1. Folke the Fat
He was a prominent Swedish politician of the 12th century. Folke the Fat leadership of Sweden in the 1100s was powerful. He married from a noble family, the Danish king’s daughter.
Her name was Ingegerd Knutsdotter and her father, the Denmark king was Canute. They had two sons named Knut and Benedict.

Another famous Swedish politician during the 12th century was Earl Birger Brosa. He was a powerful leader as Folke Fat ruling Sweden between 1174 and 1202.
This Swedish politician was well known in the 13th century. He was born on c. 1210 and lived until 21 October 1266.
He was part of the famed House of Bjelbo. This house was a lineage of kings, jarls, and Swedish clergymen. His political impact in Sweden came when he sought the consolidation of Sweden.
His other political landmark was leading the country in the Second Swedish Crusade. This crusade set up Finland under the rule of Sweden. Birger Jarl’s other highlight was establishing Stockholm, Sweden’s capital about 1250.
3. Bridget of Sweden

She was a famous Swedish politician and both saint and mystic during the 14th century. After 20 years of marriage, she became a widow and founded the Bridgettines nuns and monks. She was born in c. 1303 and died on 23 July 1373.
4. Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson
Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson-
Engelbrektsson was a popular Swedish politician of the 15th century. His family migrated to Sweden in the 1360s from Germany. He was born in the 1390s and died in May 1436 after his assassination.
As a Swedish leader, he led 1434, Engelbrekt rebellion. Its aim was against the king of Kalmar Union Eric of Pomerania.
The rebellion stretched from 1434-36. Its impact broke the unity of the Kalmar Union to the extent that the Danish armies were forced out of Sweden for a temporary season.
To honor Engelbrekt, the Stockholm Diocese of the Church of Sweden named two of its facilities after him. They are the Engelbrekt Âé¶¹APPh and the Engelbrekt Church.
Other politicians of the 15th century that made a significant mark are Karl Bonde Knutson and Elder Sten Sture.
5. Gyllenstierna Christina

Gyllenstierna was a 16th-century Swedish politician with well-established political popularity. She was married to Sten Sture the Younger who was a Swedish regent. She was part of the Gyllenstierna house of nobility, hence her name.
Christina Gyllenstierna is appreciated in Swedish political history for leading a resistance against the Kalmar Union king at the time. Christian II of Denmark was the king ruling over Sweden from 1520-21.
Christian II was at the same time ruler over Denmark and Norway. Gyllenstierna sought her role in politics after she became a widow. Christina was born in 1494 and she lived up to January 1559.

6. Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie

The 17th-century Swedish political space acknowledges the prominence of Magnus Gabriel in the political arena. He joined the Swedish Privy Council in 1647.
While a member of the council, he served in all three of the highest positions within the council. These positions were Lord High Chancellor, Treasurer, and Steward. Magnus thrived in all three.
When the Livonia Swedish dominion came to be, Magnus Gabriel became the Governor-General. He was born in October 1622 and died in April 1686.
This century had many famous Swedish politicians. Among them were, Gustav Bonde, Bengt Oxenstierna and Johann Patkul among others.
7. Arvid Horn

Horn was a Swedish popular politician and diplomat of the 18th century. He was born on 6 April 1664 and he died on 18 April 1742.
The Horn family where Arvid had his ancestry was noble. Arvid positioned himself well in Swedish politics and rose to the presidency position in the Privy Council Chancellery. He served in the council at the helm of power for two terms.
His first leadership of the Privy Council was from 1710 until 1719, and the second term was from 1720 to 1738. He was a forefront supporter of the Age of Liberty era in Sweden.
Axel Fersen, Senior was among the Swedish politicians who established their leadership in the country during the 18th century. Other famous politicians during that time were Jacob Magnus Sprengtporten, Gustaf Adolf Reuterholm, and Göran Magnus Sprengtporten.
8. Johan Gabriel Richert

In the 19th century, Richert gained political fame in Sweden. Being a lawyer by profession, he was able to fight for his country’s liberalism which was a great act of patriotism.
Johan voiced his opinion by pushing for Swedish legal reforms in the mid-19th century. Johan whose birthdate is 24 March 1784 died on 2 January 1864.

9. Ingvar Carlsson

Carlsson was an eminent Swedish politician during the 20th century. This politician has his birthplace as Sweden on 9 November 1934. His popularity in the politics of Sweden is shown in the public offices he served in.
Ingvar was a representative of Stockholm County, he became Minister of Education from 1969 to 1973. He served twice as Minister of Housing, in 1973 and from 1974-76.
He was Minister of Environmental Affairs for a year from 1985 ending in 1986. Carlsson rose to a higher office in 1982 as Deputy Prime Minister and served until 1986.
He rose to the position of Sweden’s Prime Minister in 1986. His ascension to office was to fill in the gap left by Olof Palme who was serving as Prime Minister of Sweden at the time of his assassination.
He held the position at two different times. Starting 1986 up to 1991 and the second time beginning in 1994 to 1996.
Carlsson’s leadership in Sweden was marked by collaborations with other neighboring nations. A good example is that he led Sweden to be part of the European Union. His leadership of the Swedish Social Democratic Party from 1986 to 1996 is remarkable in Swedish political history.

10. Jan Björklund

Björklund is a prominent Swedish politician of the 21st century. He was born in Sweden on 18 April 1962. He represented Stockholm county in the Riksdag starting 2006 until 2019.
The liberal politician was Minister for Education starting in 2007 and ending in 2014. He secured the position of Deputy Prime Minister in 2010 where he served up to 2014. In September 2020 he took up a diplomatic role as Swedish Ambassador to Italy.
