Godfrey Gao was a Taiwanese-Canadian model and actor. He was established as Asia鈥檚 first male supermodel.

As an actor, he was known for his role as Magnus Vane in 2013. A film adaptation of The Mortal Instruments; City of Bones. He also appeared in more than 14 Tv series.

Godfrey Gao was born as Tsao Chih Hsiang in Taipei city on 22nd September 1984. His father was a Taiwanese of Shanghainese descent and he worked as a general manager at Michelin Taiwan.

 His mother was a Malaysian of Peranakan Chinese descent from George town. She was the winner of the Miss Penang beauty pageant in the year 1970.

Godfrey was the Youngest of three boys, his second brother was also a model and an actor. Godfrey’s family later migrated to North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

He studied at Queensbury elementary school and later joined Argyle secondary school and also studied at Capilano University.

1. He was born in Taiwan but Raised in Canada

Godfrey Gao was born in Taipei, Taiwan in the year 1984,22nd September, but his family later migrated from Taiwan to Canada where they were raised together with his brothers.

He studied at Capilano University in North Vancouver and later came back to Taiwan to work as a model in 2004.

2. His Interest in the World of Sports ranged from basketball and volleyball to Taekwando

Gao was good at various sports. When he was at Capilano University (in Canada), his forays into the world of sports ranged from basketball and volleyball to taekwondo.

Moreover, he was talented in playing various musical instruments. Occasionally, he indulged in his love for playing the drums or deejaying.

3. The First Asian Model to be Signed on by Louis Vuitton

Godfrey Gao moved back to Taiwan to work as a model in 2004 where he was managed by Jetstar entertainment.

He then came along with his fellow male models Sphinx Ting, Victor Chen and Tan lan Chun Tien who were nicknamed the Fashion 4.

In 2011, he became the first Asian male model to appear in a campaign for Louis Vuitton. The campaign earned him popularity and a good reputation.

In 2016 he earned the nickname Nations Husband after he starred in a role in the drama, Remembering Lichuan. He acted alongside Jiao Junyan and others. The film was widely acclaimed thus earning him the nickname.

Additionally, Godfrey Gao also played roles in other films such as the film Wedding Bible. He acted in 2015 alongside Korean actress Yoo-in-na.

He was a tall model who rose to stardom when he was cast in the Louis Vuitton spring and summer 2011 campaign. The Guardian dubbed him the world’s first Asian male supermodel. This earned him popularity.

Later, the Sk-11 men tapped him to be their brand ambassador. This earned him the first Asian model to become the face of the French luxury Conglomerate.

In his career, he managed to get many awards as well as popularity. He was awarded the Golden Angel Award back in 2107. He attained it after being the most popular actor. He also got the Jade Pendant the same year.

10. He Collapsed on Stage during a Sports Reality Television Series Broadcast

On 27 November 2019, he collapsed on stage, while filming Chase me. This was a Sports Reality Television series broadcast on Zhejiang Television.

He was rushed to the hospital, where after attempts at resuscitation for nearly three hours Gao was pronounced dead.

His death was announced by his agency Jetstar Entertainment which stated,  鈥淲e are very shocked and saddened and even until now find it impossible to accept the death of Godfrey Gao.鈥�

He had reportedly been filming for 17 hours at the time of his collapse when the producers of Chase Me said in a statement that Gao died from cardiac arrest.

Actor and director Xu Zheng stated that the series producers 鈥渕ust be held responsible鈥� for what he claimed were poor health and safety conditions.

In a statement on Sina Weibo, Zhejiang Television stated that they were deeply regretful and sorry for the irreparable and serious consequences that the incident caused. They were willing to take up responsibility.
