It is a novel about the events in the life of a 5-year-old girl in her paternal grandfather’s care in the Swiss Alps. It was written as a book for children and those who love children as quoted from its subtitle.

In the novel, Heidi is an orphaned girl initially raised by her maternal grandmother and aunt Dete in Maienfeld, in the Grisons, after the early deaths of her parents, Tobias and Adelheid who are Dete’s brother-in-law and sister. 

Heidi is one of the best-selling books ever written and is among the best-known works of Swiss literature.

6. Visit The Vaduz Castle

Vaduz Castle is the palace and official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein. The castle gave its name to the town of Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, which overlooks an adjacent hilltop.

The tower stands on a piece of ground that is 12 by 13 meters in area. On the ground floor, the tower walls have a thickness of up to 4 meters. The original entrance lay on the courtyard side at a height of 11 meters.

The chapel of St. Anna was presumably built in the Middle Ages as well. The main altar is late-gothic. In the Swabian War of 1499, the castle was burned by the Swiss Confederacy. 

7. Hike along the Pizol

It has been a Swiss hiking classic. The 5-lake hike along the Pizol has inspired generations. With views as far as Lake Constance and numerous mountains, the Pizol is also a popular destination for summer excursions.

The main features are 5 crystal-clear mountain lakes and views over the UNESCO site of Sardona. Five modern gondola lifts and chairlifts transport summer guests “as if they are flying” through the beautiful and eventful Pizol region.

The natural scenery of the holiday region Heidiland has inspired author Johanna Spyri to write her world bestseller “Heidi”. After numerous stays in the neighboring health resort of Bad Ragaz, she settled her famous story of the Swiss girl from the mountains in Maienfeld. 

You can still experience the Heidi myth in Maienfeld today. For example the Original Heidi Village, which attracts around 150,000 visitors a year and is constantly expanding its range

The peaceful hamlet is home to the original Heidi house, the house with the same furnishings as in Heidi’s time, Heidi’s alpine hut, a replica of the loving home of Alpöhi, the exhibition Johanna Spyri’s Heidiwelt as well as Heidi’s village school from 1880.

9. Explore the Springs of Tamina Gorge

The spring waters which feed the spas of Bad Ragaz can be traced to the Tamina Gorge. A few meters away from the old bathhouse at Pfäfers is the entrance to the mystical gorge. 

Here, visitors can experience the immense power of the water at a very close range. The 450m path leads through a tunnel into the mountain, past thermal water fountains right into the spring water grotto. 

The nearby monastery church was built at the end of the 17th century and features paintings by the Ticino artist, Giorgoli. One of the oldest playable organs in Switzerland, built by Mathäus Abbrederis, dating back to 1694, stands in the chancel.
