Basketball fanatics know the name Linsanity, and who it refers to. Linsanity as an American icon, a decade later still is remembered as the second most famous American of Asian origin person in the world. A man who in his sudden ascendancy has continued to support his community, even to the detriment of his own National Basketball Association career. For those who have never heard nor been L-insane, here are the 10 interesting facts about Jeremy Lin.

1. Jeremy Played in eight different teams in 9 seasons

Ten years ago in February 2012, Jeremy Lin, joined the NBA and in a career that spanned more than 7 years has played an out-of-this-world performance with eight different teams in 9 seasons before joining the China Basketball Associations Beijing Ducks in 2019.

He got to play for the Knicks on February 4  after warming the bench when one of his teammates was injured in a game against the New Jersey nets, and he went on to enable the team to achieve a seven-game winning streak from what was once a frustrating losing team.

2. Lin Grew up in a Big, Close family

Jeremy Lin’s chinese name is Lin Shuhao and he was born in Torrance California on August 23. 1988. His mother’s name is Shirley, who is originally from Taiwan with roots in China’s Zhejiang province while, his father, Genie-Ming, is from the Han Chinese group that is found in Fujian, Taiwan. As a child, he was very close with his grandmother and is one of the three sons born to his family.

 At a young age, his parents as well as grandmother taught him to always aspire to be a team player, as well as, be willing to start as an underdog.

3. Jeremy didn’t pass the “Eye Test”

Jeremy Lin attended Palo Alto High School where his mother was instrumental in the development of a National Junior Basketball Program. He was the captain of the basketball team and he lead them to a 32-1 record to clinch the California Interscholastic Federation Division II state title in his senior year.

However, despite an impressive high school record, no college recruiters offered him a  Division 1 scholarship in all the patriot and Ivy League Schools including his dream school UCLA as well as the neighboring Stanford but only Brown and Harvard showed interest in him. The recruiters overlooked his appearance as he appeared not to be tall enough or strong thus failing the “eye test” as they lacked a reference for the seemingly weak and deceptively athletic player.

4. Lin Chance and Changing the face of the Game

Lin joins several prominent first professional players to break the barrier in the NBA. He is the first Chinese American player in the NBA and the fourth male Asian American to break barriers and defy stereotypes that reek in the American basketball league.  He joins Wataru Wat Misaka,  Zheng Haixia, and  Wang Zhizhi who played with the Mavericks.

5. Lin sanity Fever Bites and the Jeremy Lin Show continues

The energy in New York was feverish, and the chants of the name Jeremy Lin, intoxicating.  The game was against the Utah Jazz and Lin scored 28 points in his first career start. Two days later while facing the Wizards from Washington, he scored 23 points and 10 career-high assists for the Knicks to return home victorious for the third game in a row.

It was back in New York that the David-Goliath match was to take place against NBA’s finest players and future teammate, the late Kobe Bryant. In that game, he laid it all on the home court by scoring plus four rebounds, seven assists, and a career-high of 38 points as well as two steals.

6. Brushing off Racist Media Comments

Lin was no stranger to brushing off racist remarks from the media or fans while on the court. He usually let his game speak for itself.  However,r the fame of Linsanity brought up a new level of the remarks with ESPN’s anchor Jorge Andres at one time and many other times after that using the racial slur in the context of Asian players saying, Lin was cooking with some hot.

Even fellow basketball players upon his G league return in 2021, hurled ignorant filled rhetorics calling him Coronavirus simply because of his Taiwanese roots.

7 .  Lin’s Support to the Asian Community

Like Wataru Misaka, Lin has continued to use his voice to shedding light on the rise of hate and violence meted at Asians worldwide. His support has been unwavering even to the point of being detrimental to his career. He says that he has learned to be more unapologetic and real even if he doesn’t get back t playing in the NBA.

8. All good things come to an End

While Lins’s performance helped the Knicks to the eighth position in the Eastern Conference of the 2012 NBA playoffs, he would miss out as he had partially torn his meniscus to the left knee which required surgery when he hurt himself playing against the  Detroit Pistons. As he fought for his last shot in 2021, his age and injuries became barriers to a successful career,

9. Lin’s Impeccable Stats

With over 450 games played in the NBA, Lins’s regular score per game is 2.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists 11.6 points, and 1.1 steals, putting him comfortably ahead of the average point guard in the year of the 2010s, proving that he did belong in the NBA.

10. Let’s Film and Document

While playing against the Washington Wizards, most of the fans were filming the game and everyone wanted to capture the historical moment.
