British ship’s captain, Captain William Mackwood founded the Mackwoods Labookellie Tea Centre. The firm was under the Mackwoods family for several years before the ownership was changed.

The Mackwoods family were in charge of the factory for several years before the official takeover. In 1957, a visionary Sri Lankan entrepreneur by the name of Mr N.S.O Mendis took over.

He became the first Sri Lankan to become the owner of a British Company with plantation interests. After Mr N.S.O Mendis, his daughter, Mrs Sriyani Nonis became the Chairperson.

She was the only Sri Lankan female to head a plantation company. Mrs Sriyan steered the company to great achievements.

She helped the company’s investments in human capital, process engineering and modernisation, sustainability and development and diversification initiatives.
