Lin Chi-ling was born on 29 November 1974 in Taipei, Taiwan. Both of her parents are from Tainan in Southern Taiwan, and they moved to Taipei after their marriage.

Lin attended the University of Toronto in Canada and returned to Taiwan in 1997 after she completed her bachelor’s degree. She tried pursuing a career in fine art but was turned away because she lacked a postgraduate degree in the field.

In 2002, Lin was invited to model in a television advertisement in Hong Kong. The advertisement received attention and discussion on the internet, and interest in Lin began to grow.

Lin’s popularity grew over the years as she began modeling in Hong Kong and doing advertisements in Japan.

1. Lin wanted to Work in the art Field

Following her college graduation, she went back to her home country. She wanted to go into fine art and sought a position at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, but was turned away because she lacked a postgraduate degree in the field.

Lin continued to model part-time before leaving the industry and working as an administrative assistant for the Fubon Cultural and Educational Foundation. In 2000, Lin left Fubon and spent three months studying in Japan, then returned to Taiwan and modeling, with Catwalk Production House.

2. She Fell from the Back of a Horse while Shooting an Advertisement

On 8 August 2005, Lin was in Dalian, China, shooting an advertisement for Procter and Gamble home products when she fell from the back of a horse she was riding and was inadvertently trampled.

Workers rushed Lin to a nearby hospital where doctors discovered that she had suffered six broken ribs, a punctured left lung, and an accumulation of blood in the pleural cavity. 

He underwent four months of treatment and therapy and announced in November 2005 that she had completely recovered.

3. She was Nicknamed “Lin Chi-ling Phenomenon”

Lin’s rise to fame initiated a Taiwanese craze for supermodels, effect commentators named “The Lin Chi-ling Phenomenon”.

One of the unintended results of the Lin Chi-ling phenomenon is that due to his immense popularity among her Chinese fans, some Japanese pornographic actresses resembling Lin have become more famous and more popular among Chinese fans.

The actresses are more popular in China than in their native homeland Japan and have since received nicknames given by their China fans in association with Lin Chi-ling.

4. She Started acting in 2009

Lin has had numerous roles in television over her time as a model, being the host of TVBS-G LA Mode News, the Golden Melody Awards, and the Top Chinese Music Chart Awards in 2005.

Lin starred as one of the three female leads in the 2010 Fuji TV Japanese television drama Tsuki no Koibito. She made her film debut role in a historical epic directed by John Woo entitled Red Cliff. Playing the role of Xiaoqiao, was her first time acting. In 2009, she starred together with Jay Chou in the action-adventure film, The Treasure Hunter.

Lin was in an on-and-off relationship with Taiwanese actor Jerry Yan for many years. Yan admitted to reuniting with Lin on 10 November 2017, but she did not confirm or deny the report.

Around one year later, however, Yan refused to comment and Lin denied dating. On 6 June 2019, Lin announced her marriage to Akira, a member of the famous Japanese pop band Exile. 

Lin announced the birth of her first child, a son, on 31 January 2022 the eve of the Lunar New Year, after undergoing fertility treatments.

6. Lin has Received Numerous Awards

Lin has received several awards over the years as a supermodel.

She received the ”Top Ten China Beauty” award at the 5th International Beauty Week in 2006, and the “Best Fashion Icon” at the 2nd Entertainment Award in Beijing in 2007.

She has also received “Most popular New Actress” at the Baidu Award in 2008, “Best New Actress” at the Sina Award, and the “Best Asia Star Award at the Asia Model Festival awards in Korea in 2009.

7. She does not Age

Lin was born in 1974 but still looks like someone in her 20s. She is certainly in her late 40s but looks a lot younger.

She attributed this to her skincare routines. Hydration is of paramount importance for Lin Chi-ling. As such, she doesn’t hold back on the number of skin care products or steps needed to achieve that.

In fact, she applies her essence and moisturizer twice to ensure that the skin is adequately hydrated. She shocked her fans in 2017 when she revealed her true age.

8. Akira was attracted by Lin’s Generous Nature

Akira wrote that no matter how busy she may be she always puts her family, friends, and fans before herself and constantly strives to provide love and courage to many people across Asia, always staying true to her roots.

He was strongly attracted to her sense of responsibility and caring nature. He also wrote that “With a smile, she always accepts me for who I am, and I constantly feel nothing but appreciation for her kindness. It pushes me to be better and I truly want to make her happy.”

9. Her husband Akira is in one of the biggest Boy Bands in Japan

Lin’s husband is part of the 19-member boy band “Exile” since 2006. The band is well recognized in Japan.

Before that, he made his first debut on the scene in 2004 as part of the group Rather Unique which eventually disbanded.

He has also acted in various movies and dramas and even dabbled in voice acting, having voiced the titular character Mad Max in the Japanese dub of Mad Max: Fury Road.

10. Lin has a Big Heart for Children

Lin is known to have a soft heart for children. She established “The Chi-ling Charity Foundation” in 2011, which helps to build schools and dormitories in rural parts of China, mainly in the Sichuan province.

Chi-ling told CNA in an interview last year that she plans to focus more on her charity work in 2019. She said, “It makes me sad to think that they don’t have a starting point in their lives, a basic education. If we could just enable them to study, maybe one of them will make it out of their hometowns, and that’ll make all the difference”.
