La Rambertia Alpine Garden is an alpine plant garden in the Vaud Prealps in Switzerland. The garden is located at an altitude of 1980 m above Montreux on the southeast ridge of the Rochers-de-Naye.

La Rambertia Alpine Garden is maintained by private organisations. The organisation is established as Société de la Rambertia.

Plants in the L Rambertia Alpine Garden come mainly from Switzerland and the entire Alpine region. Additionally, the plants also come from Alpine zones in other mountainous regions.

La Rambertia keeps in contact with about a hundred other botanical and alpine gardens. It particularly maintains the exchange of seeds.

La Rambertia Alpine Garden is easily accessible from the terminus of the Montreux-Les Rochers-de-Naye rack railway. This is via a 400m long and easily walkable path.

The regional hiking trail from the Rochers de Naye to the Col de Chaude and Rossinière has been crossing the Alpine Garden since 2016. The trail also forms a section of the Via Alpina national long-distance hiking trail.

The Rambertia garden is open from June to mid-October. This only if the snow melt allows it. Its entrance is free once you have reached Rochers-de-Naye by train.

1. The Garden was Named after the 19th Century Swiss Author

La Rambertia Alpine Garden was named after Eugene Rambert. He was a 19th-century Swiss author.

In 1875, Rambert published a five-volume description of the Swiss Alps and, in 1885, a book about the local bird life. And in memory of the naturalist and alpinist, la Rambertia Alpine Garden was named after him.

La Rambertia Alpine Garden is maintained by private organisations. The organisation is established as Société de la Rambertia.

2. The Approximately Five Hectare area is at an Average Altitude of 1980 m above Sea Level

 La Rambertia Alpine Garden occupies an approximately five-hectare area. The garden is located at an altitude of 1980 m above sea level.

 It is half a kilometre east of the summit of Rochers de Naye. Three hundred meters from the top station of the Rochers-de-Naye cable car.

3. The Garden was Taken Over by a Swiss Botanist From Two Russian Botanists

There were two attempts to create an Alpine garden by Two Russian Botanists. Seluchin in 1892 near the Jaman lake and Janczewski in 1894 on the northern slope of the Rochers-de-Naye.

However, the projects were Abandoned for various reasons. In 1896, the Geneva botanist Henry Corrévon took over and created the present garden.

A small Buddhist stands majestically along the path to La Rambertia Alpine Garden. The Stupa was created in 1966 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of La Rambertia Alpine Garden.

Additionally, A small wooden house and a signboard mark the entrance to the alpine garden.

5. La Rambertia Alpine Garden has a Collection of 1000 Alpine Plants

La Rambertia Alpine Garden has a collection of nearly 100 alpine plants. The plants are from Europe, the Himalayas and Asia. The garden also hosts various species of Leontopodium “Edelweiss” alpinum flowers.

Entering the garden is the rocky landscape studded with some wonderful alpine flowers. In 1996, the Rambertia Society established an area for plants from the Himalayas. Specifically from Tibet in the western part of the area, it cultivates.

The mission of the la Rambertia Alpine Garden is to protect all the plant species of the region. Moreover, the garden also protects plants that have been imported by man to enrich the garden.

For more than 120 years, the Rambertia has been fulfilling its mission uninterruptedly. However, taking care of the plants at this altitude is a constant challenge. This is especially with the arrival of the first snowfalls.

7. An Irregular Network of Paths Runs Between the Stone Borders

The network of paths gives gardeners, researchers and visitors access to the plantings in the La Rambertia Alpine Garden. The plant locations and many individual species are marked with multilingual labels during the growing season.

The plant varieties are well maintained and cultivated without lime substrate. For the cultivations, earth from acidic soils was brought in at individual points.

8. Enjoy the Superb View of the Mountain Ranges

At the end of the garden, there is a superb view of the mountain ranges and lake Hongrim. Behind the lake is the Chateau d’oex, thus can be seen if the weather is good.

9. A Train is Available for Tourists to Visit the Garden

Visitors can take the train from Glion. This is a lovely village above Montreux where the train line Glion – Rochers de Naye was first opened in 1892.

The train ride is a picturesque journey with stunning views over lake Geneva. The train passes through forested slopes and green meadows.

In 2004, the Rambertia and the Rochers de Naye railway company signed a new collaboration agreement. In 2016, the association agreed with the landowner on the right to use the Alpine Garden area for the next hundred years.

10. It Maintains the Exchange of Plant Seeds with Botanical Institutions

La Rambertia keeps in contact with about a hundred other botanical and alpine gardens. It particularly maintains the exchange of seeds.

La Rambertia garden is a member of the following associations. These institutions are, Botanic Gardens Conservation International, Hortus Botanicus Helveticus (association of Swiss botanical gardens and collections), Botanical Gardens of France and French Speaking Countries and International Plant Exchange Network.

Visitors can also joy a hike while visiting the garden. The regional hiking trail from the Rochers de Naye to the Col de Chaude and Rossinière has been crossing the Alpine Garden since 2016.
