Tibet, on the lofty Tibetan Plateau on the northern side of the Himalayas, is an autonomous region of China. It’s nicknamed the “Roof of the World” for its towering peaks. It shares Mt. Everest with Nepal.

1. Fifth Dalai Lama

The fifth Dalai Lama, Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso was a key religious and temporal leader of Tibet. The fifth Dalai Lama was credited with unifying central Tibet after a protracted era of civil wars.

As an independent head of state, he built the bulk of famous Potala Palace, established diplomatic relations with China and also met with early European explorers. He was the first Dalai Lama to become spiritual and political leader of Tibet and the greatest of all the Dalai Lamas.

2. Tobgyal

Tobgyal is a Chinese actor of Tibetan descent, best known in film for portraying a tribal chief in Red River Valley (1997), Ri Tai in Kekexili: Mountain Patrol (2004), and Zhan Tiejun in No Man’s Land (2013). He is a National Class-A Actor. He is a member of the China Theater Association and China Film and Television Association.

3. Han Hong

Han Hong is a Chinese singer and songwriter of mixed Tibetan and Han ethnicity. She was born in Chamdo on September 26, 1971. Like her mother, a Tibetan singer, Han Hong is able to shift quite easily from piercing high pitches to soft low tones.

Han Hong is one of the most popular Chinese female musicians who specializes in a variety of Chinese folk music. Most of Han’s work reflect the Tibetan culture.

4. Tseten Dolma

Tseten Dolma is a Tibetan soprano. She was born August 1, 1937 to a serf family in Shigatse, Tibet. Tseten was influenced by Tibetan folk music from a very young age, and first performed on stage in 1956. She is known for starring in the 1965 musical epic The East Is Red.

In 1958, she joined the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, learning from professor Wang Pinsu. She has served the Tibet branch of the Chinese Musicians’ Association in various roles since the 1960s, including being chairman, director and vice-chairman of CMA, deputy secretary of Bureau of Cultural Affairs of Tibet Autonomous Region.

5. Qu Ni Tsering

Qu Ni Tsering, born on May 15, 1986 in Ali, Tibet, is a film and television actress, dancer and pop singer in Mainland China. In 1998, Qu Ni Tsering came into the public eye as a brand spokesperson for a certain pharmaceutical industry; in 1999, she starred in the screen debut “Play My Zanianqin”.

Its main achievements include: champion of the 56 Golden Flower Beauty Pageant of National Minority Nationalities, and the talent show “Come on!” “Oriental Angel” national championship; main works include: “Soul on the Leather Strap”, “Memory Folding”, “Armor Piercing Bullet”, “Reba Love”, “Long Drifting Zhuang Song”, “Midnight Shooting Door”, etc.

6. Danqu Adi

10. Lobsang Sangay

Lobsang Sangay, (born 1968, Darjiling, India), Tibetan scholar and political leader who became prime minister in the Tibetan Central Administration, the Tibetan government-in-exile, in 2011.

He was both the first non-monk and the first person born outside Tibet to hold the position. Sangay was born in a refugee camp for Tibetan exiles. His father, a former Buddhist monk, kept livestock and managed to save money to send his son to school. Sangay studied at the University of Delhi, earning a Bachelor of Laws degree.
