He also made a name for himself in his role as Lawrence Kutner in the hit Television series House. Penn is also a prominent figure in American politics. Kal Penn hit headlines in 2021 when he revealed his sexuality and announced his engagement with to his partner of 11 years. In his memoir, 鈥�You Can鈥檛 Be Serious鈥�, Penn recalls how he met his partner, Josh, and fell in love with him while he was living in Washington DC. In the memoir, Penn confirms to be gay engaged, and ready for marriage.

While speaking to People magazine, he reflected on coming out to speak about his sexuality and planning a wedding with his partner who 鈥�hates attention鈥�. He added, 鈥�I鈥檝e always been very public with everybody I鈥檝e personally interacted with. Whether it鈥檚 somebody that I meet at a bar, if Josh and I are out or we鈥檙e talking to friends.鈥�

鈥淚鈥檓 really excited to share our relationship with readers. But Josh, my partner, my parents, and my brother, four people who I鈥檓 closest to in the family, are fairly quiet. They don鈥檛 love attention and shy away from the limelight.鈥� Penn said.

Coming out to the public to speak about his relationship and sexuality was such a relief. Having dated a gay for 11 years and finally being able to put it open to the public was a burden lifted off his shoulders. During the interview with People Magazine, he confessed to having come out relatively late in life than others do. He said, 鈥淭here鈥檚 no timeline on this stuff,鈥� he added 鈥淧eople figure their s鈥� out at different times in their lives, so I鈥檓 glad I did when I did.鈥� Penn was finally ready to live his truth and embrace who he was even in the public space.

Coming out to speak about his love life was met with positive support from his family and close friends. The Harold and Kumar star having made it public that he is engaged, the next step was to get married. As he spoke to people, he explained some of the challenges that he faced. Josh … [has said], 鈥極r we could just do a quick 20-minute thing with our families and that鈥檚 it.鈥� So we have to meet halfway in the middle.鈥�
