1. Malmöhus belonged to Denmark until 1658, when it became Swedish

Malmöhus as a city was first mentioned in writing in 1275. It is believed to have been founded shortly before that date as a fortified quay or ferry berth of the Archbishop of Lund, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) to the north-east. For centuries, Malmö was Denmark’s second-largest city. Its original name was Malmhaug (various spellings), which means “Gravel pile” or “Ore Hill.” Malmö grew to be one of Denmark’s largest and most visited cities in the 15th century, with a population of around 5,000 people.

2. It was inaugurated in 1275 and was granted its coat of arms in 1437

The Danish King Eric of Pommerania officially granted the arms on April 23, 1437, and again in 1974. Malmöhus’ oldest seal dates from 1421, but it is likely to be (much) older. It depicts a church with a star and crescent (eternity symbols) and waves at the base (for the sea). The church most likely represents the dominant church at the time. A second city seal, probably from the 13th century, is only known from 1417. It depicts a cog ship, indicating the significance of trade.

The seal with the ship also bears the city’s oldest name, “Sigillum der stad Ellenbogen,” whereas the other seal bears the words “S(igillum) Villanorum de Malmghae,” indicating that the seal with the ship is the city’s oldest seal. The city has been using both seals for centuries. The city has been using both seals for centuries. The city’s oldest seal is depicted with a ship. The city has been using both seals for centuries.

Malmö is Sweden’s third-largest city, after Stockholm and Gothenburg, and the sixth-largest city in the Nordic region. It has a population of around 350,000 people. Malmö, originally a harbor city heavily focused on industry, reinvented itself following rapid economic decline beginning in the 1970s. It is now known as a knowledge center, with a university that has 26,000 students and was founded in 1998.

4. Malmöhus has Europe’s longest rail bridge

A 15-minute drive from Malmö’s city center is the magnificent Oresund Bridge (resundsbroen). Decades in the making and internationally famous since its opening in 1999, this spectacular bridge has gained even more fame as the central focus of the smash hit Danish/Swedish TV drama The Bridge. Those who have seen the series will recognize the magnificent structure that now connects Sweden to Denmark, and thus the entire European continent.

5. The tallest building in Sweden, Turning Torso, is located in Malmöhus

The bridge has three functions: a road, a railway, and a tunnel. The first stretch is about eight kilometers long and leads to the man-made island of Peberholm. It then connects to a four-kilometer tunnel built so as not to interfere with incoming flights to Copenhagen Airport. Take a trip across the bridge and through the tunnel to Sweden’s neighbor, Denmark, if you get the chance. After all, no day or hour in Copenhagen is ever wasted.

The most talked about building in southern Sweden is located about 2.7 kilometers from Malmö Central Station and is easily accessible by bus or car. The Turning Torso is the world’s first “twisted skyscraper” and the tallest building in Scandinavia, standing 190 meters tall and combining residential, office, and conference space.

The skyscraper is based on a sculpture called the “Twisting Torso” by designer, artist, and architect Santiago Calatrava, which was featured in the competition brochure for the design and construction of the Oresund Bridge. It took four years to complete the cutting-edge structure. It was built in 2005 and is powered by renewable energy produced locally.

This eye-catching and iconic structure has firmly established Malmö on the architectural map.

6. Malmöhus has Sweden’s largest Middle Eastern community

There are approximately 100,000 Muslims in the area. The Islamic Center manages the Malmö Mosque, which was founded in 1984. The Mahmood Mosque, which opened in 2016, serves the Ahmadiyya community.

7. It hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in 1992 and 2013

The Swedish broadcaster Sveriges Television (SVT) announced on July 8, 2012, that Malmö Arena in Malmö would host the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest. The competition was held in Sweden for the fifth time, following 1975, 1985, 1992, and 2000, and for the second time, following 1992, in Malmö.

SVT expressed a desire to host the contest in a slightly smaller venue than in previous years, as well as in a smaller environment that is easier to dedicate and decorate for other events and celebrations within the host city. These considerations influenced the selection of Malmö Arena as the host venue, as well as Malmö’s position as Sweden’s third-largest city by population after Stockholm and Gothenburg, the two other initial location-bidders.

8. Malmö FF is one of Sweden’s largest football clubs

Malmö FF, the Swedish football club with the most national championships and the only Nordic club to reach the European Cup final, is based there. The club was founded in 1905 as a result of a municipal initiative to encourage young people in Malmö to participate in organized football.

9. Malmöhus changed dramatically since the construction of the resund Bridge

It was one of Scandinavia’s first and most industrialized towns, but it struggled to adapt to post-industrialism. Malmö has undergone a major transformation since the completion of the resund Bridge in 2000, producing new architectural developments, supporting new biotech and IT companies, and attracting students through Malmö University and other higher education facilities.

Malmö’s demographics have changed over time, and by the turn of the 2020s, nearly half of the municipal population had a foreign background.

10. It hosted the Baltic Exhibition in 1914

The event celebrated the industries, arts, and cultures of Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and Russia, the four countries that bordered the Baltic Sea at the time.  There are no beaches on the Baltic in the city itself, but there is one nearby at resund.

The Baltic Games were held concurrently, and they remain one of the largest sporting events ever held in Malmö. Following the Olympics in Stockholm in 1912, interest in sports increased rapidly in Sweden, which was one of the reasons why the Baltic Games grew so large.
