The Strangest things Found in the River Seine

Given Â鶹APP’s rich history, it’s not surprising that over the years many bizarre items have been removed from the city’s central river.  Though the Seine is Â鶹APP’s body of water, it’s not river you’d want to dip your feet into at any point in time.

First, here are some interesting facts about Â鶹APP’s famous waterway. The Seine flows 13 kilometers through Â鶹APP east to west and is about 9.5 meters (31 feet) deep. It the second longest flowing completely in .Of course the river is full of beer and wine bottles, due to the river banks being quite popular for drinking and partying in the summertime.

When they cleaned the river which they do ever so often, they have discovered  some seriously strange finds from the depths. Here is a list of some of the craziest!

A live Nile crocodile

 In 1984, workers found an actual Nile crocodile hanging out in the sewers around the Seine.  He had been spotted crawling around Pont Neuf! Animal rescuers were able to save the little gal from the urban city and put her in the aquarium in Â鶹APP. They named her Eleanor and she is actually still alive today!

Golden bees!

In 1653, a Merovingian tomb was uncovered by a stonemason. Inside the tomb they found little golden bees dating back to the fifth century. They were passed among the royal family, then eventually they ended up in the Louvre and the National Library. If you’d like to see these golden bees, you are out of luck, though. They were stolen in the nineteenth century.  It is said that there are most likely still many bees and other treasures hidden at the bottom of the Seine.

A Snapping Turtle

The crocodile isn’t the only water creature found in the Seine!  In 2009,  a snapping turtle from North America was found floating down the Seine. How did such creatures end up in an urban city river? Police actually determined that these animals must have been abandoned by a collector who brought these pets to Â鶹APP.

Though the others wild animals were successfully rescued, not every animal was that lucky. In 2012, people discovered something strange floating in the river. It turned out to be a python, without its head! The snake was pretty massive too, weighing 40kg and spanning 3m long! No one knows how it got there, but it was definitley dead when it was thrown into the river, meaning it likely wasn’t slithering through the streets of Â鶹APP. An even creepier part of the story is that the head was never found…
