One sport that is typically reserved for the wealthy and is linked with luxury and status is golf. But some people play golf professionally.

Rory Sabbatini is one such individual. Due to his extensive playing history, Rory is widely known in the golfing community.

He has taken part in some of the world’s best competitions. Professional golfer Rory Mario Trevor Sabbatini was born in Slovakia and South Africa on April 2, 1976.

 Between 2000 and 2011, he claimed six PGA Tour victories. He also finished second in the 2007 Masters.

In late 2007 and early 2008, he had 21 weeks in the top 10, reaching a peak of the eighth. Slovakia’s Sabbatini won the silver medal in the 2020 Summer Olympics.

1. Sabbatini has Italian, Scottish, and Irish ancestry

Sabbatini was born in Durban, South Africa, and is descended from Italian, Scottish, and Irish ancestors.

His mother worked from home, while his father, Frank, was a general practitioner. He has a sister named Shelley and an older brother named Gary.

2. He began playing golf at a young age 

At age 4, he began playing golf but didn’t really focus on it until he was twelve.

He was signed by the University of Arizona, became a pro in 1998, and started playing on the PGA Tour in 1999. He was the tour’s youngest participant that particular year.

3. Sabbatini’s fury may be more well-known than his success in major league games

Ben Crane’s poor play during the final round of the 2005 Booz Allen Classic may have irritated Sabbatini, who finished the hole and moved on to the next tee while leaving Crane behind to finish the round alone.

He received harsh criticism as well as some sympathy, and he eventually offered an apology.

Sabbatini also caused a stir during the Wachovia Championship in May 2007 when he said that Tiger Woods was “more beatable than ever” after losing the event on Sunday despite leading the field by one stroke after day three.

In 2011, Sabbatini stirred up further controversy when, at the Northern Trust Open, a volunteer assisted find his ball after he shot it in the rough.

However, Sabbatini shouted at the volunteer because he believed the person had moved his ball. He later offered an apology to avoid punishment.

Later in 2011, at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Sabbatini and playing partner Sean O’Hair got into a furious dispute that was filled with foul language for an unspecified reason.

His punishment was also kept a secret according to PGA Tour rules.

4. He has been married twice and divorced once

Amy Sabbatini is the first spouse of Rory Sabbatini. In the early 2000s, they got married. They had a baby boy named Simon not long after being married.

Unfortunately, their union was short-lived. They parted ways in the middle of 2010 and moved on with life.

He wed Martine Stofanikova shortly after getting divorced. Before exchanging wedding vows, the couple dated one other for a very long time.

From her former union with Boris Kollar, Martina has a son by the name of Simon.

5. Sabbatini reached the top 10 of the world rankings for the first time in 2007

Sabbatini scored five PGA Tour victories in the early 2000s. He concluded 2006 ranked 12th in money earned.

He first cracked the top 10 in the global rankings in September 2007. Between September 2007 and March 2008, he had 21 weeks in the top 10, reaching a peak of the eighth.

6. Sabbatini acquired citizenship in Slovakia to help grow the game in that country

Sabbatini acquired citizenship in Slovakia in December 2018, the nation where his wife and stepson were born.  The Slovak Golf Association’s vice president is a cousin of Sabbatini’s wife.

The move was reportedly undertaken to assist Sabbatini to qualify for the 2020 Olympics at first, but he later clarified that it was done to advance the game in that nation.

The OWGR (Official World Golf Ranking) is used for Olympic qualification, hence Sabbatini, who is currently ranked 201st, would not have qualified for South Africa with 10 players ahead of him.

7. He won the silver medal in the 2020 Summer Olympics

Sabbatini earned a spot on Slovakia’s Olympic team for the 2020 Summer Games. o

On August 1, 2021, in Tokyo, Japan, he represented Slovakia in men’s individual golf. He took home the silver medal in place of American Xander Schauffele, who won the gold.

8. He’s one of the richest golf players in South Africa

As of 2022, Rory Sabbatini has an estimated net worth of $50 million. His main source of income is his career as a professional golfer.

He has made about $31 million on the PGA Tour and $300,000 on the Euro Tour in the last decade.

He loves to travel to various destinations with his family and also gives part of his wealth to charitable organizations.

9. Sabbatini won six times on the PGA Tour between 2000 and 2011

Sabbatini won five PGA Tour victories in the first ten years of the new millennium.

In September 2007, he initially cracked the top 10 on the Official World Ranking.  At the 2008 Masters Tournament’s Par 3 Contest, Rory came out on top.

Six times, Sabbatini has competed for South Africa in the World Cup, and in 2003, he and Trevor Immelman took home the trophy.

In 2007, when he made his first President’s Cup appearance, he had a record of 0-3-1.

In 2009, he defeated Brian Davis by two shots to win the HP Byron Nelson Championship, giving him his fifth PGA Tour victory.

At the Honda Classic in 2011, he defeated South Korean golfer Y.E Yang by one shot to win his sixth championship. In December 2019, he and partner Kevin Tway prevailed in the QBE shootout.

10. He has dual citizenship in the United States and a passport through the United Kingdom

The PGA Tour veteran, who was born and reared in South Africa, now resides in South Florida and holds dual citizenship with the United States and the United Kingdom.

Rory Sabbatini, 38, has a modest reputation. Those who are familiar with him may think he’s a lovely man who is simply misunderstood.
