Haus Zum Ritter can be traced back to the early 14th century. In the year 1566, the knight Hans von Waldkirch added two storeys to the house from whom the name of the house is derived according to tradition.

However, the original fresco paintings were attached by Tobias Stimmer from 1568 to 1570.

Overpainting in oil and further renovations took place from 1665 to 1919 and during the last renovation by August Schmidt and Christian Schmidt the original paintings by Voucher were exposed again.

The paintings are considered the most important Renaissance frescoes north of the Alps. Interestingly today’s paintings were recreated by Carl Roesch from 1938 to 1939 and 1943 based on the originals.

1. The Name of the House was Derived from Knight Hans von Waldkirch

Waldkirch is the name of a noble family from 1790 imperial counts originating from an old family of citizens of the city of Schaffhausen Switzerland.

However, the Waldkirch was a councilor family of the city of Schaffhausen and in the sources of the 14th century, they only appear under their job title goldsmith.

Furthermore, Heinrich Goldschmid called Waldkirch who appears in a document in 1405 is considered to be the ancestor.

2. The House Name can be traced back to the Early 14th Century

The house’s name can be traced back to the early 14th century.

In 1566 the knight Hans von Waldkirch added two storeys to the house from whom the name of the house is derived according to tradition.

3. The Alliance Coat of Arms of the Waldkirch family is Depicted at Haus Zum Ritter

Haus Zum Ritter has important late Renaissance façade paintings depicting the alliance coat of arms of Christoph von Waldkirch and Ursula May.

Furthermore, Christoph von Waldkirch had come to the possession of his court ruler Marthalen through his father-in-law Benedict may von Rued.

And as a result, since 1561 it belonged to the Waldkirch von Schaffhausen family who held jurisdiction until 1780.

4. The Original Fresco Paintings were made by Tobias Stimmer

The original fresco painting was made by Tobias Stimmer between 1568 and 1570. However, overpainting in oil and further renovations took place in 1665, 1769, 1835, 1870, and 1918\1919.

During this last renovation by August Schmid and Christian Schmid, the original paintings of Stimmer were uncovered again.

Furthermore, these paintings are considered the most important Renaissance frescoes north of the Alps.

5. The Paintings were Removed and Conserved in 1935

In 1935 the paintings were removed and conserved however their preservation was only possible through replacement.

Which was carried out by specialist Franco Steffanoni. Furthermore, the removal or detachment of wall paintings is a restoration technique in which a wall painting is removed from its architectural context in order to secure and preserve it on the spot by transferring it to a new image carrier in the event of endangerment or damage.

6. On the Paintings, you can See Personifications of Two scenes from Homer’s Odyssey

On the paintings, you can see personifications of two scenes from Homer’s Odyssey. On the left of the painting, Odysseus arrives at the sorceress Circe who turned his companions into pigs.

On the right, you can see the tree of lotus from which Odysseus’ companions eat however the tree has the shape of a woman.

7. The Paintings That were Conserved in 1935 have Been Exhibited in the Museum of All Saints

The city of Schaffhausen built the Museum of All Saints on the site of the former monastery between 1921 and 1938.

The museum is built to provide a place for storage and preservation of the large art and cultural history collections that associations and private individuals had collected over the decades.

However, the museum features exhibitions on archeology, history, art, and natural history and this is the place where the original paintings are being exhibited.

8. Today’s Paintings were Recreated by Carl Roesch from 1938 to 1939 and in 1943

Carl Roesch was a Swiss artist who used various techniques in his work and so far, 93 oil paintings, around 200 watercolors, 150 pastels, etchings, and 1000 drawings have been recorded from his life work.

Figure compositions and landscape painting characterize his work but as he got older he increasingly turned to the abstract and color.

However, he reconstructed the frescoes by Tobias Stimmer on the Haus Zum Ritter which earned him great recognition.

9. The Paintings show Different Personifications

The paintings show different personifications like the virtus above the tag “Zum Ritter” with the king for the state and the woman with miter for the church.

Furthermore, these three people look to the right to the Gloria with a scepter and a globe at their feet. On the far right is the immortal.

More so above these figures, you can see the coats of arms of the owners as well as a triumphal procession to the left and right of them.
