The star came out through a conversation with her son Jackson, who was barely twelve years old. Jackson had grown suspicious of his mother鈥檚 life as he felt that she was hiding something from him. Bello gathered courage and opened up to her son that she was in a romantic relationship with another woman.

鈥淚 took a deep breath, knowing that my answer, and his response, would have an impact on our lives for a very long time,鈥� she explained her encounter with her best friend Claire Munn.

鈥淚 was with someone romantically and I hadn’t told him,鈥� she explained her relationship. 鈥淚 had become involved with a woman who was my best friend, and, as it happens, a person who is like a godmother to my son,鈥� Bello added during the interview.

The Grown Ups superstar explained that she decided to give a try to a romantic relationship with her best friend. She realized that she was in love with Claire after going through her journals and seeing the photos they took together.

Maria Bello would later on use her son鈥檚 statement to label herself as 鈥榳hatever,鈥� or simply 鈥榃鈥� as part of the LGBTQ+ acronym. After revealing her relationship, her son Jackson said 鈥榳hatever, mom, love is love.鈥�

The actress chose not to label her sexuality because she feels that the labels are limiting and she does not want to be restricted. She is a fun-loving woman who prefers to have a free life without being caged. She states that she has no problem with those who prefer labels and would allow people to call her whatever they want to call her.
