Jean-Paul Duminy who was born on 14th April 1984, commonly commonly known as JP Duminy, is a South African cricket commentator, and former international cricketer. He was vice-captain of the South Africa Twenty20 team.

He is a left-handed batsman and a right-arm off spin bowler. Duminy, who is a Cape Coloured, was raised in the Western Cape and played domestic cricket for his home team, the Cape Cobras.Let’s take a look at some of the most remarkable facts about him;

Replacing injured vice-captain Ashwell Prince, Duminy made his Test debut against Australia at the WACA in Perth on 17 December 2008, scoring 50 in the second innings and putting on an unbroken century partnership with AB de Villiers.

His performance was lauded by numerous critics, including Peter Roebuck. In the next Test match, Duminy combined with the tailenders to score his maiden Test century, making 166 runs. South Africa were more than 200 runs in arrears when they lost their seventh wicket in the first innings. 

2.He played for several clubs and several leagues

Duminy played in the Indian Premier League in 2009 after the Mumbai Indians franchise acquired him for US$950,000. He scored two half-centuries in the tournament. Duminy went on to play for Sunrisers Hyderabad and Deccan Chargers and was named the captain of Delhi Daredevils in 2015. He was bought back by Mumbai Indians for the 2018 season and later released ahead of the 2019 IPL auction.

He also played in the Pakistan Super League in 2018 for Islamabad United whom he captained to the league title. He captained Winnipeg Hawks to the 2019 Global T20 Canada title, with Duminy named Player of the Tournament during which he was the leading run scorer.His final T20 tournament was the 2019 Caribbean Premier League when he played for Barbados Tridents

3.He became known during the South African under-19s tour to England in 2003

Duminy is a successful batsman generally occupying the top order, a skilled fielder and a useful change bowler. He became known during the South African under-19s tour to England in 2003 and in the 2003–04 domestic season. 

He averaged over 72, two years after breaking into South Africa’s Western Province side. Though he bowls less frequently in One Day Internationals, he has also found success with the ball, making his ODI debut in 2004 against Sri Lanka.

A classy left-hander with a full range of shots, JP Duminy’s career has become a story of unfulfilled promise against the backdrop of bad luck with injury. Duminy is best known for his cover drive, square cut, quick wrists and athletic fielding. With more than a decade of international cricket to his name, his most prized accomplishment was becoming South Africa’s leading T20 run-scorer, in 2013.

He is also the first from the country to amass 1500 runs in the format.Duminy made his ODI debut in 2004 but had a forgettable run with two ducks in five innings and was only recalled two years later. In 2006, he made 60 on comeback against Zimbabwe, but it was not enough to send him to the 2007 World Cup.

5.2014 was his most productive Test year

2014 was his most productive Test year, with centuries against Australia and Sri Lanka, but his form tapered after that. After playing an important part in the 2015 T20 series win in India, he picked up a finger injury, which kept him out of two ODIs and a Test on that tour.

When he recovered, Duminy found it difficult to balance the responsibility of being used as a part-time bowler with holding the middle order together. As a result, both disciplines seemed to suffer. He also struggled with a hamstring problem during the 2016 World T20.

Most of his career has been hampered by injuries including; After making a comeback into the national team, Duminy, unfortunately, suffered an injury on the first day of the first Test against Australia in Brisbane in December 2012. He ended up with a ruptured Achilles tendon in his left heel.

He did not take further part in the match and was ruled out for six months. Due to that injury, he missed a major part of the 2013 season. However, since then, he has been troubled by a knee injury, but Duminy is a vital cog in the side as he is also a handy off-spinner.

He was bagged for $950,000 by Mumbai Indians in the 2009 edition of the Indian Premier League, a time when Duminy was at the prime of his game. He met the expectations of the T20 franchise, averaging higher than Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya.

He was a part of Deccan Chargers in 2011-2012 and a part of Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013. He was bought by Delhi daredevils in 2014 and has been playing for them ever since.He continues to perform well in the shortest format of the game and stats show that his average is close to 40 in 77 matches. 

8.He retired from Test cricket at age of 33 in 2017

JP Duminy holds the record of being the only South African player to take a hatrick in a World Cup. He achieved this feat against Sri Lanka in the 2015 World Cup. Duminy retired from Test cricket at age of 33 in 2017 after being dropped for a Test against Bangladesh.

He continues to play in the shorter formats of the game and would be hoping to carry his team to a World Cup win in 2019, a feat South Africa is yet to achieve.He is considered one of the best players to come from South Africa and the African continent at large.

The couple has two daughters known as Isabella Duminy & Lexi Duminy respectively. Duminy and his family are Christians, and he returned to religion in 2013 during an international tour of Sri Lanka.
