Southeast Washington’s Hanford Site was one of the locations used by the Manhattan Project to create the atomic bomb during World War II. For the Fat Man bomb, which was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, in August 1945, the location generated plutonium. The location is currently a decommissioned nuclear production complex that is being cleaned up and having its surroundings restored.
