7132 Thermal Baths which was formerly known as Therme Vals is a hotel and spa complex in Vals.

The hotel was built over the only thermal springs in the Graubumden canton in Switzerland.

The hotel was completed in 1996 and the spa was designed by Peter Zumthor. The hotel has two restaurants the Red restaurant and the Michelin restaurant Silver.

1. The Hotel is Located in a Fairly Remote Swiss Village called Vals

2. The Hotel Staff can Help You in Planning Daytime Activities

The hotel staff can help you in planning daytime activities.

You can walk the three mountain lakes and with the help of the staff, they can arrange a shuttle to take you to the trailhead.

You can also rent electric bikes from the hotel which can offer assistance in climbing the hills around Vals.

3. The Hotel and Spa were Previously Owned by the Vals Community

In 2012 the hotel and spa were previously owned by the Vals community and were sold to an investor Remo Stoffel for CHF 7.8 million.

However, Stoffel renamed the thermal site 7132 Therme and Hotel. More so Stoffel turned the spa into a luxury resort and made it access exclusive to the clients of his next-door hotel.

4. Peter Zumthor was selected as the Architect for the Spa

Peter Zumthor was selected as the architect for the spa and the concept of the building is based on an architectural interpretation of a stone quarry.

The very characteristic of the movement in the building is a constant change between the very small intimate spaces and large meandering baths.

5. The Hotel was Built using Locally Quarried Valser Quartzite Slabs

The hotel was built using locally quarried Valser quartzite slabs and the spa building is made up of 15 different table-like units which are 5 meters in height with cantilevered concrete roof units supported by tie beams.

This unit fit together like a giant jigsaw puzzle however the nature of the construction is revealed through close inspection of the roof and the roofs of the units don’t join with the 8cm gaps covered by glass to prevent water ingress.

More so the concrete makes the roof appear heavy but the gaps between the units also make the roof appear to float.

6. The Baths were Designed to Look as if they Pre-date the Hotel Complex

The baths were designed to look as if they pre-date the hotel complex as if they were a form of cave or a quarry-like structure.

However, this is particularly evident from observing the grass roof structure of the baths which resemble the foundations of an archaeological site and reveal the form of the various bath rooms which lie below half buried into the hillside.

7. There are 60,000 One-Meter-Long Sections of Stone Forming the Cladding Walls

There are 60,00 one-meter-long sections of stone forming the cladding walls and they appear random like an ashlar wall but there is a regular order.

Furthermore, the cladding stones are of three different heights but the total of the three is always 15cm.

And by this, it allows for variety in arrangement, whilst facilitating construction.

8. The hotel has been featured in New York Times Magazine

The New York Times Magazine featured Vals Therme in their special edition of the 25 most significant post-war architecture designs.

As the architect designs, Peter Zumthor drew inspiration from the region’s Traditional stone roofs, quarries, dams, and bridges.

9. The Hotel had different Designers

The hotel had different designers whereby in the year 2016 Thom Mayne redesigned the hotel’s entrance and Kengo Kuma designed the top floor suites whereas Tadao Ando also worked on the project.  

10. In 1960 a German Property Developer Built a Hotel Complex to take advantage of the Naturally occurring Thermal Springs

In 1960 German developer Karl Kurt Vorlop built a hotel complex with over 1000 beds to take over the thermal springs and the source which provides the water for Valser mineral water sold in Switzerland.

However, after the developer went bankrupt the village of Vals bought the five hotels in development in the year 1983 and commissioned a hydrotherapy Centre in the middle of the five hotels on the source of thermal springs.
