This market dates back to the 1930s when it was popular with black musicians who migrated to Chicago. It was here that Chicago Blues was born.
In later years, the market became popular with entrepreneurs who sold assorted goods in pushcarts.
In 1994, the Market was moved by the City of Chicago to accommodate the expansion of the University of Illinois at Chicago.
The new location was a few blocks east of Canal Street and renamed the New Maxwell Street Market. Its last relocation was in 2008 to the current location on Desplaines Street.
This Street Market is best known for its bargains. It doubles as a flea market that is open every Sunday.

The 61st Street Farmers Market is located on the south side of Chicago.
