Sasha Selvaraj, better known by her stage name Ranjini, is a Singaporean born Indian actress known for her roles in Tamil, Malayalam films. She also did few Telugu films. She was the leading actress from 1985 to 1992.

Ranjini was born in Singapore as Sasha to Selvaraj and Lilly, belonging to fourth generation residents of Singapore, with roots from Tirunelveli. Let’s take a look at some of the most outstanding facts about her;

1.She was introduced to films by famous director Bharathiraja

She was introduced to films by famous director Bharathiraja who was a friend of her father. Bharathiraja gave her the screen name of “Ranjini” for his 1985 film Muthal Mariyathai.

Ranjini, whose family was in Singapore then had flown down to Chennai taking a break from studies with the hope that the shooting would get over within two weeks. She never looked back and became a star of her own with all the films she starred in becoming successes. 

2.She started her acting career in 1987

Her first Malayalam film was Swathi Thirunal in 1987, a National Award feature directed by Lenin Rajendran. The film was a critical success and she won The Cinema Express Award for Best Actress. 

She became a successful actress and  was a leading actress from 1985 to 1992.after her first film released, acting offers came pouring in and she thought to give acting a serious try. It is during this time, director P. Bharathiraja, changed her name and renamed her as Ranjini which was a more befitting name for an actress.

3.Together with here acting partner they were considered as the golden couple

Together with her acting partner Mohanlal they acted very well as a couple. The acting duo of Mohanlal and Ranjini are considered as the golden couple of the Malayalam cinema as this duo delivered back to back commercially as well as critically acclaimed Malayalam movies.

Mohanlal-Ranjini was one of the best duo in years and their acting as a couple made their fans love them the more. Their success on screen earned them a title as the “Golden Couple ” and together they made Malayalam movies lively. 

4.Ranjini has starred in several movies over the years

Some of the successful Malayalam movies in which Ranjini starred are-Swathi Thirunal, Chithram, directed by Priyadarshan which went on to become Box office blockbuster, Orukkam, Mukunthetta Sumitra Vikkunnu among others.

She also featured in many successful Tamil and Telugu films before she quit the industry to finish her studies. She made her comeback in the Malayalam Movie Industry after a hiatus of almost two decades with Malayalam film Koothara directed by director Srinath Rajendran which released on February 9, 2014.

5.Ranjini quit her movie career at her peak to complete her studies

In the year 1993, after acting in the movie Customs Diary, Ranjini quit movies at the peak of her career and went back to Singapore to complete her studies and went to get her degree in credit management from London.

She has since also gotten a degree in law and became a graduate lawyer. She has even practiced law while represented some of her clients in the court of law . Ranjini a.k.a Sasha Selvaraj worked with British Broadcasting Company also for a short while.

6.She is currently working as a joint director in an overseas education institution

She is currently working as a joint director in an overseas education institution in Kochi Kerala.She has been working at the institution for some few years and her work has a joint director has overseen some great improvement at the institution. 

She is also a lawyer in profession and her birth name is Sasha Selvaraj.She has represented several clients in court, and she is set to do more in her current capacity. Mist of her fans however know her as just an actress.

Sasha Selvaraj is married. Her husband’s name is Pierre Kombara who is a Malayali based businessman. They married in 2006.Sasha Selvaraj’s height is 5 feet 5 inches and her weight is 53 Kg and her age is 49 years.Her weight is 117 lbs (53 Kg) approximately. 

Ranjini was in the committee of “Nirbhaya-Kochi”, an initiative of district administration under Ernakulam District Collector, MG Rajamanickam IAS (The Welfare for Women & Children Safety) in 2014.

10.She is also an activist and has been fighting for the rights of women

She was in the founding committee of “Stree”, a project for Women and Health under Maradu municipality in 2016.She regularly appears as a panelist on TV debates for various social topics on National, Malayalam and Tamil Channels.

In 2018, she was one of 12 elite panelists invited by The National Commission for Women to a discussion on sexual harassment in the workplace.Ranjini is known for her voice against The Supreme Court verdict on women-entry at Sabarimala.She was also instrumental in stopping TV counselling shows ie. Nijangal & Solvathellam Unmai.

Her stand on matters of human rights moreso on the girl child, children and women, makes  her one of the most loved media personality and celebrity.
