Also known as Mary Ann Evans was a British author who lived from 1819 to 1880. During the Victorian era, she was one of the leading female authors. She was widely known for her pen name George Eliot. Her books explored different themes including religion, gender, class, and psychological insight.

The Mill on the Floss was published in 1860. It is based on the lives of Tom and Maggie Tulliver who grow up at Dorlcote Mill on the River Floss. The novel is set in the late 1820s or early 1830s. Her other famous book is Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe which was published in 1861. It depicts the life of Silas Marner who is a member of a small Calvinist congregation in Northern England.

George also had a number of novels including Romola, Daniel Deronda, Felix Holt, Brother Jacob, Impressions of Theophrastus Such, The Spanish Gypsy, Adam Bede, and Scenes of Clerical Life.

In 1885, John published a biography of George. He also established the George Eliot Hospital in Warwickshire. It is one of the largest hospitals in the United Kingdom and still bears her name.
