An arsenal is a place where arms and ammunition are made, maintained and repaired, stored, or issued, in any combination, whether privately or publicly owned. A sub-armory is a place of temporary storage or carrying of weapons and ammunition, such as any temporary post or patrol vehicle that is only operational at certain times of the day.

The term in English entered the language in the 16th century as a loanword from French: arsenal, itself deriving from the Italian: Arsenale, which in turn is thought to be a corruption of Arabic. It means “manufacturing shop”. In the article are the top ten intriguing facts about Lviv Arsenal.

1. Lviv Arsenal is located in Ukraine

Lviv Arsenal is located in the city of Lviv, Ukraine. The entrance to the museum of City Arsenal, located in Pidvalna street, on May 16 in Lviv. The City Arsenal is the oldest of three historic arsenal buildings in Lviv, Ukraine. The other two arsenal buildings in Lviv are; Royal Arsenal and Sieniawski Arsenal.

2. Lviv Arsenal was built on a medieval structure of unknown purpose

Even though the Lviv Arsenal building, in its present shape, was erected in 1554–56. This makes it the oldest surviving arsenic building. However, the building itself was erected above a 14th-century structure of an unknown function. The 14th-century structure is not indicated in Ukrainian historical buildings.

3. king Vladislav IV is credited for building Lviv Arsenal

The Royal Arsenal was built according to the project of the architect-fortifier P. Grodzitsky. However, the arsenal was built by order of the Polish king Vladislav IV. Due to the readiness for war, Lviv, as a strategically important city, had to have several depots of weapons and ammunition.

Take note that the Royal Arsenal was built as a substitute for Lviv Arsenal. This is because it was dangerous to store all the ammunition in one place. The Royal Arsenal was the other building arsenal that was erected between the city walls.

4. Lviv Arsenal is a rectangular stone two-story structure

The building is built of stone. Its beautiful facade is more reminiscent of some kind of palace or the house of a wealthy merchant than a military warehouse. The front part of the building is decorated with a large loggia and a pediment.

The decorations are in the Baroque style. On the side facade, grand carved stone portal. The stone still exists. The rectangular two-story structure has a miniature octagonal tower on the north side.

5. Lviv Arsenal featured a torture chamber initially

Lviv Arsenal was formerly attached to the city walls. Then, it was used as a torture chamber and not an armory building. A torture chamber is a room where torture is inflicted. The medieval torture chamber was windowless and often built underground.

Torture chambers often were lit by a few candles, and were specifically designed to induce “horror, dread, and despair” to anyone but those possessing a strong mind and “nerves of steel”.

6. Lviv Arsenal was once a unique torture chamber

Historically, torture chambers were located in royal palaces, castles of the nobility, and even buildings belonging to the church. This fact did not apply to Lviv Arsenal when it served as a torture chamber. Its location is Lviv City. Although it was commissioned by king Vladislav IV, it was not located in his palace.

The medieval torture chamber was windowless and often built underground. This is another fact to show that Lviv Arsenal as a torture station was not built underground. Instead, it stood as a two-storey building.

7. The building was blown up during the Great Northern War

The Great Northern War happened from 1700–1721. It was a conflict in which a coalition led by the Tsardom of Russia successfully contested the supremacy of the Swedish Empire in Northern, Central, and Eastern Europe.

The initial leaders of the anti-Swedish alliance were Peter I of Russia, Frederick IV of Denmark–Norway, and Augustus II the Strong of Saxony–Poland–Lithuania. The arsenal building was blown up by the Swedes during the war but was subsequently restored.

8. At present Lviv Arsenal houses an armory museum

Arsenal and armory are mostly regarded as synonyms. However, there is a subtle difference in the usage of the two synonyms. As its name suggests, Arsenal was specifically established to store weapons by the commission of King Vladislav IV and not as a torture chamber.

Currently, a great assortment of weapons used from the 15th to 18th centuries is stored in the museum. There is traditional Ukrainian fighting equipment, mixed with Japanese, Turkish, and many other countries’ equipment. There are swords, maces, guns, shields, crossbows, cannons, and armor.

9. The museum has good combat history of Lviv

There is a good intro to the numerous peoples who fought for this territory. The Arsenal Museum is a great place to visit to get an understanding of Lviv’s history. If you happen to visit this museum you will understand quite how many groups of people had attacked this

The museum is located on two floors of the Arsenal. It is quite small but still worth visiting. Some of the information at the start of the museum is not in English but as you get further into the arsenal there are English notes.

Lviv Arsenal is quite small in size but is packed full of fantastic displays of weapons through the ages. You can pleasantly be surprised at just how fascinating the museum is! It takes about 45 minutes to go through if you take your time and read the displays. Descriptions are also given in English.

Don’t miss the chance to visit Lviv Arsenal. The building is in Gothic style and dating to the 16th century.
