Imagine how long it would take ice to carve a 300m deep gorge in rock. It’s truly unfathomable, but an incredible sight to behold. This is an absolutely remarkable natural feat.

A wooden walkway now leads 1km into the gorge, where you can explore the unique rock formations and tunnels. Along the way, there will be information points where you can learn about the Glacier Canyon’s rich heritage.

This is an excellent all-weather adventure for people of all ages. It’s easy to get to and can be incorporated into most of your day trips in the area.

1. What to expect when visiting the incredible Glacier Canyon – Gletscherschlucht

The Lower Grindelwald Glacier gorge is a breath taking natural masterpiece. The gorge was once covered by glacial ice, and its 300-meter rock walls bear witness to the glacier’s extraordinary power.

A breath taking walkway leads deep into the gorge, past moulins, glacial polish, and pink and green marble blocks. The tour takes you through rock galleries and many tunnels, offering a one-of-a-kind feel.

Listen to the roar of the water cascading down the Lütschine, feel the chill of the wind, and marvel at how the light changes in the gorge. You’ll learn fascinating and sometimes surprising facts about geology, glaciers, water, and mysticism along the way.

The 170 m2 “spider’s web” net is a real highlight. The walkable net that spans the gorge provides a great point of view. Feel the exhilaration of balancing on the net.

You must pay a fee to enter the gorge and walk on the elevated walkway that extends approximately 870 meters into the gorge. You return in the same manner. Strollers and wheelchairs are permitted on the walkway, but some sections are very narrow, so keep other guests in mind.

Hiking near the gorge: The gorge is close to the Pfingstegg cable car, which takes you up to 1386m and offers fantastic views, a summer toboggan, a restaurant, and an optional hike down to the Grindelwald Glacier Gorge.

3. Maintaining access to the Glacier Canyon is done often

Access to the Glacier Canyon must be maintained on an ongoing basis. Without these financings, it would be impossible to enter the canyon safely.

– Every Spring, we invest CHF 65’000 to clear the canyon walls of loose rocks. Local mountain guides suspended from ropes high above the canyon walls inspect each square meter. The entire procedure takes a couple of weeks.

– We invest another CHF 40’000 each year to improve the walkway.

4. Tips and tricks on how to have an enjoyable experience 

The canyon hike is 1km long from beginning to end, be ready to bring some water with you. Furthermore, bring a heavy coat as the temperature outside is around 10°C (50°F). At the entrance, there is free parking for cars and buses, which makes it a lot easier for tourists to leave at their own accordance. This adventure is an excellent complement to check out the Jungfraujoch and discover more of Switzerland during your trip.

5. The amazing Grindelwald Gorge impression on tourists

The path is simple and appropriate for small children. Although the railway along the path is relatively safe, you will still be anxious. Stay on top of small and/or misbehaving children to ensure they do not climb on the railway. There are some gentle waterfalls about halfway down the ravine. They were fascinating, sprinkling down on us like a mist shower. With the sun glinting off all the tiny drops, it was quite special. 

6. Hours of Operation in the amazing Grindelwald Gorge (From May to October)

*On Fridays, the Glacier Canyon is open until 10 p.m. and provides some other attribute to the experience with coloured lights all across the canyon.

7. How to get there via Interlaken, Switzerland (25 minutes)

Follow the Interlaken-Grindelwald directions. Take the first exit from the roundabout at Rothenegg Garage, just before arriving in the village, and follow Grundstrasse towards Grindelwald Grund. Drive up the valley from Grindelwald Grund along the Grundstrasse. After 500 meters, cross the river on Wärgistalstrasse and turn left onto D’Linia. Continue on the road until you reach Glacier Canyon. 

8. How to get there via Grindelwald (5 mins)

Drive up Dorfstrasse towards Grosse Scheidegg, past the Firstbahn, until you reach the church on the right. Just after the church, take the first right down Ribygässli and follow the signs for “Gletscherschlucht” for about 1 km.

9. A magnificent natural work of art

The lower Grindelwald glacier sculpted its way through the rock in this area to form the Glacier Canyon. Unfortunately, the lower glacier is no longer present, however, the canyon is now flourishing as a famous tourist attraction site for a particular sensory walk through its exposed rock galleries and tunnels.

The rushing water cascades freely from the mountains into the Lütschine River below, causing a sudden rush of wind through the canyon and a rapid temperature change as light rays reflect off the steep walls.

Swing at 120km/h with a free fall of 50 meters. Face your fears and plunge into the 90-meter-deep Grindelwald Glacier Gorge! A rope stops your free fall just above the river and swings you through the gorge in a pendulum motion so many times. Booking ahead of time is crucial.

Due to its ease of access in all types of weather, it is also a quick and easy stop for short tour activities. The 170 m2 SPIDERWEB that spans the canyon, offering tourists with a captivating net platform to scramble, walk, or crawl on, seven meters above the roaring Lütschine River, is one of the destination’s best moments.
