1 Adut Aketch

Adut Aketch Bior is a South Sudanese Australian Model who was born on 25th December 1999. She was picked as a model of the year in 2018 by models .com. This hour was also repeated next year. She was born in South Sudan but was raised in Kenya. When she was seven years old they relocated to Australia. She was one of the fifteen women selected to appear on the cover of the September 2019 issue of British Vogue, by the guest editor Meghan Duchess of Sussex.

Aketch has done 4 campaigns and closed 2 shows for Saint Laurent, 1 Campaign and 2 shows for Valentino, one campaign for Zara and one campaign for Moschino. She’s walked for Alexander, McQueen, Prada, Tom Ford, Off White, and Versace among others. Adut Aketch is respected in the industry of fashion and beauty.

2 Salva Kiir Mayardit

Salva Kiir is one of the most famous politicians. He was born on 13th September 1951. He is a south Sundanese politician who has been president of South Sudan since its independence. He was named Commander in Chief of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) in 2005 after the death of Dr John Garang.

His biography has been translated into 62 different languages. His father, Kuethpiny ThIIK Atem was a cattle herder who belongs to the Payum clan. His presidency period was a pure time of reconstruction. His political career has made him successful.

3 Luol Ajou Deng

Luol Deng was born on 16th April 1985. He was born in south Sudan. He fled the country as a child with his parents to settle in the United Kingdom. Deng is a British former professional basket player and he’s very famous for his talent. He was a two-time NBA All Star and was named to the NBA all Defensive Second Team in 2012.

During his high school days, he was considered the second most promising high school senior after LeBron James and was named First Team All-America by Prada and US today. He is also the cover athlete for NBA Live 09 and NBA Live10 video games in the UK not forgetting he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2021 Birthday Honours for service to Basketball.

4 Alek Wek

Alek Wek was born on 16th April 1977, she is from the Dinka ethnic group, south Sudan but she fled to Britain In 1991 to escape the civil war in Sudan. Alek has changed the perception of beauty and was listed as one of the BBC 100 Women. She enrolled in the London school of fashion and studied Fashion business and Technology.

She was signed to Ford Models in 1996 and also appeared in the ‘Got til its Gone’ music video by Janet Jackson. She was named model of the year in 1997 by MTV and was the first African Model to appear on the cover of Elle that year. Alek has been appreciated not only in her birth country but also worldwide and has inspired different black girls to see themselves differently.

5 James Moga

James Joseph Moga was born on 14th June 1983 and is a professional footballer who played as a striker. In the match celebrating South Sudan’s independence from Sudan, he scored the first goal against tusker from Kenya.

During the First ever south Sudan international match against Uganda, Moga was able to score his first-ever international goal leading to a draw of 2-2 between the teams. In May 2019 Moga joined Brothers Union of Bangladesh Premier league as a midterm transfer window timing.

6 Lam Akol

Lam Akol was born on 15th July 1950 and is a south Sudanese politician. He received a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College London and taught at the University of Khartoum. His nickname is ALPHA BETA and is a former high-ranking official in the Sudanese People’s Liberation Army (SPLA).

He was appointed as a Sudanese minister of Transportation and served for four years. In 2002 Akol resigned from the ruling National Congress (NCPA) and became a key member of the newly formed opposition Justice party. In 2005 he wrote a peace detailing his role as a negotiator on behalf of Garang in the Initiation of Operation Life Line Sudan.

7 Thon Maker

Thon Maker is a south Sudanese –Australian Professional basketball player who was born on 25th February 1997. He attended high school at Orangeville District Secondary School and played basketball for Canada’s athlete Institute. He was chosen 10th overall in the 2016 NBA Draft and played three different NBA Teams between 2016 and 2021.

Maker attended the 2016 NBA Draft Combine and he measured as the third tallest player without shoes at 6 ft. and recorded the highest no-step vertical Jump. Thon is celebrated internationally for his marvellous skills in Basketball.

8 Emmanual Jal

Emmanual Jal was born on 1st January 1980 and is a south Sudanese-Canadian artist actor, singer and former War Child. He is also a political activist. While Jal was studying in Kenya he started singing which helped him express the hardship he had faced in his life.

He used his music to communicate peace to his people back home. His first single “All we need is Jesus” was a hit both locally and international. It made waves in Kenya and received airplay in the Uk. He was awarded the 2005 American Gospel Music award for best international Artist. His experience during his war childhood years allowed him to fight for peace and make good music that communicated the right message to all.

9 Ger Duany

Ger Duany was born in the year 1978 in Akobo, Greater Upper Nile in south Sudan. He faced the harsh reality of life at the tender age of seven and was forced to flee from his country due to war. He went to Ethiopia and then Kenya. Later on, he became a refugee in the United States and that is where he settled

Ger is a famous actor and has stored in various shows including the 2004 philosophical comedy film”Heart Huckabees in which he played a refugee. He landed the role because the director wanted someone who had endured the real-life experience of a refugee. Ger is not only a talented actor but also a model and he has appeared in various magazines such as Heed, Bleu and Numero. In year 2005 World Refugees Day, he was announced as the UNHCRs Goodwill Ambassadors.

10 Anok Yai

Anok Yai was born on December 20th1997 and is a south Sudanese- American model. She is the first south Sudanese woman to open a Prada show and is currently ranked as one of the top 50 models by model.com.

She was featured on the cover of Vogue Japan in 2019 and in 2020 she was featured on the vogue cover of the Netherlands and Vogue Germany. Yai was first discovered by a professional photographer during Howard University homecoming week. The photographer asked to take the pictures and after he posted the photos on Instagram she went viral. Many modelling agencies reached out but she choose to sign with “Next Modelling Agency”. She encourages women of colour.
