10 Things To Know About Emmett Till’s Murderers

On the evening of 24 August 1955, Emmett Louis Till went to a local grocery store owned by Carolyn Bryant and Roy Bryant along with several young relatives. At this store, things went south as Emmett’s interaction with Carolyn led to his murder. Her husband, 24-year-old Roy Bryant was not around during this scuffle.

He had gone on a shrimp hauling trip to Texas and returned home on 27th August. On his arrival, Carolyn did not reveal what had happened to her. He learned about the encounter of her wife with the young black boys from a person who used to frequent the store.

That’s when he summoned his 36-year-old half-brother J. W. Milam and went to confront Emmett Till at his uncle’s home. They were armed with a pistol when they went to Mose Wright’s home alongside some other men who worked for them. Emmett was taken away beaten, tortured, mutilated, and shot dead.

Roy Bryant and J. W. Milam then sunk the body in Tallahatchie River, but the bloated body was retrieved three days later. The two were the first accused but they were never arrested nor prosecuted as an all-white jury exonerated them. However, after a while, the two brothers confessed to murdering in an interview.

Life did not go well for the two as they were forced to live isolated lives because of what they had done. Roy Bryant lived until September 1994 when he died of cancer. On the other hand, J. W. Milam died of spinal cancer on 30th December 1980. Below are the 10 Things To Know About Emmett Till’s Murderers:

1. Roy Bryant Committed the Murder At the Age of 24

In the 1950s, African Americans had no special rights against their white counterparts in the South. They were assaulted and even murdered when they crossed the paths of the white inhabitants of these areas.

Roy Bryant and his 36-year-old half-brother J. W. Milam murdered Emmett Till. At the time of this crime, Roy Bryant was 24 years old.

2. Bryant was on an Extended Trip During Till’s and Carolyn’s Encouraged

On the evening of 24th August 1955, Carolyn Bryant and Emmett Till had their encounter at the Bryant’s grocery store. During this encounter, Roy Bryant was not at home as he was on an extended trip where he spent three days hauling shrimp to Texas before returning home.

On returning home, Carolyn did not reveal her encounter with Emmett Till to her husband. She feared that he could have assaulted him. However, Roy Bryant got to know about the whole incident from a person who used to frequent their store which made him angry.

3. Roy Aggressively Questioned Several Young Black Men about Emmett

Roy Bryant aggressively questioned several young black men who entered his grocery store after learning what had happened. That night, Bryant and J. W. Washington, another black guy, approached a black kid who was crossing the road. Bryant gave Washington the order to take the youngster into custody, place him in the back of his pickup vehicle, and drive him to be recognized by Carolyn’s friend who had seen the incident with Till.

The child in Bryant’s store had references from friends or parents, and Carolyn’s friend denied that the boy Bryant and Washington had detained was the one who had approached Carolyn. Bryant later discovered that the youngster involved in the incident was a Chicago native who was staying with Mose Wright.

4. Milam & Roy Drove to Wright’s Home Armed and Ready to Punish Till

The two half-brothers found out the whereabouts of the lad who had attacked Carolyn. They were heard by people discussing how they were going to get Emmett Till from his uncle’s home. On 28th August between 2 and 3:30 a.m., the two men headed to Wright’s home.

They drove to Mose Wright’s home in the early hours. To ensure that they got what they wanted, Milam was armed with a pistol and a flashlight which they could use to threaten them. After arriving at the home, they began questioning Wright about the boys from Chicago.

5. The Duo Refused Money Offered to them to Spare Till and threatened Wright

At the home of Mose Wright, the duo started trouble by asking where Emmett Till was at. Milam demanded to be taken to the “nigger who did the talking” as they pleaded for mercy.

Wright’s wife tried to offer money to them to leave the young boy, but Milam made Till hurry up and put his clothes on. Wright tried to persuade the two to spare Till, but they threatened him by stating that he could not see his next birthday if the lad was not produced.

6. Roy & Milam Recruited Two Black Men to Help Beat Emmett Till

After taking Emmett from his uncle’s home, they tied and put him in the back of a green pickup truck. They drove off toward Money, Mississippi but some witnesses stated that they went to Bryant’s grocery first. At the grocery store, they recruited two black men.

The purpose of recruiting the two young men was to assist them in beating up Emmett. They drove off to a barn in Drew. On their way, Emmet was pistol-whipped and left unconscious. These two young black men were claimed to have been forced into the ordeal because they used to work for Milam.

7. Emmett was Brutally Beaten by His Murders in a Barn

At the barn, the four men beat up Emmett Till as some witnesses heard him crying and screaming. One of the witnesses, Willie Reed, recalled walking home and hearing the beating and crying from the barn which made him alert a neighbor. When they walked back, Milam approached them and asked if they heard anything which they responded by saying No.

Another local neighbor revealed that he spotted one of the men washing blood off the truck. He also noticed a boot belonging to Emmett. However, Milam defended himself by stating that he had killed a deer and the boot was his.

8. Roy and Till Shot Emmett Dead and tossed Him into a River

After beating Emmett, the two are believed to have mutilated his body. They later shot Emmett and murdered him before finding a way of disposing of the body by tossing it over the Black Bayou Bridge near the Tallahatchie River. They then drove to Roy Bryant’s home where they burned Emmett’s clothes.

However, the two revealed that their initial plan was not to murder Emmett Till. In an interview with William Bradford Huie, the two claimed that they intended to beat Till up and then throw him over a river embankment. However, they claimed that Till was abusive which left them with no option but to kill him.

9. The Two Murderers were Exonerated by an All-white Jury during their Trial but Confessed Later

Wright made a report to the police and had Roy and Milam arrested. They were questioned about the whereabouts of Till to which they accepted that they had taken him making them get arrested for kidnapping. Three days later, the badly mutilated body of Emmett was discovered in Tallahatchie River by some boys who were fishing.

This led to the trial of the two men who were now linked to the murder of Till. The trial took place in September 1955, lasting for five very biased days. This case was so interesting that several black people attended the trials with race segregation being witnessed.

However, the two were exonerated by an all-white jury even though they had confessed to kidnapping Till. Later in a 1956 interview with Look magazine, the two men, who were shielded from double jeopardy, publicly revealed that they had tortured and killed the youngster, selling the details of how they did it for $4,000 (about $43,000 in 2022).

10. Roy and Milam Lived a Miserable Life and died of Cancer

Bryant and Milam’s support base in Mississippi decreased after they confessed to Huie that they had murdered Till. They were cut off by many of their former friends and backers, including those who had given their defense money. Banks refused to give them loans so they could sow crops since blacks boycotted their stores, which went out of business and shut down.

Milam succeeded in obtaining 217 acres (88 ha) and a $4,000 loan to cultivate cotton after straining to obtain a loan and find a landlord, but blacks refused to labor for him. He was compelled to pay whites more money. The two had to relocate to Texas where they lived low-key and avoided revealing their identities.

However, their lives continued to be miserable. On 30th December 1980, Milam died of spinal cancer at the age of sixty-one. On the other hand, Roy died of cancer on 1st September 1994 at the age of sixty-three.

Even though Emmet Till was brutally murdered by two white men, it brought a new dawn upon the blacks. He became an important icon for the civil rights movement. On 29th March 2022, President Joe Biden signed the Emmett Till Anti-lynching Act into law.
