15 Things You Didn’t Know About Maren Morris
Born as Maren Larae Morris in 1990, she is an American singer and songwriter who has her music deeply rooted in the country genre. What makes her music unique is how the country genre she has adopted is always able to blend in elements of pop, R&B and even hip-hop. This is quite commendable since being able to mash all these up and coming up with a masterpiece is not that easy. Born and raised in Texas, Marren started her singing journey when still a child. She started to publicly perform in her preteen years and even toured all through Texas.
1. Maren’s parents owned a hair salon
Maren had a humble beginning and it is that beginning that shaped the kind of person she is today. Her parents were salon owners and Morris has always talked about how she spent so much of her childhood there. Her parents still own the business to date. She goes to show that regardless of your beginning, no one can really determine where your destination will be in the long run.
2. She received her first guitar at age 12.
Maren started her singing career at a fairly young age. She actually grew up singing along to the radio and singing karaoke. She grew up listening to country icon musicians like LeAnn Rimes and Pasty Cline. It is therefore not a surprise that she started making her own music before long. Her father, therefore, bought her first guitar when she was 12 and soon after, she started writing her own songs using it Eventually, this led the young singer to start performing in bars and venues in her home area. To refer to this, she mentioned,
“I started playing all around Texas—any bar or club that would let me in there. I was the only kid in school that had a job on the weekends.”
3. Maren’s father’s connection to music is still important to her
As she has always stated, her father has always had a great influence on her love for music. His connection to music is still quite clearly important to her. This comes out clearly when Maren posted a throwback photo of the two of them playing guitar and the caption read, “My father’s daughter.” She keeps referring to how thankful she is to her dad for the support he gave and the belief in her dreams he always showed.
4. Maren released other albums before her major label debut.
What most people don’t know is that before her big break with the ‘My Church’ song after signing with Columbia Records, Maren had had an extensive career as an independent artist. For instance, in 2005, she released an album by name, “Walk On,” in 2007 she released ‘All That it Takes’ and in 2011 she released the album, ‘Live Wire.’
5. Maren’s major recognition came with the release of ‘My Church’ song
It was not until the release of her independent, self-titled EP called Maren Morris that Maren Morris started getting long overdue recognition. This EP, which featured her very popular song, ‘my church,‘ earned about 2.5 million streams on Spotify and made it to the Viral 50 chart. This release is what eventually made the singer get a record deal with Columbia Nashville.
6. Maren Morris is a successful songwriter for other artists
This is another thing that gained Maren all the attention and recognition in the mainstream country community. Her songwriting skills are phenomenal and she has managed to write for many other popular artists. An example is Tim McGraw’s Last Turn Home and also Kelly Clarkson’s Second Wind for her Piece by Piece album. Other popular artists include Brothers Osborne, Kree Harrison and even Jessie James Decker
7. She had a big hand in the music on ABC’s ‘Nashville’

If you have ever watched Nashville then you know that it is quite an amazing TV show that features various genres of country music. So not only has Maren had a hand in writing songs for real-life artists, she has also written so many songs for many of the fictional characters in this TV show produced by ABC. For instance, she wrote tunes for actor Connie Britton, Clare Bowen, Will Chase, Panettiere and Sam Palladio.
8. Maren deals with stage fright.
If you are a performer of any kind, you do know how crippling stage fright can be. I mean, it can literally paralyze you and make you too scared to do anything. Maren is no exception to this and she uses her platform to show that it is quite okay to have stage fright. Although she has performed countless times all over the world, she admitted to Women’s Health that stage fright is still something she deals with quite often. It keeps creeping in her mind whenever she’s ready to perform. She mentioned,
“Some parts of it never go away. When I get out there and relax into it, I’m fine.”
9. She used to smoke as a coping mechanism
Many of us deal with our issues differently. This can range from abusing drugs to some other form of addiction. Maren was no exception to this. She confessed to the same Women’s Magazine in 2019 that for a long time, she used to smoke as a coping mechanism for her many challenges in life. However, nowadays she prefers to spend more time with family and friends and binge-watch shows as a way to relieve stress.
10. She has struggled with postpartum depression
In March 2020, Morris and her husband Ryan Hurd gave birth to their first child, Hayes Andrew Hurd, and in September, she revealed that she struggled with postpartum depression. She shared the details in an interview with CBS This Morning.
“I’m kind of coming through the tunnel now. I feel back to normal. Fortunately, I was able to do phone therapy during the pandemic and people that love me around me were like, ‘Hey, if you feel like you’re drowning right now, there’s help.’”
She explained that the weight of becoming a parent and trying to do everything rights made her feel too overwhelmed. Moreover, having to cancel her tours and let go of her crew due to the pandemic contributed mightly to her depression.
11. Maren doesn’t entertain internet trolls and cyber bullying.
In the day and age of technology and cyberbullying, so many famous people are usually on the receiving end of internet trolling. Maren however is one individual who has never been afraid to speak her mind especially on social media. She is known to shutting down trolls who criticize her image or her parenting. An example is when she responded to a social media user that found it okay to comment and troll on a picture she had posted that showed her cleavage. The comment was mean spirited but Maren was quick to put her in her place. She responded with a,
“Girl BYE. Don’t let my boobs knock you on the way out.”
12. Her husband is very supportive of her
Maren has often praised her husband for the support he has always given. Even when dealing with haters online, he has taken her side. A good example is when Maren was trolled on the internet for posting a picture of herself and her son on a lake float having a good time but without wearing life jackets. Her husband had this to say to the commenter,
“I’d just like to say, my wife usually doesn’t need me to defend her, but she’s a great mom, and my kid was not unsafe on a float in 1 feet of water being held by an adult with 5 people watching so she could get a picture,”
13. Maren really loves Beyonce
Morris admitted to really being a fan of Beyonce and we cannot really blame her. I mean, Beyonce is quite an icon herself having managed to sell millions of records worldwide. She admitted to always going for Beyonce’s Halo song whenever she goes for karaoke.
14. Maren Morris is heavily inspired by Sheryl Crow
Morris has admitted to being so inspired by Sheryl Crow especially her album known as Tuesday Night Music Club. She says what really inspires her when it comes to Sheryl’s works is how she is always able to bend genre lines and come up with beautiful masterpieces
15. She grew up listening to Dolly Parton
If you are a country fan, then most definitely you know who Dolly Parton is and the amazing songs she has always managed to come up with. I mean, this phenomenal woman wrote Jolene as a heartbreak song but somehow managed to make the song all about Jolene. Anyway, she is really good in what she does. Thus, she is one of the people Maren Morris grew up listening to and even played a role in making her a good country singer. In addition to Parton, she also grew up listening to Hank Williams Jr and R&B icons like Chaka Khan.
