According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, there were 24 boating fatalities on the Lake of the Ozarks in 2021. This is more than any other lake in Missouri. The majority of these fatalities were alcohol-related.

Several factors contribute to the high number of boating accidents and drownings on the Lake of the Ozarks including alcohol. 

10. The Lake is believed to have numerous graves beneath

Before the construction of Bagnell Dam, there were around 60 cemeteries in the region, with approximately 2800 graves. In response, Union Electric established eight additional cemeteries to accommodate these burials.

However, a problem developed since not all of the tombs were correctly identified throughout that period. Several plots were basic family burial sites marked by stones, trees, or other markings known only to family members.

Despite enormous efforts to transfer all of the graves before flooding for the dam, there is a strong likelihood that a few were mistakenly overlooked.

11. Lake of Ozarks has had a fair share of aircraft accidents

The Lake and its environs are not new to reported cases of aircraft accidents with the latest accident happening in 2023 in which two people lost their lives and one was seriously injured in the aftermath.

On Thursday afternoon July 13, 2023, a plane accident happened close to Grand Glaize Airport, resulting in the loss of two lives and causing severe injuries to another individual.

The incident took place approximately at midday, within a wooded vicinity near the intersection of Highway KK and Highway 54.

12. The Lake’s freak storm capsized an excursion boat and three people were never found

During Memorial Day Weekend, precisely on May 28, 1954, a heart-wrenching event transpired involving the Grand Glaize excursion vessel on the Lake of the Ozarks. Around 13 individuals embarked on this boat excursion, leading to the tragic circumstance that nearly half of them did not make it back to land.

The boat itself was relatively narrow, estimated at approximately eight feet in width. Passengers had the choice of sitting in the forward cabin on rows of leather cushions or taking a seat in the aft section under a canvas canopy. Unfortunately, there was no available public address system, and any attempts by the captain to provide commentary on notable spots were overshadowed by the deafening noise produced by the sizable 678-cubic-inch engine as per Lake expo.

A calamity unfolded a mere four miles into the voyage when an unanticipated storm, potentially accompanied by strong winds or even a tornado, abruptly swept over the lake, resulting in the boat capsizing. Tragically, this led to the loss of six lives, while seven individuals managed to survive, including the captain.

13. Lake of the Ozarks was a scene of an accident that involved a boat slamming into a house in 2023

Late on Saturday night July 22, 2023, a boat accident occurred at the Lake of the Ozarks, resulting in eight individuals being taken to the hospital. The boat veered out of the water and collided with a residence.

The incident unfolded just before midnight within the primary water channel of the expansive lake located in central Missouri, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The crash site was specified as the 1.3-mile point along the Osage arm.

The boat grounded itself and collided with a substantial house positioned near the water’s edge, causing significant damage to an outer wall. As a consequence of the impact, the boat overturned, ejecting all occupants from the vessel. Among the eight individuals on the boat, six suffered severe injuries, while the remaining two sustained moderate injuries.

14. The Lake is so treacherous that numerous people fall prey
