Kelvin Kwan was fortunately born in wealthy family and was guaranteed an upper hand in the society. The New York-based author, who was born and raised in Singapore was moved to the US when he was 11. He was raised in Canada by his father William Kwan who was a record producer in Hon Kongho played in the band Teddy Robin and the Playboys with his brother Teddy Robin in his youth.

He began his music career back in University and was signed into a music label that natured his talent and aspirations in music. He was in high school when he realized he wanted to be a writer. 鈥淧robably 10th or 11^th grade. That鈥檚 when I started taking writing seriously and discovering that I could write.鈥�

He had pretty major setbacks in his career when he was arrested for allegedly being in possession of drugs however he had a turn around by participating in community services to nurture the young generation. He participated in different campaigns against drug usage.

Kwan`s music career began back in the year 2004 during his summer vacation after his first year in university. He was offered an audition after his father`s ex-worker heard his sing in a karaoke. He was subsequently signed to the Universal Music`s Taiwan division.

He moved to Hong Kong a year later and was taken under the wing of Tam. He was taught how to face the media and how to deal with his personal life. Tams relationship with him greatly influenced his music career. They later recorded a music video 鈥�Big Cry Baby鈥� which secured Kwan popularity in the Hong Kong Music Industry. 

At some point in Kwan`s career, Tam critiqued his public speaking ability and suggested he stick to music. Regardless of this comments Kwan greatly attributed his music success to Tam. Kwan`s album was ranked fourth most popular duet by China Central Television only five days after it was released.

2.Kwan giving back to the community

Kwan joined forces with Jill Vidal and actively took part in a number of community services aimed at preventing drug usage and shoplifting. They became spokesmen to the 鈥淪ay no to drugs鈥� campaign. The campaign was aimed at preventing the young generation from drug usage.

They later took part in the 鈥淎nti-drug promotion鈥�. These different initiatives were purposed to reducing drug abuse and usage in the young generation. This was a way of giving back to the community.

Kelvin and his girlfriend Jill were arrested on 3 March 2009over alleged possession of marijuana during investigations into shoplifting. Tam whom he attributed his music success to expressed his great disappointment on Kwan.

Kwan was released later that month and expressed his remorse and regret over the alleged possession of drugs. In his speech he hoped that the young generation would learn from his previous mistake and keep away from drugs.

He might claim that he is not rich but his childhood suggests otherwise. The movie crazy rich Asians was actually based on paternal grandmother who was fortunately the daughter of the founder of OCBC, one of the oldest banks in Singapore. It is evident that Kelvin Kwan came from a lineage of rich and prominent Asians.

As Kwan was undertaking creative writing he wrote on poem titled Singapore Bible Study, where he described one of character Eleanor where she goes to Bible study with her friends and all they do is look at jewelry and gossip. Even back in 1992, Kwan was certain that he wanted to write about the crazy world he had temporary exposure to; it was always his idea to write the Crazy Rich Asians.

8.He was wanted in Singapore for defaulting National Service

The ministry of Defence confirmed on the 22^nd of August that Kwan had defaulted his duties in the service. He had overtime failed to register in the service despite several letters that were requesting him to do so. Kevin Kwan鈥檚 1994 application to renounce his Singaporean citizenship   and subsequent appeal were both rejected. 

His default made him a wanted man in Singapore.If convicted Kwan is liable for fine no exceeding $10,000 and/or a prison sentence of up to 3 years, under the Enlistment Act.
