40 Fun and Best Things to Do in Nashville

A visit to Nashville is  what you call a sweet country-music themed vacation. Known as the Music City,  it has a remarkable country music scene, which is a  key highlight.  Yet that’s just one of the numerous, incredible treats that this beautiful capital of Tennessee has to offer.  Looking to explore Nashville beyond the music?  There’s so much to see.

From the rich history documented in its museums to the vibrant art spirit evident on street murals painting its neighborhoods, the city welcomes you to a refreshing blend of both the old and new. Iconic landmarks such as the impressive Nashville Parthenon accentuate the city’s neighborhoods, and that’s not all.

Strolling through the artistic Printer’s Alley to savoring the hypnotic neon lights and live music on the Honky Tonk Highway,  one can hardly run out of cool places to explore! As for the thriving eatery scene, southern delicacy is a must-try. There are numerous restaurants and places to stay, whether you’re visiting for a day, a week, or even a month.

See Where to Stay in Nashville: Best Area Guide.

Nashville has something in store for everyone’s budget, so don’t worry if you’re not willing to break the bank. We’ve compiled a list of 40 fun and best things to do in the city, but before we get into it, here are a few general traveling tips to consider;

Parking in downtown Nashville is expensive.  In fact, most places in the city have paid parking. A budget for this comes in handy. Look out for cheaper options like parking at the mall if you can easily walk to the venue. Considering public means of transport where it’s cheaper and more convenient will save you some dollars.  If you’re not used to driving around in busy cities, consider using taxis or the Metro Service.

Nashville is one of the most visited cities in the United States, which means it’s also one of the busiest. Book your visits in advance where possible to avoid the hustle.  If you’re only visiting for  a weekend with nothing specific in mind, a city sightseeing tour is a great idea. That way, you’ll pack up most of what the city has to offer in little time. If you’re staying longer, then take your time and check out as many venues as you can.

That said, here are the 40 best things to do in Music City!

Take a stroll at any time of the door or night, and you’re sure to hear a band sing their lungs off at any of the honky tonk bars that line up the street. These are the spaces where some of the country music stars like Gretchen Wilson first sang. To imagine that someone first heard them while drinking a beer in a bar way before they became famous is amusing. Most of the bars, if not all, don’t have a cover charge, which means you can hop in and out as you, please. Each one of them is an invitation to a live music experience freshly curated before your very eyes. Country, blues, rock, and roll, name it! Nighttime comes with neon lights, and it’s simply breathtaking. Once the honky tonks open at 10 am, they’re on till 3 am! Walking in a group is recommended at night for safety reasons.

The amount of effort put into ensuring that it’s almost identical to the original is impressive, to say the least. It also serves as an art museum, with rotating exhibits worth the visit.

Add this piece of classical architecture to your itinerary, and head over for some history and fun. Be sure to check out the big statue of Athena in the museum. Remarkable! The establishment offers military and student discounts too. Tickets for museum access are reasonably priced ($7 to $ 12), and you can check them out on their website in case of any changes. 28. Explore southern fare at Monell’s Dining & Catering

A visit to Nashville is hardly complete without a taste of some Southern fare. At Monell’s, it’s served family style; the charm of southern hospitality at its best. The owner, Michael King, has created quite a unique dining experience, and the clients keep coming. It’s an all-you-can-eat affair at affordable prices. The interesting but somewhat adventurous bit is the serving style. You are seated with strangers in a large dining room, and the plates are passed around for people to pick whatever they want. We’re talking cornbread, mashed potatoes, biscuits, gravy, fried chicken, pancakes, corn pudding, brisket, and everything else! The menu is regularly changed.

At the end of the meal, you’ll have probably known a few strangers, exchanged a couple of laughs, and perhaps made new friends. One more thing; no phones at the table. This is to encourage personal communication with the people at the table. If that’s something you’d be excited to try out, Monell’s is your spot! The locals love it, and recommend it for soul food to anyone visiting. They don’t take reservations, so just swing by and have a great time over food and friends.

This neat, little art gallery at Vanderbilt University is one of the many hidden gems in Nashville. Admission is free, and the place is hardly crowded. 32. Hike the scenic trails at Radnor Lake State Park

Trailhead at Radnor Lake State Park. , , via Wikimedia Commons

Located in Oak Hill, Radnor Lake State Park is one of the most popular sites for hiking in Nashville. It features over 5 miles of unpaved hiking trails meandering through the forest cover that surrounds the lake. Difficulty levels in the trails vary, and it’s important to be aware of how much of a challenge you can take. There’s the option of a casual stroll along the lake, or a hiking trail venturing into the woods. Both are scenic! Comfortable gear, including closed shoes, and a backpack for your bottle of water is necessary for hiking. Paths are well-marked and maintained.

This is a wildlife-protected area, hence no camping, fishing, swimming, or launching of private boats in the lake is allowed. Biking is only allowed on the paved road surrounding the park and is strictly prohibited on hiking trails. There’s an option of parking at the gas station across the street if the parking lot here is full. Before heading out for the hike, ensure you check in at the park office, buy a trail map and inquire about the conditions of the trail. It’s always wise to let a friend or family member know your hiking schedule too. You can plan your hike on the park’s website below. It’s easier to access the park by car since it’s within city limits. It should take you less than half an hour from downtown.

33. A quick history of the city at the Tennessee State Museum

The museum is located right by the Nashville Farmer’s Market. The State of Tennessee bears some significant parts of the United States history. One of these marks is the State’s association with slavery until the American Civil War. It depicts the history of the State through various exhibits, a digital learning center, six rotating galleries, and a permanent collection. Here, you’ll find Civil War artifacts, including battle flags, uniforms, and weapons used.

Other collections from the Spanish-American War, World War I, and World II are also featured. Visiting the museum is a great way to learn the history of the United States, especially events that took place in Tennessee. All this is available for free! There’s an interactive kids’ area on the first floor, making the place a great pick for a family excursion.

There’s free parking in the lot between the museum and the Farmer’s Market. It however fills up fast since it’s shared by visitors to both landmarks. If that happens, consider the 2-hour free parking on 6th and 7th Avenues. On weekends, it would be preferable to use alternate means of public transportation as parking is most limited then. It’s a short walking distance once you’re dropped off at the intersection of Rosa Parks Boulevard and Jefferson Street.

34. An evening stroll at Centennial Park

Centennial Park Trail Minor, West End Ave, , , via Wikimedia Commons

Centennial Park is situated barely two miles west of Downtown Nashville. The one-mile walking stroll at this park is a mixture of ease, beautiful scenery, and the pleasure of marveling at the Nashville Parthenon. The latter is a real-size replica of the original Greek Parthenon, and it’s quite a sight! The park is most popular due to the Parthenon, but there’s more to experience including a relaxing evening of live music from local musicians. The parking lot is vast, and you hardly need to worry about parking space.

The beautiful tree cover offers a cool shade on a hot afternoon. You can also walk your dog on a separate dog track. In case the hunger pangs hit, you’re sure to find food or ice cream trucks at reasonable prices. Although visiting the park is free, checking in at the Parthenon is not. There’s an entrance fee of $10 per adult and $ 8 for seniors (62+) and youth (4-17 years). You can walk, bike, or even picnic at the park for free! You can drive or use public means to get to the park. For the latter, use Bus No. 3 or 5 from Charlotte Avenue and 7th Avenue North.
