Timothy Tarpeh Weah is an American professional football/soccer player. He plays primarily as a winger, more so on the left side but can be deployed centrally as a striker as well.
Timothy currently plays for French Ligue 1 club Lille and the United States national team (USMNT). If you watched any USA game at the 2022 Qatar World Cup then you are familiar with his game.
At 22 years of age, he scored USMNT’s first goal at the tournament. Timothy Weah leads a pretty interesting life on and off the pitch. From being the son of a football great to his spell at PSG, this article will highlight some need-to-know facts about Timothy’s life and career.
1. Born February 22nd, 2000
Timothy Weah was born in 2000 on February 22nd to Clar (mother) and George (Father) Weah. This was in Brooklyn, New York, United States of America. He is nicknamed – The Prince of Monrovia.
2. Two Older Siblings
Timothy is the last-born child and has two older siblings, a brother, and a sister. All three were born in the marital union of George and Clar who wed in 1992.
His older brother (the firstborn) is called George Jr., after their father. George Jr. like his father is a former professional soccer player who played mostly as a midfielder.
He played mostly in Swiss clubs including Wohlen, Baden, and La Chaux-de-Fonds where he retired in 2018. Timothy and George’s sister is known as Tita.
3. His Father Is Football Royalty
As mentioned, Timothy Weah is the son of George Weah. George Weah is one of the Greatest African football players of all time. He was the 1995 FIFA World Player of the Year and also won the Ballon d’Or in the same year.
To date, he remains the only African player to have won any of these awards. George Weah played for some of the biggest football clubs in Europe. These include; Monaco, AC Milan, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Marseille.
4. His Father is the President of Liberia

Yes, the former Ballon d’Or winner is a president. After retiring from professional football, George Weah became involved with politics in Liberia.
He established the Congress for Democratic Change and made an unsuccessful presidential bid in 2005. In 2011in ran for vice president unsuccessfully. In 2014 he was elected to the Senate in Liberia to represent Montserrado County.
Following the 2017 Liberia elections, Weah was elected President and was sworn in on 22nd January 2018. So, yes, Timothy Weah is a member of the Liberian first family.
5. His Mother Was His First Soccer Coach
Seeing how big of a football star his father was, one would assume he was Timothy’s coach. However, this was not the case.
Timothy gained an interest in soccer from a young age. Not surprising considering who his father is. However, they lived in America and his father was mostly away so his mother became Timothy’s first football coach.
6. Tried Out with Chelsea in 2013
Early in his life, Timothy and his family moved from New York to Florida and back again. This was in part to get him the best soccer facilities available. After moving back to New York, he joined his Uncle’s Rosedale Soccer Club in Queens, New York.
He later joined BW Gottschee where he played for 3 years before moving to the New York Red Bulls Academy in 2013. In 2013 he had a trial at the English club Chelsea but later relocated to France and joined the Âé¶¹APP Saint-Germain Academy in 2014.
7. Signed His First Professional Contract In 2017
After Joining the PSG academy, Tim cruised through the ranks impressing with each performance. In his first start at the academy, he was part of a youth team that beat Ludogorets Razgrad 8-1. He scored a hat trick in the match.
Fast forward 3 years later, Tim Weah signed his first professional contract with PSG on July 3rd, 2017. He was now a member of his father’s former team. He made his first start in a 0-0 draw with Caen and scored his first goal for PSG in a 4-0 win against Monaco.
8. He Had a Loan Spell at Celtic in Scotland
In January 2019, Tim moved to Scotland and joined Celtic on a 6-month loan. His stint was successful as he won the Scottish Premiership and reached the final of the Scottish Cup Final.
However, he was unable to play in said final as his loan spell was terminated. This was because he had been called up to the USA’s U20 squad for the World Cup.
9. Moved to Current Club Lille in 2019 from PSG
In June 2019, Timothy Weah was transferred from PSG to their Ligue 1 rivals Lille for an undisclosed fee. The fee was later reported to be in the region of €10 million (then $11.37 million).
He missed a majority of his first year at the club due to persistent injuries but the second season saw him become a regular feature.
10. Won Ligue 1 Three Times
Timothy Has won several trophies in his budding career. This includes the Ligue 1 title three times. That is twice at PSG and once with Lille in the 2020/21 season.
He has also won the French Super Cup twice. In the 2018/18 season with PSG and the 2021/22 season with Lille. He also won the Scottish Championship and the Scottish Cup with Celtic in the 2018/19 season.
11. Scored USA’s First Goal at the 2022 World Cup
Tim made his debut for USMNT on March 27th, 2018 in a 1-0 win over Paraguay. He has since played 29 games and scored 4 times for his country.
This includes the all-important goal in USA’s opener against Wales assisted by Christian Pulisic. After representing the USA at the World Cup, he managed to surpass his overachieving father. That is because even with all his accolades, the great George Weah sadly never played on the World Cup stage.
