The wave is a sandstone rock formation. It is located in Arizona, United States, near its northern border with Utah. The formation is situated on the slopes of the Coyote Buttes in the Paria, Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness of the Colorado Plateau. The area is administered by the Bureau of Land Management.

The wave is well-known among hikers and photographers for its colorful, undulating formation and the difficult hike required to reach it.  The Bureau of Land Management limits the number of hikers due to the fragile nature of the formation. 1. It is one of the oldest and greatest geological formations in the world

It is believed to date that back in the Jurassic period the wave in Arizona was formed. It is the greatest geological formation in the world. It was formed when the dessert dunes compacted and solidified into striped sandstones. The peculiar and unique fluctuating stratum was created by slow wind and rain erosion.

It is said that the was virtually not known until the 1990s when it was widely advertised on German travel brochures and was also featured in the 1996 movie “Faszination Natur”. 

2. Accessibility of the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument

The formation of the wave is situated on the slopes of the Coyote Buttes in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness of the Colorado Plateau. Therefore it makes it possible to access the Vermilion Cliffs which are a Nation Monument. This cliff offers the best of northern Arizona’s wilderness.

It is also bordered by Kaibab National Forest and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, considering that some of the unusual geological formations in the United State are found in the northern part, of Arizona. They are anchored by an isolated maze of the rock formation known as Vermilion Cliff.

The Vermilion cliff was chosen as a site to reintroduce the California condor into the wild.  To access the cliff you are to have permits for day hiking, which are determined by the lottery system. Other areas within the Paria Canyon-vermilion cliff include the Paria Canyon and Buckskin Gulch.

Due to fact that there is no established nor a marked trail, it can be challenging to locate the wave.  The hikers must choose their route across the open desert, which requires traversing through the exposed sandstone, dune, and sandy wash bottoms. Every permitted hiker is provided with a formal guide sheet to enable them to navigate to the wave.

The guide is designed in such a way they use a compass, GPS, or visual navigation. There are six checkpoints, whereby each checkpoint includes a marked color photo of the terrain ahead.

The wave in Arizona is considered one of the most photographed landscapes in the United States. Every year, hikes tend to scramble to get the few permits granted to hike to see the formation. Only about 20 hikers in a day are allowed, considering that there are about tens of thousand of people that apply every year to be chosen as one of the lucky hikers.

It is said that the best time for the hikers to photograph the surreal beauty of Arizona’s waves is during the mid-day to mid-afternoon when there are few shadows.

Due to the availability of the internet today, the wave is one of the most famous features in the world. The wave attracts people from all over the world, whereby over a thousand people in a day apply for just twenty permits. The permit is conducted for four months before the month in which the permit is to be sought. This is done through an online lottery. The number of hikers is limited due to the overwhelming popularity of the site, hence leading the Bureau of Land Management to limit foot traffic in the Canyon, thus preserving the integrity and beauty of the wave.

The hikers are highly advised that the best time to visit the wave is during either spring or fall since the weather is neither too hot nor too cold. During summer, it is not an ideal time to visit since the temperatures can exceed 100 degrees, while during winter it might be possible though not high suggested since the temperature are usually cold at night but mild during the day.
