10 Interesting Facts About Regina King

Regina King is an American actress best known for her performances in films and television shows such as If Beale Street Could Talk and American Crime. Regina’s parents divorced when she was a child, and she moved to Los Angeles with her mother.

She started her acting career as a teenager in 1985, with a supporting role in the sitcom 227. She made her film debut in 1991 with Boyz n the Hood and went on to play supporting roles in films such as Higher Learning, Jerry Maguire, and Enemy of the State. Her television career took precedence in the 2000s, with appearances on shows such as Leap of Faith, 24 and Southland.

She went on to play supporting roles in shows like The Big Bang Theory and Shameless. American Crime was her big break in 2015, and she won two Emmys for her performance. She also won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 2018 film If Beale Street Could Talk. She directed the film One Night in Miami in 2020, for which she received a Golden Globe Award for Best Director.

1. Regina King remained in public school while starring in 227

Few child stars have the opportunity to have the same educational experience as a regular student, but Regina King was one of the lucky ones. When she was 14 years old and cast as Brenda Jenkins on 227, her mother, a teacher, was concerned that NBC would place her in a smaller, private school where many young TV actors attend, keeping her “out of touch” with the perspective that public education provides, as she recounted in an interview with NPR. Marla Gibbs, King’s onscreen mother, understood her real mother’s concern, convincing her that the set of the hit sitcom was “a good space” for her daughter while she was attending Westchester High School in Los Angeles.

2. Regina initially aspired to be a dentist

Regina King had originally planned to be a dentist during her five years on 227. Unlike most people, she notices someone’s smile before their eyes. She wasn’t sure acting was the right path for her until she was in college (her second year at the University of Southern California, to be exact), especially after making her feature film debut in Boyz n the Hood in 1991.

3. King was initially cast as just Riley on Boondocks before also voicing Huey

The brutally satirical Adult Swim classic The Boondocks, in which Regina King voices both Huey and Riley Freeman, two Chicago-born children who move into their grandfather’s WASPy suburb, is another of Regina King’s most notable TV projects.

Originally, the actress was only cast as Riley, according to BuzzFeed UK, but after being a part of the search for Huey and observing creator Aaron McGruder’s notes for the character along the way, King persuaded them to cast her in both roles.

4. Her tattoo has a heart-warming backstory

Regina King looked to her son, Ian Alexander, Jr., for inspiration to play the young Freeman Brothers on The Boondocks, even though he was too young to watch the show at the time she was cast.

When Alexander was older, he suggested that he and his mother get matching tattoos by secretly selecting three Aramaic designs, and whichever design they both chose would be the final decision. According to King, the mutual choice turned out to be what translates to “unconditional love,” a part of motherhood that the actress has previously stated is especially important to her.

5. She won an Oscar for best supporting actress

Her performance in Barry Jenkins’ 2018 film If Beale Street Could Talk received critical acclaim and earned her the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. King also won the Critics’ Choice, Los Angeles Film Critics, New York Film Critics, National Society of Film Critics, and a slew of other critics’ awards for Supporting Actress, making her the most honoured actor of 2018.

6. Regina modelled her Oscar winning performance from her grandmother

Regina King frequently seeks inspiration from other people, as Good Morning America host Robin Roberts noted when speaking with her in 2018. The actress then explained how her performance in Barry Jenkins’ adaptation of James Baldwin’s 1974 novel, If Beale Street Could Talk, was inspired by her own grandmother, describing her as a woman who made you feel like everything was going to be okay.

In the film, King channels that reassuring wisdom as Sharon, whose daughter is pregnant with her imprisoned fiancé’s child, earning her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

7. She has a prolific career in directing TV shows

Regina King recently directed another significant adaptation, a cinematic adaptation of Kemp Powers’ Jim Crow-era stage play One Night in Miami, but this time from behind the camera. While the period piece was her feature film directorial debut, she already has several TV directing credits to her name. Beginning with an episode of the crime drama Southland, on which she also served as a series regular, King went on to direct episodes of Scandal, This Is Us, Shameless, and, most recently, Issa Rae’s Emmy-nominated comedy series Insecure.

8. Both she and her sister Regina King’s first names are translations of the word “Queen”

The sisters, who were born four years apart, have a strong bond, which is reinforced by their names, which translate to Queen in Spanish and Latin. That was done on purpose by their father. Regina realized they were both ‘Queen Kings’ when Reina was born.”

9. Her directorial debut earned her an Oscar nomination

One Night in Miami depicts the hours following Cassius Clay’s surprise victory over Sonny Liston on February 25, 1964. Clay (Eli Goree) travelled to the Hampton House Motel, a popular establishment among black visitors to Jim Crow-era Miami, accompanied by Brown (Aldis Hodge), civil rights leader Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), and singer-songwriter Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.). The specifics of the group’s post-fight discussion are unknown, but Clay announced the next morning that he was a proud convert to the anti-integrationist Nation of Islam. Soon after, he changed his name to Muhammad Ali.

10. Her son committed suicide

Ian Alexander Jr., the only child of Oscar winner Regina King, committed suicide at the age of 26. Alexander was a musician and DJ who frequently accompanied his mother to award ceremonies and star-studded events.
