10 Trailblazing Black Eastern Stars Who Illuminated the Masonic Path

Freemasonry is viewed positively as providing opportunities for personal growth and philanthropy by some people. Others criticise its secrecy and exclusivity. It is my view that masonic rituals and symbolism should likely be viewed more as tradition than statements of absolute truth or morality. From my research there seems to be no strong evidence that  Freemason orders cause significant harm beyond perhaps perpetuating a different  way of thinking.

Freemasonry has traditionally had a complex relationship with women for centuries. A few women were involved in Freemasonry before the 18th century, despite prohibitions in the Premier Grand Lodge of England. In 1850, Rob Morris created the Order of the Eastern Star for Freemasons and their female relatives.

In 1874, Prince Hall’s Order of the Eastern Stars, Queen Esther Chapter No. 1 was created in Washington, DC in the home of Mrs. Georgiana Thomas. It is arguably  the oldest sorority-based Black women’s organisation in America. The first chapter of the Adoptive Rite among ladies of colour

The Order of the Eastern Star is a Masonic-affiliated fraternal organisation that admits both women and men. It has championed equality, charity, and the elevation of humanity through its teachings based on Biblical figures and Masonic tenets. In honour of Black History Month, let us shine a light on 10 of these remarkable Black Eastern Stars and their legacies that have helped the order flourish.

1.   Maya Angelou

She  was an American poet, author, educator, and civil rights activist known for her impactful autobiographies and iconic poems. Some of her best-known works are I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and the poem Still I Rise. Angelou had a prolific career and made incredible contributions to literature, culture, and social change. Maya Angelou, a luminary in literature and a cherished member of the Minnesota Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, brought her poetic wisdom and eloquence to the Masonic journey.

As a guiding light, Angelou‘s influence extended beyond the written word, permeating the hearts and minds of those within the Eastern Stars. Her profound understanding of the human experience and the interconnectedness of all beings resonated with the core tenets of Freemasonry. Her legacy endures as a source of inspiration, reminding Eastern Stars that the Masonic journey is not only a collective endeavor but also an exploration of the interconnectedness of human existence.

2. Mrs. Georgiana Thomas

A revered figure within Prince Hall’s Order of the Eastern Stars, Queen Esther Chapter No. 1, embodied the principles of sisterhood, compassion, and devotion. As a beacon of strength, she tirelessly worked to foster a sense of unity among members, encouraging them to walk the Masonic path with unwavering dedication. Mrs Thomas’s leadership extended beyond the confines of ritualistic ceremonies; she actively engaged in community outreach, exemplifying the Masonic commitment to charitable endeavours.

Her legacy is etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege of witnessing her tireless efforts in implementing the Masonic principles. Whether guiding initiates through symbolic rituals or offering a compassionate ear to those in need,  Georgiana Thomas was a living testament to the transformative power of Freemasonry.

3.   Worthy Matron Sister Martha Welch

Another luminary within the Order left an indelible mark on the Masonic journey through her grace, wisdom, and commitment to fostering sisterhood. Sister Welch’s tenure as Worthy Matron was marked by inclusivity and genuine camaraderie among members. She believed in the power of collaboration, recognizing that each member brought unique strengths to the collective journey.

Under Sister Welch’s guidance, the Eastern Stars became a sanctuary of shared purpose, where individuals were encouraged to embrace their roles as contributors to the greater Masonic community. 4.   Bro. Thornton A. Jackson

The first Worthy Patron of Queen Esther Chapter No. 1. A stalwart in the Masonic fraternity, He carried the belief in the path of Freemasonry with a profound sense of honour and duty. As a Worthy Patron, his leadership transcended the ordinary, setting a standard of excellence and integrity for others to follow. Bro. Jackson’s commitment to upholding the principles of the Order extended beyond ceremonial duties; he actively sought opportunities to impart his knowledge and insights to fellow members.

His influence created a ripple effect, inspiring others to delve deeper into the teachings of Freemasonry and embody its core values in their daily lives. Bro. Thornton A. 5.  Magdalene Hendricks

A passionate advocate for empowerment and equality. Her tireless efforts to promote exclusivity and understanding within the Masonic community transformed the landscape of the organisation. Magdalene’s legacy is woven into the fabric of the Eastern Stars. Her advocacy for the rights and recognition of all members, irrespective of gender or background, laid the foundation for a more enlightened and progressive path.

6.  Emma V. Kelley

Emma Kelley is a distinguished American educator, was a shining example within the Masonic community, illuminating the path of knowledge and enlightenment. Her dedication to education went beyond the traditional classroom setting, as she actively promoted the principles of learning, growth, and intellectual curiosity within the Order of the Eastern Stars. Emma V. Kelley’s influence extended to the educational sphere, leaving an enduring legacy that inspires a thirst for knowledge and a commitment to lifelong learning.

7.   Margaret Delores Scott

A devoted member of the Daughters of Elks, a female auxiliary group supporting the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE), an American fraternal order and social club. She played a pivotal role in illuminating the Masonic path in the black community through her unwavering commitment to community service.

Scott’s tireless efforts in charitable endeavours and her dedication to the principles of benevolence and compassion made her a revered figure within the Eastern Stars. As a beacon of altruism, she exemplified the transformative power of Masonic values in action, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those she served.

8.   Rosa Parks

Renowned civil rights activist brought her unwavering commitment to justice and equality into the realm of the Order of the Eastern Stars. Civil rights activist known for refusal to give up her bus seat: Rosa Parks (1913-2005) was an iconic American civil rights activist who refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955.

Her defiant act sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott and was a pivotal moment in the American civil rights movement against racial segregation. Her courage and resilience illuminated the Masonic path, inspiring members to embody the values of fairness, equality, and the pursuit of a more just society.

9. Ruth M. Kirk

10.  Maxine Waters

Maxine Waters (born 1938) is an American politician serving California’s 43rd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2013.  prominent American politician became a guiding light within the Order through her advocacy for social and political change. Waters’s commitment to justice and her fearless pursuit of equality echoed the core principles of Freemasonry.

As a beacon of political leadership, she encouraged Eastern Stars to be actively engaged in broader societal conversations. She emphasised the importance of using one’s influence to foster positive change and uphold the principles of the Masonic journey. Waters is considered one of the most powerful politicians in Washington and has focused heavily on issues related to social justice and equality.

The list includes several noteworthy women and men who were part of the Order of the Eastern Stars, an organisation with historical ties to Freemasonry that welcomed both genders and all races. Their involvement speaks to the Order’s more inclusive membership policies compared to certain other fraternal orders of the time. The organisation aimed to bring together individuals of upstanding moral character to work for the greater good, an admirable goal still relevant today. Though details on these specific members are limited, their dedication to service is evidenced by their participation alone.
