Top 10 Things to do in San Sebastian, Spain
San Sebastián is a small resort town on the Bay of Biscay in Spain’s mountainous Basque Country. It is well known for Playa de la Concha and Playa de Ondarreta.
These are beaches enclosed by a picturesque bayfront promenade, and world-renowned restaurants helmed by state-of-the-art chefs.
Its Old Town is characterized by cobblestone walkways, upscale shops and fancy bars that pair local wines with tasty local bites.
San Sebastian is one of the most diverse cities in Southern Europe. In addition to its standing for culinary excellence, it also prides itself in a variety of exciting activities. I have put together the top 10 things to do while here, read on.
1. Stroll along the seaside at La Concha Promenade
Start with a stroll to the seaside, it is one of the best ways to get to know the city while enjoying beautiful views of the sea.
The promenade stretches for about 2 kilometres along the sandy coastline. There are beach side bars and restaurants where you can get a drink or grab something to eat.
This walkway is the highlight of the city and has a bay, a beach and an Island known as Santa Clara Island. Go in the evening for magical sunsets, the walkway is well lit at night.
There is an aquarium close to the marina along Kaiko Pasealekua. On the other side are Zurriola beach and Sagues Park at the Paloma de la Paz sculpture.
2. Visit Parque de Aiete

Take time and visit this 19th century Palace that belonged to the Dukes of Bailen. It was a pilgrimage stopover for those going to Santiago de Compostela. Notables stayed here including Queen Victoria of England.
The Palace grounds have been turned into a recreation public park and host cultural events. The park was designed by Pierre Ducasse, a French landscape architect.
The park features a pond, caves, and waterfalls. You will also find several tree species and flowers. It is a pleasant place to be especially in Spring and summer when the flowers bloom.
3. Visit Catedral del Buen Pastor
This is the largest church building in the city of San Sebastian. The church is also known as the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd is found in New Town after Called de San Martin. Construction of the Cathedral began in 1880 by Manuel de Echave, a Basque architect, and completed in 1897.
It features a high tower that is 75 metres tall and has an inspiring edifice making it an important landmark in the city. Sandstone from Monte Igueldo was used in the construction.
Its interior is large and spacious with asymmetrical Latin cross and three naves. The sanctuary has stained-glass windows designed by Juan Bautista Lazaro.
There are statues of Nuestra Senora del Carmen, Saint Antonio, Saint Teresa and Sagrado Corazon at the high altar.
4. See the Peine del Viento sculptures

These sculptures are located at the foot of Monte Igueldo at the end of Ondarreta beach. Â They are one of the most famous sculptures done by local Basque artist Eduardo Chillida.
The sculptures are made of three curved steel joined on huge granite rocks in the sea. He completed them in 1976. For a spectacular show, go to the sea when the waves are high. They crash on the sculptures and explode high int the air, it is quite thrilling.
He named them peine del Viento after the combination of the shape of a twisted comb and the movement of the wind.
5. Monte Urgull & Monte UlÃa: Historic Sites & Nature Walks

The historical sites and nature walk trails start from the aquarium and cover the entire Monte Urgull. There is an impressive 12th-century fortress, Castillo de la Mota, and the statue of the sacred heart.
Enjoy scenic views of the rocky shoreline stretching to Urumea River from Paseo Nuevo promenade. The promenade reaches Monte Ulia past the Zurriola bridge.
Ulia Park provides a beautiful natural space perfect for hiking, relaxing and picnicking. Mirador de Ulia restaurant is nestled in the park with views of the city, beach and water, you can have your meals here if picnics is not an option.
6. Stroll through Parte Vieja (Old Town)
The Old Town of San Sebastian is nestled between the base of Monte Urgull and Alameda del Boulevard. This is one of the most popular places in the city attracting both tourists and locals.
There is an arcaded plaza at the centre of the old town known as Plaza de la Constitución. It is a large public space that used to host bullfights.
Among the buildings in the arcade are the Neoclassical Municipal library and the fish market. Close by is the 16th century Iglesias de San Vicente which is a Gothic church as well as the oldest church in the city.
7. Enjoy the Seaside Elegance and Beautiful Beach at La Concha Bay

This splendid white sand beach at BahÃa de la Concha is one of the most iconic sights in San Sebastian. It features a broad shoreline with an extensive beach that is constantly kissed by the soft waves.
The beach overlooks the city providing an elegant ambience. The waters are safe to swim in, this area is found near the former royal bathing pavilion.
Other than swimming and sunbathing on the beach, you can take a stroll along the promenade with railing and street lamps. Close by is Alameda del Boulevard perfect for shopping, dining and enjoying a drink.
8. Take the Funicular up to Monte Igueldo for Exceptional Panoramic Views

For a different view and experience in San Sebastian, take the train up the steep Monte Igueldo. You will have fascinating views of the city’s coastline and the mountains 184 metres above sea level.
There is an amusement park, Parque de Atracciones de Monte Igueldo, with attractive carousels and a traditional roller coaster. A fun place to take the kids after enjoying the views.
Sample some delicious meals at the restaurants and food stands. They have balconies with beautiful views of the mountain.
Another attraction on this mountain is the El Torreon tower built in the 16th century. Climb it to see the lighthouse and the rolling hills of the Basque countryside.
9. Tour the Miramar Royal Palace
The design and construction of this Palace began in 1888 with Selden Wornum from England and was completed by Benito Olasagasti. It has well-tended gardens overlooking the sea.
This palace served as a vacation home for the Spanish royal family. Many Spanish Queens loved spending their summer holiday here.
The Palace features an octagonal tower and half-timbered details. Two of the floors were used as a private residence for the royalty while the third floor was used by the servants.
While the palace grounds are open to the public, the building remains closed.
10. Isla de Santa Clara

A perfect getaway from the city is venturing to Santa Clara Island. It is a 30-metre wide Historical National Interest Site. Although tiny, the island has cafés, restaurants, picnic areas and a post office.
If you happen to be in the city during the summer, catch the ferry that goes to the Island every 30 minutes. Swim at the beach where lifeguards are on watch. There are a few natural swimming pools on the Island.
