10 Best Football (Soccer) Players from Slovenia


 

Slovenia has qualified for the FIFA World Cup on two occasions and the UEFA European Championship once, but has never progressed beyond the group stage of a finals tournament. At the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Slovenia achieved its first (and so far only) victory in a major tournament, defeating Algeria 1–0. However, they are not included in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Jan Oblak (born 7 January 1993) is a Slovenian professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for La Liga club Atlético Madrid and captains the Slovenia national team. He is ranked as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

He started his career for Portuguese club Benfica at the age of 17, and was part of the team that won the domestic treble in the 2013–14 season before moving to Atlético Madrid for a fee of €16 million, becoming La Liga’s most expensive goalkeeper at the time.

In 2015–16 he won the Ricardo Zamora Trophy five times for best goalkeeper, conceding an all-time record low of 18 goals. He was also nominated for the 2017 and 2018 Ballon d’Or awards, following his consistent performances with his club.

He started playing for the national team in 2012, and has been named Slovenian Footballer of the Year on six occasions. With over 350 appearances for Atlético Madrid, Oblak has won four trophies with the club, including the 2020–21 edition of La Liga.

2. Gregor Sikošek

 Gregor Sikošek (born 13 February 1994) is a Slovenian football defender who plays for Maribor. In November 2016, Sikošek received his first call-up to the senior Slovenia squad for the matches against Malta and Poland.

He has made a total of 239 career appearances for both club and national team and has scored a total of 6 career goals with one trophy in his cabinet.

3. Jasmin Kurtić

 Jasmin Kurtić (born 10 January 1989) is a Slovenian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Super League Greece club PAOK, on loan from Parma, and the Slovenia national team. He is a right-footed midfielder. Kurtić was a member of the Slovenia under-21 team, appearing in two friendlies in 2009. He made his senior debut against Greece on 26 May 2012, scoring a goal from a free kick.

Jasmin Kurtić has made a total of 498 career appearances for both club and national team. Jasmin Kurtić has scored a total of 50 career goals. This gives Jasmin a goal to game ratio of 0.1.

He likes to play long balls and is a specialist in indirect set-piece. Though he is also strong in aerial duels, holding to the ball, concentration and defensive play, he is also weak in tackling and making crosses.

4. Jaka Bijol

 Jaka Bijol (born 5 February 1999) is a Slovenian professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Italian club Udinese and the Slovenia national team. Initially a defensive midfielder, he switched to his current position in the 2021–22 season.  He played for CSKA Moscow before switching to Udinese.

He likes to play long balls and is good at aerial duels, passing and blocking the ball. Though, his weakness lies in tackling.

5. Benjamin Šeško

He is a Slovenian professional footballer who plays as a forward for Austrian Bundesliga club Red Bull Salzburg and the Slovenia national team. He is poised tol join German Bundesliga club RB Leipzig in July 2023.

His control of the ball, however, is a bit mixed. He’s often been subject to many aerial take-downs, which are sometimes executed gracefully but will more often than not run away from him. This can be said for his weight of touch against heavier passes as he doesn’t sort his body or feet correctly to absorb the pace of the ball.

6. Zlatko Zahovič

Zlatko Zahovič is a Slovenian former professional footballer who played as an attacking midfielder. He made a name for himself in Europe in Portugal, most notably with Porto and Benfica where he amassed Primeira Liga totals of 246 matches and 54 goals over one full decade. He then went on to have brief stints in Spain and Greece.

He was known for his dribbling skills and goal-scoring ability.  Although primarily a midfielder, he scored 11 goals in 32 Champions League appearances and 35 in 80 for the Slovenian national team.

 The all-time record holder in goals for Slovenia, Zahovič was an essential member of the squad as they qualified for the first time ever to a European Championship and a World Cup, in the early 2000s.

7. Alfred Jermaniš

Alfred Jermaniš (born 21 January 1967) is a retired Slovenian football midfielder. Jermaniš played in Slovenia, Japan, Austria and Cyprus.

He won the Slovenian PrvaLiga title in 1991–92 with Olympia and in 1995–96 with Gorica. He was capped 29 times and scored 1 goal for the Slovenian national team between 1992 and 1998.

8. Željko Milinovič

Željko Milinovič (born 12 October 1969) is a Slovenian former professional footballer who played as a defender. He represented his country at the two major tournaments for which they qualified the Euro 2000 and the World Cup 2002.

9. Miha Blažič

Miha Blažič (born 8 May 1993) is a Slovenian football defender who plays for Ligue 1 side Angers. He signed his first professional contract with Koper at the age of 17. He also played for Ferencváros, where  he won four consecutive league titles, from 2018–19 to 2021–22 and played in the 2020–21 UEFA Champions’ League group stage.

Blažič played for all Slovenian national youth teams from under-16 to under-21, with four years as a captain. He joined the senior team on 2 June 2018 in a friendly match against Montenegro.

10. Damjan Bohar

Damjan Bohar (born 18 October 1991) is a Slovenian professional footballer who plays as a left winger for Zagłębie Lubin. Besides Slovenia, he has played in Poland and Croatia.
