1. In Glendale, it is illegal to drive a car in reverse on a public road

It may seem obvious, but it’s official. It is illegal to travel down an Arizona road in reverse. If you drive in reverse and  get trapped in a flooded area, you will be held liable for the costs of your emergency rescue services.

2. In Nogales, it is against the law to wear suspenders

It is illegal to wear suspenders in the state of Arizona. To be specific, this tends to be associated with Nogales specifically. However, this law no longer exists and you can freely wear your suspenders.

3. It is illegal to hunt camels in the state of Arizona

In an operation out of Camp Verde, Texas, they tested the capabilities of camels for military use. However, this program was suspended. Arizona, being Texas adjacent, thus made it illegal to hunt and kill camels. It is unclear if this law was ever applied. The last sighting of a live camel was made in 1891.

4. It is against the law for donkeys to sleep in bathtubs in Arizona

If you’ve driven on I-17 or any of major highways in Arizona that drive though hills and mountain areas, it’s common to see the ‘Burro Crossing’ signs. This alerts motorists that wild burros may cross the highway. 

5. It is illegal to have more than two dildos in a house in the city of Tombstone

This is the kind of law that seeks to uphold morality as opposed to curing a mischief. It outlaws the ownership of more than two dildos in one house.

6. In Maricopa County, it is illegal to have more than six girls living in the same house

In Maricopa County, Arizona, for example, it’s widely believed that no more than six unrelated girls or women can live in the same house. If more than six women live together, they must be operating a brothel.

7. It is illegal to refuse a person a glass of water in Arizona

In the summer-time, with temperatures reaching topping 120 degrees, often people will need water, but may not have the money to pay for it (mainly applies to homeless). Hence, the law. It is very much in effect today. Businesses are being reported and  heavily fined for refusing to supply water to those who ask for it.

8. In Tucson, it is illegal for women to wear pants

It was illegal for Tucson residents to appear in public wearing clothing that was “not of his or her sex.” However, no article of clothing is specifically mentioned in this law, and it is paid little attention in today’s law enforcement.

9. It is illegal to spit in public in the city of Goodyear

 It is unlawful for any person to spit upon any of the public sidewalks or crosswalks in the city. This law was enacted to ensure the city walks are kept  clean and to avoid the prevalence of such nuisance.

The saguaro cactus, revered by most Arizonians is a unique, beautiful, and iconic plant. It takes A saguaro can live for over 90 years and grow to be over 50 feet tall. Most saguaros won’t grow their first arm until they are 50-75 years old. It is illegal by state law to harm, destroy, or move a saguaro cactus. During construction, special permits must be acquired before saguaros can be moved.

In conclusion, Arizona’s collection of weird and strange laws is certainly interesting, if not outright bizarre. While some of these laws are outright weird, others have evolved over time. Nevertheless, the laws offer an interesting glimpse into the state’s history. It’s important to note that while some of these laws may be weird, some of them are still technically enforceable.
