The cathedral of Epiphany is both a parish church and cathedral. It is located in Sioux City, Lowa, United States. It had its beginning as St. Mary’s church in1891.

In 1902 pope Leo XIII established the diocese of Sioux City. Bishop Philip Garrigan dedicated St. Mary to serve as the cathedral and he began work to complete the upper church.

After the upper church construction was done, Bishop Garrigan dedicated the building without its signature spires on September 8, 1904, as the cathedral of Epiphany.

1. The Cathedral Is Located In Sioux City, Lowa, United States

The cathedral of Epiphany is a cathedral and a parish church. The Sioux city population makes it the fourth largest city in Lowa.

The cathedral is the seat of the dioceses of Sioux City. The diocese comprises 24 counties in northwestern Lowa and covers an area of 14,518 square miles.

2. The Cathedral Is A Fine Example of German Gothic Design

The cathedral was built, portraying the 19th-century German Gothic Design. William L. Steele, a local architect, designed the Baptismal font.

The cathedral has sixty-one stained glass windows from Franz Mayer and Co in Munich, Germany and was restored in the late 1980s.

The reredos in the apse, the side altar and the cross station are from the former St. Thomas church in Emmetsburg Lowa. The religious status was hand carved and hand-painted in Italy.

The cathedral was closed during the 1990s renovations and the items were donated to the cathedral as they are similar in style to the same it was removed from the cathedral in 1981.

3. The Cathedral of Epiphany Has Two Spires

A spire is a tall, slender, pointed structure on top of a roof or tower. The cathedral’s spire is a gothic spire and the signature structure of the cathedral. The two spires were added to the tower of the cathedral in 1952.

4. The Cathedral of Epiphany Was Initially St. Mary’s Church in 1891

Rev. Timothy Treacy was the parish’s first pastor that was supposed to work on the needs of a growing number of Irish and German immigrant Catholics in the central part of the city.

The United States was hit by economic depression in 1893, which delayed the construction of a new church. Âé¶¹APPhioners worshipped in the basement of the present church for ten years.

In 1902 Pope Leo XIII established the diocese of Sioux City and Bishop Philip Garrigan decided that St. Mary’s church would serve as the cathedral. He began work to complete the upper church.

Bishop Garrigan dedicated the building without its signature spires on September 8, 1904, as the cathedral of the Epiphany.

5. The Cathedral of Epiphany Has Undergone Several Renovations

In 1939 a minor renovation was carried out when Monsiger Thomas Conghlam was the pastor. In 1952 the two spires were added to the towers.

Bishop Joseph Mueller initiated a building project that completely changed the cathedral’s interior. The old wooden altar was replaced with a new marble altar with baldachin accompanied by other new furnishings, lighting and schemes.

In 1994 major renovations were also done; this included roofing, gutters, tuckpointing and other exterior issues. Also, many exterior elements and decorations were removed in 1961.

William and Eleanore Metz gave a gift of $1 million which led to a fundraising campaign for the $3 million interior remodelling projects.

Des Moines architect Larry Ericsson of the restoration firm Wetherell Ericcson was in charge of restoring the designs to reflect the building’s early 20th-century appearance. On November 10, 1998, the cathedral was rededicated.

The Roman Catholic church is the largest Christian church and the world’s oldest and largest continuously functioning international institution. It plays a prominent role in the history and development of western civilization.

7. The Cathedral Was Almost Closed in the 1980s

The number of parishioners started to significantly decline in the 1980s and the cathedral was on the verge of being closed down.

It was followed by many Catholic immigrants from Latin America and Southeast Asia, which saved the church from closing.

The parish continues to promote diversity as church masses are conducted in English, Spanish and Latin.

8. The Cathedral Has Pipe Organ

A pipe organ is a musical instrument that produces sound by directing pressed air through the organ pipes selected from a keyboard.

The cathedral Orgelbau Klech (2006) pipe organ is in a gallery-level case in the rear of the cathedral, which features a traditional style console with a mechanical action console detached from the main case.

The pipe organ is fitted with two manuals, 3 divisions, 29 registers, 3 stops and 37 ranks. Its manual consists of 58 notes and the pedal compass in 30 notes.

It also has slider chests, electric stop action and balanced mechanical key action. The drawknobs are arranged in horizontal rows on terraced stepped jumps.

The combined action of the pipe organ is computerized. Rounding out the aspects are a combination action thumb piston, slightly concave coupler reversible toe studs, straight pedal board and coupler reversible thumb pistons.

9. The Cathedral Has a Parochial School

The cathedral had a school and the parishioner started talking about replacing their old school in 1940, with the last graduation being held on June 1, 1949.

During fall, bishop Heelan catholic High School opened and the Sister of Charity of the Blessed Virgin many continued to teach at Heelan.

In 1957, Epiphany and Heelan needed a new school facility. The dioceses carried out a fund drive and purchased three slots at the corner of Tenth and Douglas street for $40,500.

The new grable school was built on the purchased three lots and was opened in September 1959. The schools from Epiphany st. Boniface and st. Joseph consolidated in 1987 to form a Holy family school; hence the parish grade school was closed.

The former school building is new, called Epiphany centre and houses the parish centre, offices and religious education classroom for the parish.

10. The Bishop of the Cathedral

The cathedrals bishop is Ralph Walker Nickless. He is an American prelate in the Roman Catholic Church and has been serving as bishop of the diocese of Sioux City in Lowa since 2005.
