Sweden is the largest Nordic country and, in its pit, exists centuries of history, from Vikings raids to its rich tales of Norse mythology.

The History of Sweden dates back as far as 8,000 BC to 6,000BC when Sweden became populated by people who relied on hunting, gathering, and fishing by use of simple tools.

Despite the alluring beauty its geography portrays, the history of the land was dominated by wars that have shaped what it is today.

In this article, we will dive into the top ten famous historical events that happened in Sweden.

1. There was the age of the Vikings

Sweden is famously associated with the legends of the Vikings, a group bundled together because of their common cultural traits.

The age of the Vikings was marked by a significant expansion of activities. Vikings Explored as far as the black and Caspian seas, where they formed trade relations with the Byzantine and the Arab kingdoms, their expeditions dint just aim at trade but they also caused havoc along the Baltic coast and the rivers that stretched deep into present-day Russia

They were skilled seafarers as they were warriors, the ones from Norway and Denmark diverted to sail south and west of modern-day continental Europe. They penetrated Eastern Europe through its long rivers.

2. There was the incidence of the Stockholm massacre

One of the most tragic events in the history of Sweden is the massacre of the nobles 1n 1520.

The gruesome event took form when Swedish nobles expressed their dissatisfaction with how they were gradually losing power and rebelling against the Danish Union King.

With their rebellion, the king conceded to their demands and went ahead with holding a banquet to celebrate their victory which should have been a red flag for the nobles but they happily went into the lion’s den unaware of their doomed fate.

Upon gathering in the banquet hall, they were caught off guard by Danish guards who arrested them and held them for a trial the following day.

What followed afterward was a nightmare that stained the lands of Sweden with blood.

Nearly one hundred of the noblemen arrested were accused of being heretics and beheaded in the great square. The grisly event came to know as the Stockholm bloodbath.

3. There was the great Northern War

Three states, Russia, Denmark, and Saxony-Poland ganged up on Sweden attacking it from three sides, taking advantage of the fact that the country then was been ruled by the fifteen-year-old King Charles X11.

Despite the predicament, the country found itself in, the Swedish army fought hard to defend their country and they almost succeeded in fending off the Danish western attack.

They went to win against Poland in the south, but instead of returning home to celebrate their victories, the young King due to greed for power pushed his army to conquer Moscow.

This erratic decision was the reason why the Sweden empire fell into ruins.

The Swedish army faced a severe winter on their March to Moscow and the final blow to the World-shattering defeat emerged when the Russian army decimated the Swedish force outside the Ukrainian town of Poltava.

The Swedish King realizing the fall of the empire he once led, fled to Turkey and Russia became the primary ruler.

4. There was the Gustav Vasa rebellion

After the horrific scene of the Stockholm massacre, disguised as a farmer, a young noble Gustav Vasa whose father was also part of the executed nobles made a journey to the north to seek help from the powerful peasantry.

Though he was forced into the wilderness by forces that were trying to persecute him, he managed to raise a rebel army, unexpectedly they defeated the Danish union and he was crowned the king.

It’s this heroic liberation that earned him the title of the parent of the nation for the great contributions he made to his country.

5.There was the assassination of Prime minister Olof Palme

The murder of the popular prime minister Olof Palme, on February 28, 1986, on Sveavägen in Stockholm was one of the most shocking events in the history of Sweden.

The actual perpetrator has never been caught despite several investigations carried out and his death remains a mystery to Swedish people.

 6. There was the black death

Also known as the great death, was a major catastrophe that crept in Sweden between 1350 and 1351.

The aftermath of the plague was truly devastating its believed to have killed a third of the population, and Sweden wasn’t to recover fully for three hundred years.

The plague sneaked into the country in the summer of 1349 and it reached the port of Norway, Gotland likely from a ship from Denmark or Germany.

Though the progress of the black death is not directly described in contemporary sources, it can be traced by indirect documentation such as wills and donations to the church.

7. The Sweden empire was born

In the 16th century, Gustav Vasa fought for an independent Sweden and after gaining victory in the rebellion he laid the foundation for modern Sweden.

He conquered lands to the point of becoming the third largest country in Europe. King Gustav was not just a leader but a visionary as well.

He dealt away the Papacy and established the Lutheran Church and by doing so he curbed the power of the church.

He created systematic Tax reforms that were considered fair to all taxpayers, confiscated church lands that comprised 21% of the farmland, and suppressed aristocratic opposition to his ecclesiastical policies and efforts at centralization.

In the year 1535, a war broke out with Luebeck which favorably resulted in the explosion of the Hanseatic traders, who had complete control of foreign trade.

Sweden handed the power of trade to its people and with no foreign blockage on their path, the country’s economy boomed rapidly and by 1544 Gustavus controlled 60th of the Farmland in all of Sweden.

With economic charm on its side, Sweden built the first modern army in Europe, supported by a sophisticated tax system and government Bureaucracy.

8. There were the Nordic Seven-year wars

One of the greatest series of conflicts was between Sweden and Denmark _Norway which encouraged the collapse of the Union of Kalmar.

Denmark and Sweden are the only countries throughout history that have fought the most wars against each other.

The tension and enmity between the two countries expanded as the days progressed and Denmark made the first move by assembling a professional mercenary army of about 25_28 thousand men which embarked for Sweden on 5th August from Copenhagen.

Though the Swedes responded by trying to capture the Danish town of Halmstad, their soldiers were made of inexperienced troops.

Long battles were fought and minor victories were gained by Sweden. The peace of Stetting ended the Nordic Seven year’s war and also put a stop to the hostilities between Poland _and Lithuania.

9.Post_war Sweden

Sweden was one of the first participants of World War two to join the United Nations, the country also stayed out of alliances and decided to remain officially neutral during the whole cold war, never even joining NATO.

The social democratic party spent most of the 1950s and 1960s building the people’s homes (Folkhemmet).

10. There was the great migration

In the second half of the 19th century, Sweden wrestled with poverty and underdevelopment

The situation was so alarming that many Swedes decided to leave the country in hope of finding greener pastures.
