1. Marc Forster Grew Up in Davos, Switzerland

He was born on November 30, 1969, in AU (Illertissen) in the Neu-Ulm district of Bavaria, Germany. His parents, a German doctor and a Swiss architect moved to Switzerland when he was nine years old.

Forster spent his adolescence in Davos, a winter resort in eastern Switzerland. Forster considered his years in Davos as a source of inspiration.

In 2008, Marc Forster received Swiss citizenship. He was also named an Honorary Citizens of Davos.

He attended a renowned international boarding school, Institut Montana Zugerberg, in central Switzerland for his formal education. He was attending Montana together with his brother Peter.

At this boarding school, Forster watched Apocalypse Now at the age of 12. It was a movie that had a lasting impact on him and ultimately made him want to become a director.

At 20, Forster moved to New York in the United States. For the next three years, Forster attended New York University’s film school, making several documentary films.

Forster moved to Hollywood in 1995 and shot low-budget film ($10,000) called Loungers which won the Slamdance Audience Award.

He started his filming career in 1995 by directing an experimental low-budget film called Loungers. Forster’s first feature-length motion picture was the psychological drama Everything Put Together (2000). The film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

Forster is best known for directing the feature films such as The Kite Runner, Monster’s Bell, Christopher Robin and many more. He has also been featured in directing numerous television commercials.

For the James Bond movie, producer Barbara Broccoli wanted no other director but Marc Forster. The Quantum of Solace was loaded with Swissness. Forster was also nominated for many awards and won others.

5. Forster Breakthrough Film Was “Monster’s Ball”

Monster’s Ball (2001) is an American drama film directed by Marc Forster. The film was written by Milo Addica and Will Rokos, who also appeared.

The film starred Halle Berry, Heath Ledger, Billy Bob Thornton, Sean Combs and Peter Boyle. All those featured are great people in the entertainment industry.

The film has directed many of its starring actors into winning awards. Halle Berry was led to winning in her Academy-Award-winning performance as the wife of a man on death row and Best Actress in a Leading Role during Phoenix Film Critics Society Awards.

6. Forster Directed the Famous “The Kite Runner”

Forster directed an adaptation of best-seller Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner. It was scripted by repeat collaborator David Benioff and starred British newcomer Khalid Abdalla.

The Kite Runner follows an Afghani-American man who returns to his war-ravaged country to save the son of his former best friend.

The film was released on December 14, 2007, and grossed $73 million worldwide. The film achieved a nomination for a Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film and a BAFTA bid for Film Not in the English Language.

7. Forster Has Directed Many Films

Since he started his directing career, Forster has directed many famous and award-winning films. He directed Stranger than Fiction (2006), a surreal romantic comedy starring Will Ferrell was a success. The film grossed $54 million.

Subsequently, he directed the film adaptation of the novel World War Z, starring Brad Pitt, which Paramount disclosed at the July 2010 San Diego Comic-Con. The film was the highest-grossing film of Brad Pitt’s career and is the most successful Zombie movie of all time.

In October 2020, Mattel disclosed that Forster would be directing and producing an animated/ live-action Thomas & Friends film established on the franchise of the same name. To date, he continues to direct films.

8. Marc Forster Once Turned Down a Half Million Dollar Offer

According to M16-HQ.com, Marc Forster once rejected a $500,000 offer to direct a film regardless of having no income at the time and living from money borrowed from friends.

It was a surprise for a young director in expensive Hollywood. Rejecting that much cash would take quite a conviction.

However, it may have eventually assisted Forster’s career as a director as “he didn’t believe the script was good and was afraid his reputation would suffer”.

Forster also turned down another gig. He turned down directing the third Harry Potter movie. “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”.

9. There is a “Marc Forster Suite” at Hotel MATTHIOL in Zermatt

After Forster’s directing career reached its peak and he attained a lot of success, he decided to venture into business. In 2010 he went into the hotel business.
