The Hot spring is found in Wulai District, New Taipei, Taiwan.  Every week it produces water which is alkaline and carbonic acid at a temperature of 55 to 80 degrees Celsius.

It also produces mineral water in large quantities which was developed d long time ago. The Name  Wulai comes from the Atayal aborigine word which means the “hot springs.”

 The water in the waterfall is clear, colourless, and odourless, the locals have a myth that says, bathing with the water from the springs keeps the skin moist. The hot spring is the largest free-of-charge hot spring in Taiwan.

It became popular in early spring, this was when the red cherry blossoms filled the mountainsides. The visitors enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the blossom while soaking in the hot springs.

1. Wulai Spring Promotes Way of Life of the Atayal People

The Wulai hot spring is among the most important sites for the people around it. This is because many businesses have survived because of the hot spring and it has become a daily life of Atayal people.

Currently, around the spring there are hostels such as the classy spring hotels, which attract visitors who enjoy the spas in all seasons.

 After visiting the Wulai hot spring, the visitors return to the  Wulai Old Street for dinner, this helps the people to earn a living.

2. The Spring was Discovered by the Atayal Hunting Party

For more than three centuries, the Wulai area was a hunting place for the Atayal aboriginals. During hunting activities the  Atayal hunting party discovered the hot springs, this was after steam was seen rising from the valley.

After the discovery, they called the area Uraikirofu which was an Atayal name for steaming springs, from these original words, the name Wulai was derived.

Currently, Wulai spring is considered one of the best northern Taiwan’s premier hot springs to visit.

3. The Hot Spring is near Wulai Ayatal Museum

Apart from the beautiful scenery and its natural attractions, the Wulai waterfall is near a  museum which is called the Wulai Ayatal Museum and is free to access.

The museum’s main exhibition is about the local Atayal tribe. The museum is managed by volunteers who are passionate and can speak English. The workers explain to the visitors more about Taiwan’s aboriginal culture. Around the springs, some Shops sell local arts and crafts.

4. The Hot Spring has a Cable Car

After walking through the old street of Wulai and the river. The hot spring has a  gondola and a Cable car that takes visitors up the mountains to overlook the town.

The Wulai Hotspring is located near one of the best restaurants known as the Hotspring World Wulai.

The restaurant rooms have a TV, air conditioning and a hot tub, and access to free WiFi. The rooms are also equipped with a refrigerator, and a dining area, they are also equipped with hot showers, a private bathroom that has a bath, and a hairdryer.

The hotel also offers a free shuttle service and a garden. It offers meeting facilities, a shared lounge, a tour desk, and free parking.

During February or March, the hot spring experience the famous spot of cherry blossom viewing. The hot spring is one of the best spots to view this beautiful foliage. However, this beautiful cherry changes depending on the weather every year and other conditions.

When visiting the hot spring it was one of the easiest and cheapest ways is the use the buses. The buses that go to the hot spring are bus 849,  from Xindian Station, south of Taipei. The buses are frequent and they are about fifteen minutes to half an hour and costs NT$15.

In 2015, the area was struck by a strong typhoon. The Typhoon damaged Wulai town and the hot springs. A few years later the Hot spring recovered were most of the places were opened in 2017. The typhoon almost crippled One of the thriving hot spring towns which negatively affected the tourism sector in the country. The hot spring is a source of income for the local businesses and also the people living in this area who depend on tourism.

10. Visitors with Health Issues are not Allowed at the Hot Spring

 Pregnant or people having different health conditions are not advised to enjoy themselves at the Hot Springs. These conditions include high blood pressure and heart issues. People are advised against using the springs for their safety. People also with contagious diseases are not allowed. These diseases include skin rashes and respiratory infections.  please avoid the hot springs if you have these highlighted problems.

The Wulai hot spring is one of the largest tourist attraction sites in Taiwan and the largest source of income for many people with small businesses around the hot spring. Most of the infrastructures in this area have been developed due because of the hot spring. The hot spring has also boosted economic activities in this area such as the growth of the hospitality sector which leads to a high number of tourists visiting the area. The minerals produced by the hot spring have helped a lot due to their medicinal value to the skin. the hot spring has helped in the development of a museum which helps to preserve the culture of the area and also to educate the visitors about the rich history of the hot spring.
