Lucien Favre is a Swiss professional football manager and former player who currently manages Ligue 1 club Olympique Gymnaste Club Nice Cote d’Azur.

However, Lucien was a playmaker for various Swiss and French clubs the longest for Servette with whom he also won the championship.

Moreover, as a manager, he won the Swiss championship with Zurich and Servette and also the Swiss Cup.

Furthermore, in Germany Lucien also managed Hertha BSC and Borussia Monchengladbach.

1. Lucien Favre played for Lausanne-Sports, Neuchatel Xamax, Toulouse and Servette

At the club level, Lucien played for Lausanne- Sports, Neuchatel Xamax, Toulouse, and Servette earning a reputation as a skillful and intelligent playmaker.

Moreover, when Pierre Albert Chapuisat destroyed his knee in 1985 Lucien could not play for eight months.

Interestingly it’s still considered one of the worst fouls in Swiss footballing history. And in 1991 Lucien announced his retirement.

2. He started a Coaching career in 1991

Lucien’s coaching career started in 1991 as the under 14 assistant managers with Echallens.

However, the following year he took over the under 17 teams before being appointed manager of the first team in 1993.

Moreover, under his leadership, Lucien’s young squad surprisingly earned a promotion to the Nationalliga B.

The promotion is still the most outstanding achievement in the club’s history.

Furthermore, after four years with Echallens Lucien was named Academy Manager of Neuchatel Xamax. The move allowed him to experience the overall operation of a professional club.

Lucien is married and the father of two children however he met his wife Chantal at a Chilbi when he was a teenager.

His son Loc like his father was a football player who trained with him at Yverdon-Sport FC.

Moreover, when he was a player and coach in Switzerland he earned the nickname “Lulu”.

Interestingly Lucien won his 150th game as a coach of a Bundesliga team on October 24th, 2020 when Dortmund defeated FC Schalke 04.

4. He has a Total of 24 Caps for the Swiss National Team

Lucien has a total of 24 caps for the Swiss national team.

However, he scored his first and only international goal in his debut against the Netherlands in Zurich on September 1 1981 in the same game in which both Rudd Gullit and Frank Rijkaard made their debuts for their respective countries.

Furthermore, on April 26th, 1989 Lucien got his last cap for Switzerland against Portugal in a 3-1 away defeat in Lisbon.  

5. Lucien Favre was named Manager of Yverdon Sport

Lucien was named manager of Yverdon Sport in January 1997 while the team was languishing at the bottom of the Nationalliga B.

However, he led his team to the Nationalliga A title in 1999. The next season they finished fifth in the standings which remain Yverdon’s highest result in the top division to date.

6. He was named Manager of Zurich

Lucien Favre was named manager of Zurich in 2003 and his debut game in charge of Zurich ended in a 2-1 defeat against Basel.

However, in the 2003-04 season, Zurich finished fifth once place behind a UEFA Cup slot for the 2004-05 season and lost 6-5 to Grasshoppers in the Swiss Cup semifinals.

In 205 he defeated Luzern in the Swiss Cup final and during the next season, Zurich won the Swiss Super League after a thrilling final day victory against Basel ending a 25-year drought for a league championship.

Moreover, in the 2006-07 season, Zurich was eliminated in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.

Interestingly he was named Swiss Manager of the year for the second year in a row on May 29th, 2007 after earning another Swiss championship.

7. Lucien Favre agreed to a Three-Year Contract as Head Coach for Hertha BSC

On June 1st, 2007 Hertha BSC a German Bundesliga team announced that Lucien had agreed to a three-year contract as its head coach.

In the first year of the DFB-Pokal, he defeated SpVgg Unterhaching 3-0 to kick off the 2007-08 season.

However, he led Hertha to a superb fourth-place finish in the 2008-09 Bundesliga season despite having just the 13th largest budget in the league. Hertha Berlin completed in the UEFA Cup but they were knocked out in the group round.

Furthermore, three of the club’s finest players Josip Imuni, Andriy Voronin, and Marko Panteli all defeated in the summer.

Hertha was struggling in the league at the end of September 2009 and Lucien was stripped of his responsibilities by the club.

In addition, Lucien’s game ended in a 5-1 defeat against 1899 Hoffenheim and his final record was 40 wins, 20 ties, and 34 defeats.  

8. He was Announced as Borussia Monchengladbach’s next Head Coach succeeding Michael Frontzeck

On February 14th, 2011 Lucien was announced as Borussia Monchengladbach’s next head coach succeeding Michael Frontzeck.

However, he took over when the squad was in the last place in the league with just 16 points after 22 games and seven points short of Bundesliga Safety.

Moreover, he improved the club’s fortunes, and while continuing to struggle they were able to secure their spot in the Bundesliga with a narrow victory against VfL Bochum in a two-legged relegation play-off.

The squad exceeded all expectations the next season finishing fourth and qualifying for the early rounds of the 2012-13 UEFA Champions League.

The most successful season to date was the 2014-15 Bundesliga season when Gladbach finished for the 2015-16 UEFA Champions League group stage.

9. Lucien Favre was named Manager of Borussia Dortmund

On May 22nd, 2018 Lucien was named manager of Borussia Dortmund with a deal that runs until June 30th, 2020.

However, in his first season with the club, he became the first manager in Bundesliga history to go undefeated in his first 15 games.

These victories include a 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig, and a 7-0 victory over 1. FC Nurnberg, and a 4-0 victory against Atletico Madrid.

Furthermore, Dortmund won the German Super Cup on August 3rd, 2019.

Moreover, after a spate of dismal results including a 5-1 thrashing at home against newly promoted VfB Stuttgart he was fired on December 13th, 2020. Lucien concluded with a 67 win, 17 draws, and 23 loss records.
