Gavi is a professional football player currently playing at the Catalan club FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team. Referred to as Gavi, you wouldn’t be blamed for assuming that’s his whole name. However, His full name is Pablo MartÃn Páez Gavira.
Gavi was born and raised in Seville, Spain on 5th August 2004. At merely 18 years old (as of 2022), Gavi has established himself as a regular for Barcelona as well as the Spanish national team.
Gavi is part of Barcelona’s rejuvenized squad full of young talents that have the prospects of becoming world beaters. Alongside the likes of Pedri, Gavi is a product of the La Masia academy and has been likened to his current coach Xavi.

1. Born and Raised in Seville, Spain
Pablo Gavi was up in a Sevilla, Spain, football-mad family. He was raised in Seville’s Los Palacios y Villafranca, which has a population of about 40,000. Fabian Ruiz and Jesus Navas, two other footballers, were interestingly raised as well.
Raised in a football-obsessed family, it’s natural that Gavi fell in love with the game as well. As a young boy, he started displaying talent and natural skill with a football. His parents, therefore, enrolled him at La Liara Balompié, a club in his hometown in 2010.
2. Scored 95 goals in 2 Seasons at Real Betis Youth Academy
After joining La Liara Balompié in 2010 at age 6, Gavi spent two years at the local club. Within these two years, he had managed to get the attention of Real Betis. Betis went ahead and recruited Gavi into their youth academy in 2012.
Gavi spent 2 years at Real Betis where his talent was on display for arguably a bigger crowd compared to La Liara Balompié. Within these two years, Gavi caught the eye of La Masia scouts.
3. Scouted by Many Clubs Including Real Madrid
Within the 2 years, records show Gavi scored a total of 95 goals. It’s hard for anyone not to notice that this was talent and hard work.
At this young age, Gavi became one of the most sought talents in all of Spain. He was scouted by giant clubs such as Villareal, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, and even Real Madrid. However, Gavi chose Barcelona as his preferred destination.
Come to think of it, as much as Barcelona fans appreciate and love that he plays for them, they love that he turned down their Madrid rivals.
4. Often Plays with Untied Shoe Laces
If you’ve had the chance to watch Gavi, you’ll notice that he plays with his shoelaces untied most of the time. There have been many theories by fans on why he does this. Let’s look at a few:
Some footballers are superstitious by nature. Some fans have suggested that the untied shoelaces are merely Gavi’s superstition much like how some players touch the grass or jump before stepping on the field.

5. Joined La Masia In 2015
In 2015, Pedro Gavi joined Barcelona and became a student of the famed La Masia football academy. He progressed fast in Barcelona and in 2020 he signed his first professional contract with Barcelona.
After penning the contract, he was immediately promoted to the under-19 squad from the under-16s. He made his debut for Barcelona’s reserve team (Barcelona B) in February 2021as a substitute. In March 2021, he made his first start for the reserve team against Espanyol reserves.
6. Got His Breakthrough Under Ronald Koeman
During the 2021/22 pre-season, Gavi was promoted to the first team by Koeman. Gavi was part of several players promoted from Barca B to the senior team. However, he is one of the few who have stood the test of time.
Under Koeman, he was able to display his potential in front of the world. After good performances, he was said to have pushed ahead of Riqui Puig in Ronald Koeman’s squad selection.
On 29 August 2021, he played his first official match for Barcelona’s first team in the 2–1 La Liga win over Getafe, replacing Sergi Roberto in the 73rd minute. On 18 December, he scored his first goal for the club and provided an assist in the 3–2 home win over Elche.
7. Comapred to Xavi and Iniesta

9. 2022 Kopa Trophy Winner
The Kopa Trophy is presented to the best-performing player under the age of 21. Gavi won the 2022 Kopa trophy beating out Jamal Musiala (3rd place) and Eduardo Camavinga (2nd place). Âé¶¹APP Saint-Germain forwards Kylian Mbappe, Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt and Pedri are previous winners of the prestigious award.
10. Youngest Player to Ever Represent Spain at Senior Level
On 30th September 2021, Gavi got his first international call-up to Spain’s national team by manager Luis Enrique. He made his debut against Italy in the UEFA Nations League semi-final on 6th October.
This appearance made him the youngest player to ever represent Spain at the senior level. He scored his first goal as a senior on June 5, 2022, while playing abroad for the Czech Republic in the Nations League. He scored the first goal ever by a player representing Spain at the senior level.
Spain boss Luis Enrique announced his 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in early November. Gavi alongside his teammates Ansu Fati and Pedri all made the squad and will be traveling to Qatar with Spain.
