10 Things to Know about the Murdaugh Murders


 

The Murdaugh family is a renowned and prominent American legal family in the region of South Carolina. Since 1910, three members of the Murdaugh family consecutively served as solicitors. They were in charge of prosecuting several criminal cases in the state’s 14th circuit district.

In Hampton, South Carolina, the family also established a renowned civil litigation law company with a focus on personal injury cases. Alex Murdaugh’s son, Paul Murdaugh, and other members of the Murdaugh family were charged in a tragic boating accident in 2019 amid allegations of preferential treatment. Paul and Alex Murdaugh’s wife were killed in June 2021.

Their murders are allegedly the fault of Alex. In addition, Alex was charged with embezzlement from his law company, which he left in September 2021. He was disbarred by the state of South Carolina and has been imprisoned since October 2021 while awaiting trial. The Alex Murdaugh murder trial started in January 2023.

1. The Victims were members of the Murdaugh Family, a Prominent American Legal Family

Margaret “Maggie” Murdaugh, 52, was the wife of Richard Alex Murdaugh who was from the Murdaugh family. Maggie was murdered alongside her son, Paul Murdaugh, 22.

The Murdaugh family is a prominent and famous American legal family who were located in the Low-country region of South Carolina, the United States. This family has been practicing law in South Carolina since 1910. Three generations of the Murdaugh family have served as solicitors of the Judicial Circuit for over eighty-six years.

2. The Murdaughs were Shot Multiple Times with Different Weapons

On 7th June 2021, Richard Alex Murdaugh called 911 using his phone at around 10 PM with some shocking news. He reported that he had discovered the bodies of his 22-year-old son Paul and 52-year-old wife Maggie near the dog kennels. This was at the family’s hunting lodge in Islandton, South Carolina.

Alex reported that they had been shot multiple times and used different weapons. Mr. Alex also reported that at the time of the killings, he was not around. He revealed that he was with his terminally ill father, Randolph III, and his mother who has dementia.

3. Maggie was Estranged from Alex and Lived Separately before her Death

The murder of Margaret Murdaugh came at a very untimely moment. At the time that she was murdered at the Murdaugh’s hunting lodge, she was estranged from Alex Murdaugh.

She was living separately from Alex Murdaugh at their beach home. The reports by the police indicated that Alex Murdaugh had invited Maggie to meet him at the lodge so that they could travel together to see Randolph. She was later found killed alongside her son as stated by Alex.

4. Maggie had Insisted on Meeting in Public before Heading to the Lodge

The love life of Alex Murdaugh and Margaret Murdaugh was full of complications. This led to them living apart even though they never went ahead for a divorce.

After Alex had asked Margaret to meet him at the family’s hunting lodge, Maggie was not okay with that idea. She had insisted on the two meeting at a public place.

Maggie had even gone ahead and texted a close friend about the behavior of Alex which she had doubted his intentions. She had texted the friend saying that Alex sounded fishy and was up to something.

Her instincts had told her not to head out to the lodge but after Alex insisted on meeting there, she gave in. She parked her car at the house and walked towards the dog kennels where Paul was. Unfortunately, this is the same spot where they were killed and the bodies retrieved from.

5. Blood Spatter on Alex’s Clothing and Phone Footage got him Arrested for the Murders

On the evening of 7th June 2021, at around 10 PM, Alex Murdaugh made a call to the police using his phone reporting about the murders. He made a report that he had stumbled upon the bodies of Maggie and his son at the dog kennels.

However, he was arrested as the main suspect because of several reasons that linked him to the murders. The Colleton County Grand Jury charged Alex with two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon that he used in the killings.

Sources also revealed that a high-velocity blood spatter on Alex’s clothing and his phone footage placed him at the crime scene. There was also the report that Alex shot his wife using a rifle, and used a shotgun to shoot his son.

6. The Murdaugh Murders were Speculated to be a Distraction against Alex’s Financial Crimes

The murders of Margaret Murdaugh and her son, Paul Murdaugh shocked many people. Their family was going through several legal issues which overwhelmed Alex Murdaugh.

Alex Murdaugh had several financial crimes cases that were in court. After the murders, prosecutors suggested that the motive of the murders was to seek sympathy. The prosecutors believed that Alex Murdaugh wanted a distraction from his financial crimes which had gone public.

“In the end, Murdaugh used the killings as a strategy to divert attention from himself and buy himself some more time to try and avoid his financial crimes from being discovered, which—if revealed—would lead to Murdaugh’s personal, legal, and financial devastation.” Was a statement from the prosecutors.

7. Paul was Awaiting Trial in Connection to Killing a Woman in a Boat Accident

According to authorities, Paul was awaiting trial for a boat accident in 2019 that claimed the life of a 19-year-old lady. Records showed that in April of that year, Paul was detained and later charged with one count of boating under the influence (BUI) causing death and two counts of inflicting grievous bodily injury.

Paul, who was allegedly intoxicated, went behind the wheel of a boat with five passengers. They had attended a gathering on Parris Island that February. The boat slammed into a bridge piling at around two in the morning. 19-year-old Mallory Beach was ejected from the boat with her body was discovered a week later.

8. Alex was Battling Several Criminal Cases

Alex Murdaugh, an individual from a renowned family was not expected to be involved in several criminal cases. However, by the time of his arrest, Alex Murdaugh was being charged with several criminal cases.

Alongside the two murder counts on his wife and son, Alex faced multiple cases ranging from financial services. He was charged with narcotic distribution, tax evasion, forgery, 88 criminal charges for embezzlement and fraud, and several others.

9. Alex Pleaded Innocent in the Murdaughs Murders Case

In July 2022, Alex Murdaugh was arrested in connection to the murders of Margaret Murdaugh and her son Paul Murdaugh. He was presented before the court in connection to these murders but he pleaded not guilty.

His pledge of being innocent of the two murders never convinced the prosecutors who already want a tough sentence for him. The state prosecutors are seeking to have Alex Murdaugh sentenced to life in prison without parole rather than a death sentence.

10. Several Podcasts and Documentaries of the Murdaugh Murders have been Released

The Murdaugh Murders became widespread across the world and gained media attention. This led to several podcast and documentary releases by various media outlets.

The “Murdaugh Murders” podcast was released by Mandy Matney, the news director for FITSNews, on June 22, 2021. There have been 78 episodes as of February 3, 2023.

HBO Max revealed on September 8, 2021, that Campfire Studios would create a documentary series about the circumstances of the murders. On November 3, 2022, a documentary titled Low Country: The Murdaugh Dynasty was made available.

The Murdaugh Murders: Deadly Dynasty, a three-part miniseries, premiered on June 19, 2022, on Investigation Discovery. ABC aired 20/20 Exclusive: Murdaugh Family Murders on July 15, 2022. The “The Decline of a Dynasty” two-part episode of American Greed aired in December 2022.
