The upper Grindelwald Glacier is one of the two valley glaciers near Grindelwald on the northern side of the Bernese Alps in the Canton of Berne.

However, in 1973 it had a length of about 6.6 km and covered an area of 9.2km2.

The upper Grindelwald arises from a vast snowfield north of Schreckhorn and south of Wetterhorn.

Interestingly the glacier tongue is currently at around 1,400 meters above sea level making it one of the lowest glaciers in the Alps.

1. The Upper Grindelwald Glacier is known as the “Blue Ice Cave

The upper Glacier is also known as the “Blue Ice Cave” simply because of the blue ice in the river.

However, the Glacier is crystal clear and it is slowly melting.

 Furthermore, nearby there are 890 log steps leading to an observation deck where the view is excellent and the scenery is beautiful and even the crisscrossing texture of the glacier is clearly visible.

2. It Is About 6.6 Kilometers Long and Covers 9.6 Square Kilometers

The Upper Grindelwald Glacier covers an area of about 9.6 square kilometers of glaciers near Griendwald on the northern side of the Bernese Alps in the Canton of Berne.

The glacier covers an area measuring 9.6 square kilometers and its length is about 6.6 kilometers as per measurements taken in 1973. 

The other glacier is Lower  Grindelwald  Glacier.

The glacier arises from a vast snow field which is located north of the Schreckhorn and south of Wetterhorn which are the sum of highest peaks at 4,078 meters and 3,692 meters above sea level.

The glacier tongue is currently at around 1,400 meters above sea level making the Upper Grindelwald Glacier one of the lowest glaciers in the Alps which I quite amazing.

The mountain is located between the northern canton of Bern and the southern canton of Valais, halfway between Interlaken and Fiesch at 4,158 meters above sea level.

The Jungfrau forms a massive wall of mountains overlooking the Bernese Oberland and the Swiss Plateau.

 The Grosse Scheidegg is a mountain pass in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland which crosses the col between the Schwarzhorn and the Wetterhorn mountains. The pass is located at 1,962 meters above sea level.

The Grosse Scheidegg is located about 5 kilometers from the Upper Grindelwald Glacier and such can tour the pass when they visit the glacier.

There is a PostBus Switzerland service from Grindelwald village to the summit of the pass.

The pass is best known as the place of the last fight between Holmes and Moriarty and is a popular hiking site.

10. Visitors to The Glacier Can Tour the Wetterhorn And The Kleines Schreckhorn

Tourists visiting the Upper Grindelwald glacier can visit the Wetterhorn and the Kleines Schreckhorn which are major tourist attractions.

The Wetterhorn is a peak in the Swiss Alps towering above the village of Grindelwald. Wetterhorn is situated 3 km north of Upper Grindelwald Glacier.

Tourists to the glacier can take pictures of the peak at the observation deck.  The scenery of the peak from the observation deck is simply exhilarating, to say the least.  Tourists can take pictures from the observation deck.

The Kleines Schreckhorn is a mountain of the Bernese Alps, located south of Grindelwald in the Bernese Oberland. Kleines Schreckhorn is situated 2 km southwest of Upper Grindelwald Glacier

The mountain lies between the valleys of the lower Grindelwald glacier and Upper Grindelwald Glacier, north of the Schreckhorn, and gives a view that is simply mesmerizing for tourists.
