895, William co-founded the National Medical Associations, a professional organization for black medical practitioners
The National Medical Associations (NMA) is the oldest and largest organization that seeks to represent African American physicians and health professionals in the United States of America.
The organization was founded in an era where African American practitioners were being disenfranchised. The organization now gives voices to the African American race and the patients they serve in the United States of America.
The creation of this organization has made great strides in bridging the gap in race the USA. The organization has made efforts to eliminate disparities in health and attain medical care for all races.
9.William unfortunately died from a stroke
William Hale experienced a stroke and died in the year 1931. He had made major strides in the medical field. At the time of his death he was a charter member of the American College of Surgeons in the US.
He was among the first African American member of the charter. This was attributed to his success and efforts made in the medical field. William also published several articles on surgery in medical journals.
Daniel William`s history in the medical field still leaves on till date. He is listed among prominent surgeons in the US. Daniel Hale was buried at St Anselm Catholic Church in Chicago.
10.William left behind a legacy in the medical field
William Hale`s legacy still remains in the medical field. He is still known as a pioneering surgeon who performed a successful open heart surgery. This put him on the map in the United States of America.

The hospital was open to all races and therefore beneficial to even African Americans who had been discriminated for quite a while. William has also written articles in improving surgery in the field.
