Stechelberg is a small village in Switzerland located at the base of the Schwarzmonch mountain in the Bernese Alps. It forms part of the district of Lauteebrunnen.

The name of the village, Stachelbarg was first recorded in 1749 to describe the part of this valley. This area was previously associated with iron ore mining which led to deforestation.

After the deforestation which was widely condemned, reforestation programmes have largely restored the area surrounding the village. This area has been declared a protected natural place.

Stechelberg is connected by the Luftseilbahn Stechelberg-Murren-Schilthorn (LSMS). This is an aerial tramway that was constructed in 1965 for other amenities and locations in the area.

The small village had a population of two hundred and fifty-five inhabitants as of 2009. In February 2003, two avalanches struck the village but no significant damage was caused.

Stechelberg village can be accessed by Lauteebrunnen from the terminal station. People can also get to the small village by a small road that leads up the valley from Lauteebrunnen. Another way of getting to the village is by hiking over the difficult terrain.

1. The Village is Located at the Entrance of a Valley

The beautiful village of Stechelberg is not only located in this amazing Lauteebrunnen valley. It is also located at the base of the Schwarzmonch mountain in the Bernese Alps.

The Schwarzmonch which means black monk in German is a mountain in the Bernese Alps. It is two thousand six hundred and forty-nine metres high. The mountain overlooks Lauteebrunnen in the Bernese Oberland.

Schwarzmonch forms a huge buttress on the northwest side of the Jungfrau to which it is connected by the ridge that is named Ufem Schwarzen Grat.

3. Iron Ore Mining Led to Deforestation which was Curbed by Reforestation Programmes

Stechelberg village was first recorded in 1749 describing part of this wonderful valley. This area was once associated with iron ore mining which left the area explored more.

The mining of iron ore led to widespread deforestation. Since the early iron ore mining and deforestation, reforestation programmes were started.

The reforestation programmes aimed to largely restore the area around the village. This led to the area being declared a protected natural zone known as Naturschutzgebiet.

Tourists and other visitors to the village might think that the village cannot be connected with other amenities or locations around it. However, it is easier to connect the village to other areas.

Through the Luftseilbahn Stechelberg-Murren-Schilthorn (LSMS), people can connect to other amenities and other locations in the area. LSMS is an aerial tramway which was constructed in 1965 to connect the village of Stechelberg with other areas.

5. Stechelberg Village can be Accessed through Several Means

The village is located away from the main centres of Switzerland but it is still accessible through several means. It might not be so easy to get to the small village in some ways.

However, there is the terminal train station from Lauteebrunnen. Stechelberg village can also be accessed by a small road that leads up to the valley from Lauteebrunnen.

There are numerous holiday apartments, a winter campsite and group accommodation far from the crowds offer an ideal base for the winter. Winter sports regions of Mürren-Schilthorn and Kleine Scheidegg-Männlichen are accessible from here.

Winter activities like ice skating, parachuting and others can be experienced here in the village. Tourists can also relax and enjoy the refreshing mountain air during winter.

7. Glacial Waterfall during Summer can be Experienced in the Village

Stechelberg village has multiple serene environments and nature which attracts several tourists. One of them is the glacial waterfall.

The serene environment of Stechelberg has a well-signed UNESCO trail which leads into one of the largest nature reserves in Switzerland. This area is captivating with its isolation and the wilderness of the Alpine landscape.

This region is surrounded by a panorama of peaks of 3000 and 4000 metres. This trail leads to an opportunity to experience nature up close. The trail also leads to the three isolated candle hotels accessible on foot.

9. Two Special Events usually take place at the Village

Stechelberg village has two special events for the locals and tourists who come to the area. There is the Mountain church service event and cheese festival.

The mountain church service event usually takes place on Männlichen with Pastor Klaus-Dieter Hägele. During this event, people enjoy the beautiful mountain world, take time to reflect and enjoy folk music.

The other event is for all cheese and alp lovers. This event came into being more than twenty years ago and was brought up by local chefs. At this event, farmers share the produced alp cheese of the summer. Games, competitions, musical entertainment and plenty of food and drinks are shared.

Stechelberg village is not one of the most populated areas located on this side of Switzerland. This might be because of several reasons among them being fears of other avalanches.

By 2009, Stechelberg had a population of two hundred and fifty-five people. However, the population might have risen by now.
